“The idea for Trail Towns probably

started for me back in 1990 on my

fi rst mountain bike holiday at Falls

Creek, when mountain bike riding was

‘invented,’”he said.

“Heaps of riding holidays over the

decades since meant lots of experi-

ences with friends and now my wife

and kids and it bugged me that there

wasn’t one place to fi nd out where to

ride, stay, eat and play.

“I was introduced to Vandy (van der

Ploeg) four years ago and we imme-

diately hit it off and decided to make

a TV show about bike holidays right

then and there.”

The friendship blossomed from

there, and the two refi ned the idea

for almost three years before fi lming

their six episode fi rst season between

October and February, showcasing

Australia’s backcountry beauty from

southern Western Australia all the way

to Canberra.

Their North Eastern expedition will

be the fourth episode in the series,

and the hosts said that fi lming in the

area was the “absolute highlight” of

the experience, visiting famous win-

eries and sampling great food, while

investigating the unique riding oppor-

tunities the region has to off er.

“I thought Wangaratta was super

cool, it’s exactly what a trail town

should be.

“A wide and excellent variety of

places to eat and stay, heaps of rid-

ing from gravel to rail trail, an awe-

some pump track and some of the

best mountain biking anywhere on its

doorstep,” Mr Kahsnitz said.

“It’s a gem and looks to be getting

better all the time.”

But Mr Kahsnitz said that Myrtleford

was the surprise packet of their ad-

venture, labelling the alpine town as

“the perfect hub for mountain biking

in the region.”

“It’s like it’s fi nally come of age,

the main streetscape is just stunning

with improvements, the mosaic trail

is enchanting, and the cafes and res-

taurants are seriously world class,” he

said.

“I used to just drive through Myrtl-

eford, now I always stop.”

With season two already locked

in, Mr Kahsnitz said he hoped Trail

Towns would help to feed viewers’

desire to get out and enjoy what we

have in regional Victoria.

“There are so many things to do,

regardless of what you are into.

“I think the best thing for anyone

from Wangaratta and the region to

do so they never take what they

have for granted is to go for a drive

through any big city in peak hour,”

he said.

“You’ll never take this magical

place for granted again!”

Trail Towns’ High Country feature

premieres on SBS at 4pm on Satur-

day, June 26.
