Please join us for the whole school Winter festival this Friday. In anticipation of the Winter festival, Kindergarten and Primary classes finish at 12:30pm ready for parent pick up. Primary children return at 4:30pm to their classrooms and will attend an assembly in the LAC before the Lantern Walk scheduled for 5:45pm. The good news is we are seeking to keep the blue gum tree outside the playgroup by reducing the weight of higher branches by lopping them off. Whilst this will reduce the size of the tree, we hope it will remain intake at its base. In this way it reduces the risk of the tree splitting in two. We will seek, once the wood is dry and seasoned, to reuse it for making a variety of climbing frames, garden benches and other things. This work will be undertaken by a qualified arborist in the July school holidays. The building project is humming along and major services will be installed in the July holidays. Hopefully, weather permitting, we will have the foundations laid by the time we all return in Term 3. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding with the noise created by the process of preparing the ground for the next stage of work. Helen Platell, JD | Principal

Possible Futures 2024

What future do we want to create for ourschool into 2024 and what will that future

look like when realised?

The big question is:

It feels that Winter has well and truly arrived. Our fire is being lit more and more often to help us keep warm while at kindergarten. In the last couple of weeks we have experienced rain, hail, wind, the misty air, crisp mornings and a little sun here and there. The children are preparing for our Winter Festival by carefully painting for their lantern and working with a friend to make their twisty tie handle. We are hearing stories about Father Sun sharing a spark of his last autumn rays candles makers making candles so that all the houses in the village have light through the dark and cold winter. As a reminder our festival is on Friday the 22nd of June. All children are invited to attend even if it is not a usual Kindy day and all children go home at 12:30pm. We then return on the 23rd of June (5pm-6:30pm) for our lantern walk and shared meal. Please see our notice board to nominate your contribution of hot soup or bread. If you are able to help with set up on Thursday 21st from 1:30pm - 3:20pm please let me know.Dates and times are now up for child discussions for the older children. Please add your name to a time that suits

and please speak with me if these times are not suitable so that we can make another arrangement.During the last week of term we will have a dolly week rather than just one day. Children are invited to bring their doll to kindergarten throughout the week. With it being so wet now we thought we would enjoy our dolls during inside play and leaving them warm and cosy inside while we venture outside into the elements.I look forward to seeing you at our Winter Festival.

Class 1 Main Lesson is the story of the Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen. Each day the children hear a part of the story, draw it and are writing their first sentences.

Class 2To celebrate the Winter Solstice, Class 2 incorporated both the winter lanterns with their first building project constructed from clay bricks and driftwood. These lanterns are a building block for their individual house project and the fourteen top box beehives that we are building.Emily | Class Teacher

Sailing

Junior Sailors Rule the Water

Congratulations to our students who participated in the State Optimist Sailing Championships (Zoe Robinson, Class 7 and Hamish Robinson, Class 5) and also to (Viv Zufferey Class 7) who participated in the Frostbite Regatta over the long weekend. An excerpt from article: “Goolwa Aquatic Club’s young sailors were represented well across all four divisions, a credit to the kids and the training program at the Goolwa Aquatic Club. In Orange Fleet (no regatta experience), Vivienne Zufferey sailed consistently well to take second place.Hamish Robinson placed seventh, after taking line honours in a thriller in the final race. Zoe Robinson, in her second Frostbite, but first State Titles, was not far behind in fifth place, with two second places and two thirds in individual races. “ https://www.victorharbortimes.com.au/story/5460999/gac-junior-sailors-rule-the-water/?cs=1663#slide=1

Bike for Charity

Matias | Class 6

I am going to repair bikes with the help of others and donate them to various charities. The charities are Bicycles for Humanity and Bikes for Refugees. These charities are a group of volunteers that give the bikes to people that need them or refugees. We have already had one bike donated to us so we can repair it and give it to a charity. We also need donations or bike parts to make the project successful. Any help you could give would be very appreciated.Thank you for supporting the programme in our school.

SoccerClass 6 and 7 boys played against St Michaels Lutheran School in Hahndorf.Thank you to Jhy for being our referee on the day.Congratulations to Peter, Flynn, Cody and Teale on scoring awesome goals. Peter’s goal was scored on his 13th birthday and he also made the SAPSASA team. Well done!Final score 4 – 1. Nic | Team manager

In June, students from Classes 10 and 11 participated in an outdoor adventure along the Heysen Trail.Students hiked from Waitpinga Beach to Myponga Reservoir – completing our second section is as many years. Students were challenged to be self organising and managing and worked together to navigate and travel over diverse coastal terrain.Students developed skills in group management,

leadership, negotiation, working with others and living in a community. At night they prepared their meals from fresh fruit and vegetables and basic staples creating culinary delights using liquid fuel stoves. The second year ODE students became mentors for newer students and supported them throughout the adventure.
