Brookhill School Notices Although this is the start of a new term, Year 12 students are rapidly approaching the end of their time at Aitken. The group that will soon depart have been a pleasure to work with and will be missed. However, time marches on and it will be the legacy of leadership and scholarship that the group leaves behind which will live on in the Aitken College culture. I have written to parents of Year 12 students separately, advising of arrangements for the annual Year 12 Celebration Day on Tuesday 18 October and invited them to the final assembly and parade. Expectations: At the first assembly this term, I reminded all Brookhill students of some of the core expectations for student members of our community. I also mentioned a couple of specific things that need to be well understood. To facilitate discussion at home between parents and children, I will briefly list some of the points I spoke to the students about. Senior students are leaders within the College Community. This means they must strive for high standards of behaviour, dress and grooming, punctuality and respect for each other and the community. All students must show respect for staff. This means: Classes must be allowed to run in an orderly fashion; students must not behave in a way that disrupts classes They must not argue with teachers They must follow all teacher instructions promptly They must accept the consequences of being disrespectful to staff. All students must be properly attired in school uniform: PE Uniform is not an acceptable substitute for correct uniform Senior Students must take responsibility for having sufficient uniform items (they are old enough to use the washing

machine). Notes saying that uniform items are dirty will not be accepted Uniform must be worn properly Hair that is below shoulder length must be tied back. Piercings: Students are permitted to have one stud or sleeper in each ear lobe. No other piercings are permitted. Students with other visible piercings may be removed from class and sent home and will not be allowed to return to school with the piercing visible.

VCAL News All students undertaking the VCAL program at Aitken College participate in Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) at the end of Term 2 and Term 3. The aim of SWL is for students to get a practical experience of their chosen career field. This is also viewed as a way for students to experience ‘job hunting’ and develop appropriate skills.

Please note that students should not be using their mobile phone during school hours. Every student has been provided with a locker and lock and phones should be stored in their locker every morning. Students found using phones during school hours will have them confiscated for the day. Please do not call or text your child during school hours. In an emergency, please call reception and they will pass the message on immediately. Homework club will be running again this term. Students can attend every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes to catch up with work. In addition to a staff member, Youth Leaders from Lifehouse church are in attendance to assist students. This term we invite applicants for 2017 leadership positions. If you feel your child displays leadership skills, please encourage them to nominate themselves. Once all nominations are in, applicants will sit an interview with either myself and/or the Assistant Heads of Dunhelen. While this might seem a little early, the time will be here before we know it, so I would like to remind parents and students that Wednesday 7 December is Presentation night. This is a compulsory event for Dunhelen students so please make a note in your diary now, if you haven’t already done so. A welcome back from leave to Mr Michael Patchell, I am sure he is feeling ready to start again. As you may be aware, Mr Ben Prentice is on leave this term. Year 7 parents should feel free to contact Mrs Caron Flynn – Acting Assistant Head of School (Year 7).

Fairview School Notices Welcome back to Term 4! It is a very busy time of the year, so please keep up to date with all events and due dates. We begin Term 4 in the Summer school uniform. Please ensure that the uniform is worn correctly and parents can always refer to the Preparatory School Communication Book for further information. This week we have focused on wellbeing and I spoke at assembly about the many ways we can look after ourselves and each other. The three key points for the students relate to eating well, getting sufficient exercise and making sure they get enough sleep. Students in the Preparatory School should be aiming for at least 10 hours per night. On Wednesday, the Physical Education Department and some of our secondary students ran some physical activities for the Fairview students which helped keep them active. As part of the activities, many family members joined the students on the front lawn for a teddy bears picnic and on Thursday, grandparents and other family members were welcomed into the classroom to help with activities.

Although the term has only just begun, with the advent of Daylight Savings, we have noticed an increase in students running late for school. Homeroom commences at 8.45am and students should be waiting at their classroom at this time. If students are running late, they must go to Reception and collect a late pass. Please do not drop students off prior to 8.00am. International School Library Celebration: Next Wednesday 12 October, the Preparatory School will celebrate International School Library Month. A note went home earlier this week outlining the plans for a Book Character Parade from 9.15am in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre. Parents are welcome to attend and we welcome younger siblings and parents who would also like to dress up. If your child does not wear a Book Character costume, they must wear their school uniform. This is not a casual dress day. Term 4 Assembly Schedule Chapel (9.00am) and Assembly (9.30am):

Chaplain’s Corner How Quickly Time Flies: Here we are, Term 4 again! In less than two weeks we will be saying farewell to our Year 12 students, which seems to herald the run down to Christmas. Zoom Zoom!! The hint of summer is starting to show her colours and the warm air is on its way. It certainly changes my mood out there on yard duty when I am not being hit by the chilly winds, but instead can soak up the warmth of the sun. Just like the speed of each year and the changing seasons, our lives can so quickly go from misery to joy, luring us into warmth. However, there will be hot days ahead where we will wish for the cool of winter, and those bitter cold days where we long for the heat. Why can’t we just have spring all year round, or days between 22 and 27 degrees every day? Why, because life is not like that; we will all have our seasons to journey through. For me, knowing that God is with me on the journey, enables me to never journey alone, but also, the life of Jesus reminds me that on the other side of the tough times in life, there is new life! I talked to the secondary students in chapel this week about a cup half full versus a cup half empty; do we enjoy the half we have, or grieve over the half we do not have. I think the enjoyment of what we have comes out of knowing that God loves, accepts and forgives us, which then enables us to offer ourselves self-love. It is my perception that we enjoy the half that we have, when we can enjoy the reflection of God in our own lives. May you enjoy your cup, no matter how full or empty it is. Humanities News

Welcome to the final term for 2016! The Humanities Faculty wishes all our Year 12 VCE students (in Business Management, Sociology, Legal Studies, Accounting and History) the best of luck in preparing for their upcoming exams. We are sure that they will be rewarded for the great efforts they have put in over the past two years. We are holding the second annual ‘Aitken Map Competition’ this month. Students complete a hand-drawn map of A4 size or bigger, conforming to the “BOLTSS” geographic conventions (border, orientation, legend, title, scale and source) and submit it to their teacher or myself by Wednesday 2 November to win prizes: $40 iTunes for first place and $20 each for 2nd - 5th place. It is a great way to develop students’ mapping skills in a fun way!

Mr Ben Lawless Head of Humanities

Performing Arts News Wellbeing Week Performances: Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 Music classes entertained staff and students at lunchtime concerts this week. College Play: Students are undertaking the final rehearsals for this year’s College Play. Based on the children’s book of the same name, The Book Of Everything revolves around a young boy Thomas who escapes into a fantasy world to avoid a difficult relationship with his well-meaning but sometime mean father. It is a humorous tale which sets out to prove the strength in families banding together to create happiness in their lives. Although there are some mature themes, the play has been enjoyed by people of all ages. There are three performances, Thursday 13 October, Friday 14 October and Saturday 15 October all commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets are $16.50 adults or $11 for children/concessions (plus booking fees). There is also a Family of Four ticket price of $48.80 offering four tickets of any type. Tickets are available now by going to https://www.trybooking.com/LGBE.

Twilight Concert: One of the biggest concerts for the year is the Twilight Concert which runs in conjunction with College Open Evening on Tuesday 25 October. It involves students from all year levels in a three-hour outdoor show which takes place on the lawn area outside reception. The P&F Association will be selling BBQ food, our usual coffee van and ice-cream vendor will also be on site for you to purchase, or bring a blanket and packed picnic of your own and enjoy the varied and free program of music. Director’s Choice Gala Concert: Each year, we are excited to present some of the best work seen in the College across the year in the annual showcase of Aitken talent. More than one hundred students from Year 3 to 12 have been specially invited to re-stage some of the items I have chosen as the best this year. If you haven’t attended many of the concerts throughout the year, this is a great way to see the talent we have. We will also present a sneak peek of next year’s College Musical. The performance will commence at 7.30pm on Thursday 27 October in the Chapel and Performing Arts Centre. Tickets go on sale this Monday and are a flat $10 each including booking fee. Alternatively, get a group together and get four tickets for the price of three, just $30. Go to https://www.trybooking.com/MICE to get your tickets to this wonderful show.

FUNDRAISER 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians Many families in the Aitken College community manage or own a business. Each year as a fundraiser the Parents & Friends Association compile a Community Business Directory to provide a way in which we can support local business. If you are a new family to our community, please consider advertising your business in this worthwhile and well used Business Directory.

The 2016 Business Directory will be advertised on the College website and in the newsletter until the end of February 2017. Aitken families may purchase a space for $50.00 to promote and advertise their business. All money raised from this most valued fundraiser will be used by the Parents & Friends Association to improve the environment, facilities and equipment of the College, to benefit our children. Please support this fundraiser by completing the section below and return to the Accounts office with your payment. An early booking is most favourable for your business. We welcome you to browse the Business Directory 2016 on the College website: http://www.aitkencollege.edu.au/aitken-community/aitken-college-business-directory/
