What is this Bitcoin thing and should I invest?

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency using a distributed blockchain technology. What?!? To rephrase, Bitcoin is electronic cash kept in an electronic wallet. Is it secure? Probably. Currently there is $20 billion betting that it is secure and unhackable. Is it secret? Yes and no. All electronic wallets and their trans-actions are in public ledgers in many different places on the internet. That is one of the mechanisms that secures the system. But ownership of the wallet can be shrouded in mystery. Is it profitable? For

those who got in early, the answer is an undeniable ‘YES’. Seven years ago on May 22, 2010, Bitcoin Pizza Day was born; Hanyecz exchanged 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas. Today, that same 10,000 bitcoin is worth over $20 million dollars. Pretty good return on $20 bucks worth of pizza. Is it mainstream? Kinda. Bitcoin is definitely gaining traction. Some well-known companies are accepting bitcoin – Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Tesla, and other retailers. Japan just passed a law allowing the accepting of bitcoin as legal tender and Russia is declaring it “not illegal”; Hey, it’s a start. Should I purchase bitcoin as an investment? It depends. It has been a great start to being your new CEO. I have met many great members and have enjoyed immensely working with the finest staff any credit union could have.

We have great front-line tellers. Suzie, Lily, Rocio, Jenna and Rosie are always happy and ready to serve you, our members.

I cannot forget our beloved post office branch run by Belinda and Caren. They tirelessly serve our postal membership with love and dedication. They embody our credit union mission of caring and serving.

Need to open up an account or add an additional service? Our great team of MSRs are ready and able to assist. Jan, Sandra, Chris and Ria deliver tremendous member service and make sure all of your financial needs are being met.

Where would we be without our dedicated lending staff. For your auto lending, unsecured, consumer lending and debt consolidation, you will find no cheerier people to walk you through the process than our dynamic duo of Monica and Danielle. For all things Visa, Tammy is simply wonderful and ready to resolve all of your card problems. If you need any help with a real estate loan, Yumiko is here to assist.

The magic that keeps all the important things happening in the background is done by our excellent back office team of Shawna, Carla and Tani. These three musketeers keep everything in balance and up to date.

And if you are one of our special members you will get to know Norma, and Norma will get to know you. She is one of the nicest collectors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Of course, she is still a collector and does a fine job, but she is one of the nice ones.

I could not do this alone. I have an outstanding management team that assists me and keeps everything humming. Christine is the CFO and takes care of the financials and Information Technology area. Beverly makes sure all of our members are served well by front line staff. Hilda focuses on serving the employee so they can do their best as well as keeping our credit union compliant. These three amigos have done a world-class job at making your credit union the finest in the state.

I can’t forget our two credit union partners. Sheila with DriveWise is your go-to person if you are in-terested in hassle free car shopping. While some of us may enjoy spending all day at a car dealership negotiating with the salespeople, I have better things to do with my time. For those who are ready to prepare for retirement, Glendale Area Wealth Management’s own Dominick stands ready to assist.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

There are many versions of a fake check scam. However, the result is the same. Scammers lure consumers into depositing a cashier’s check, money order, or other checking instrument from someone that they don’t know and wiring or sending money to the scammers. A check may take considerably longer to clear the financial institution that issued it before the funds can be collected. It could take days or even weeks to discover that the deposited check was fraudulent.

When the check is discovered to be fraudulent, the damage may already have been done. Once a victim wires or sends funds from such a check, he or she may be responsible for reimbursing the financial institution for that amount. Typically, the financial institution will not cover the financial loss and expects the victim to pay the difference.

The Federal Trade Commission also recently issued a fake check scam alert. These checks can be hard to recognize. They may be printed with the names, addresses, and logos of legitimate financial institutions. Consumers are reminded to be on the alert and to not be pressured into wiring funds or sending money after depositing a check.

If you think you or someone you know was the victim of a fake check scam, consider taking the following steps:

• Contact your local law enforcement agency to report the scam. • Contact your state’s attorney general. Contact information for each state’s attorney general can be found on the National Association of Attorneys General website. • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Your complaint will be filed into a secure online database, which is used by many local, state, federal, and international law enforcement agencies. Complaints from consumers help detect patterns of fraud and abuse. • If you or the victim is an older adult or a person with a disability, contact your local adult protective services agency. You can find local support resources using the online Eldercare Locator or by calling 1-800-677-1116.
