École St.Eustache Principal/Directeur: Marcel Houde St.Eustache, MB Phone#:204-353-2869 Box182 -Allarie St. S. Dear ESE families, October has flown by! With the many things that are going on, that really should come as no surprise. October has been a full month of fun, friendship, family and learning. Students have had the opportunity to: sing together at choral workshop, laugh together during the puppet shows, enjoy a great French movie together at Cinémental, share together the joy of their stuffies and dance together at our annual Hallowe’en dance. Woven throughout the month have been tremendous learning opportunities for students in each and every class. Finally, this month provided us with two long weekends where students were able to spend valuable time with family and friends. What a great month! As we look forward to another fun Hallowe’en evening, I would like to remind students to enjoy every minute of your trick and or treat outings but to also ensure that you remain safe. Be sure that you have reflective material on the front and back of your costumes, look both ways before you excitedly cross the street and try not to overdo it with the treats! Thank you to Manitoba Public Insurance who has provided our children with reflective Hallowe’en bags. This year’s first student-led conferences will be held on Thursday, November 24 th from 5:00 – 8:00 pm and on Friday, November 25 th from 9:00 – 3:00. Mme Ginette will be sending home an email with conference sign-up information. Prior to the conferences, report cards will be sent home. Please take the time to go through the report card with your child. Inquire as to where and how they believe that they are excelling. Discuss areas where they might like to improve or increase their focus. Rich and productive conversations with your children most often lead to rich and productive conferences between student, teacher and parents and thoughtful reflection afterwards. Looking forward to a great November! M. From the Classroom

Mme St Cyr’s Class

This month, the grade 2 class has been going batty! The students have been

learning about bats through a variety of activities which include: playing

games, exploring websites, viewing videos as well as reading and writing

about these creatures of the night. In Social Studies, the class has been

working on a unit about Citizenship. The students illustrated and wrote

about the many ways of being responsible at home, at school and in the

community. This information was compiled into a classroom book entitled, Je

suis responsable. In Science, the class has been working on describing,

comparing and classifying animals according to various characteristics and

behaviors. The students have also participated in a variety of writing,

reading, mathematical and art Halloween themed activities. A highlight this

month was transplanting an apple tree in the schoolyard.

Mme Orchard’s Class

We are a class that absolutely loves animals. With some animal

experts in the class along with our class research, we have been able

to ask a lot of interesting questions about a variety of animals –

including insects. A few of us have brought in spiders, caterpillars,

lady bugs, and crickets for the class to observe. We have noticed

that one of the spider jars has an egg sack. We learned that the eggs

won’t hatch until spring so we’re excited to see if that works out.

We also sang a lot of songs related to Halloween and played some

fun games to practice our French vocabulary. Our writing skills have

been improving and some of us are starting to or getting back into

writing stories. We’re excited to share some of the stories we’re

working on. In math, we’re working on different skills depending on

our level but we’re all working on counting to 100 or 200 in French.

We have also gotten into skip counting and estimating which has

been fun. We have been exploring and improving on our strengths

this month as well. So far we have been building, painting, writing,

creating with different materials, and testing the movement of

materials. It has been a great month and we’re excited to see what

November brings!

Mme Lavallée’s Class

The second month of school has definitely been a productive one for the 4/5

class. We continued to study the weather in Science by learning about the water

cycle and designing and building our own rain gauges out of bottles. In math, we

reviewed and expanded our knowledge of addition and subtraction with

regrouping. In ELA, we finished up our novel study of James & the Giant Peach.

Finally, following a tradition in Mme Lavallée’s class, we received our first pen pal

letters along with a collaborative art piece, from Mr. Matas’ grade 5 class at

Laidlaw School in Winnipeg.

Mme Arsenault’s class Bonjour Parents! Can you believe October is over already? Time flies when you are learning so much and having fun doing it! This month, we have been learning how to add to 10 and we have been practicing subitizing (recognizing groups of numbers without counting). We have also been learning about the seasons and practicing French vocabulary associated with the seasons. We started our French centres at the beginning of the month. The focus in our French centres is on vocabulary. This month's vocabulary is Halloween focused. We have also been learning songs that use our Halloween vocabulary. Next month we will be talking about Remembrance Day. We will continue to talk about the seasons and we will start simple coding!

Mme Richards Class

This month, we continue to get used to school rules and routines. The big topic this month was

‘friendship’. Students are learning to be friends to one another and to be a positive influence in the

classroom. A common question you will hear is, “Are you helping or are you hurting?” We have

studied letters ‘Aa’, ‘Bb’, and ‘Cc’ as beginning sounds and have learned the signs for each. We are

counting up to 30 and back from 15: all in French!! The Kinders have now had 2 visits to the

library and are really enjoying choosing, and reading, their books. We planted our tree in the

playground. They each added some soil and some mulch. We will be watching this tree as it grows.

Happy Hallowe’en to all!

M. Aaron & Mme Lacroix’s Class

We’ve had a spooktacular month in the grade 3 class. In French class students

have been busy writing French stories for Halloween. In math we’ve been working

on our mental math skills as well as measurement. We’ve measured distances

between different Canadian cities and started measuring different shapes for

perimeter and area. We’ve continued to build this month, building structures

out of marshmallows, toothpicks, and spaghetti. Students have been working hard

editing and coming up with creative ideas to write superhero stories. We will soon

be typing up these stories and will be ready to publish our first written work of the

year. We are looking forward to having another great month in November.

M Carrière’s Class Wow! What a busy month we have had in October. We are all bonding and getting to know each other quite well and things are moving positively in the right direction. This month we have attempted to try a variety of activities, some of which the students had never tried before or really even heard of. I think they were really surprised to see how difficult it is to actually dig a hole! Some of the things we attempted this month are multiple science experiments, reading an entire novel, planting trees, exploring various ways to calculate measurements, hosting guest speakers and of course having an NHL draft amongst our classmates. I think the girls are surprising some of the boys with their knowledge of hockey! We sure are busy here and there is much more to come in November. Stay tuned for further updates and to see what we have been doing next...

From the gym

October has been a busy month in the gym, our grade 4, 5,

and 6’s have started volleyball intramurals and working on our

skills in class. Our younger students have been working on

our basic movement skills such as jumping, skipping, and

galloping in a variety of games. We look forward next month

to having a mini volleyball tournament for the 5’s and 6’s with

St. Francois.

We have an exciting new initiative this year at École St. Eustache called Student Voice. This group will consist of 2 students from each class and the composition of the group will change each month. This group will be the voice of the students and will be responsible for bringing concerns and ideas forward from their classrooms. Students will meet two to three times per month. They will be responsible for discussing possible changes in our school and will organize our spirit days each month. They will also have the important responsibility of reporting their discussions back to their class. This is a great leadership opportunity and each child will have the option to participate in the group at some point during the year. Please take the time to discuss with your children what Student Voice is and what it can mean to them. We look forward to meeting with the students this year.
