The Art of Ka Lima O Maui… At its simplest, an artist is someone who makes art. Many people cannot draw much more than stick figures so we all appreciate those who can see more, imagine more and inspire more. There are several “artists” at Ka Lima who have amazed the rest of us here for a long time. Eben is one of them and he loves vehicles of all kinds and loves to draw them. He has been known to draw detailed pictures of trucks using the rear view mirror to view them as he is driven around. Presently, he has also developed a unique technique he calls “puzzle papering” where he takes an image and blows it up again and again until it blurs and then he reconstructs it using var-ious tools - pen, pencil, white out, colored paper, etc. to make a new and unique design. He started drawing in 1980 and has been drawing every day since.

Tyrone has a unique way at looking at his art. His images are full of color and joy. He has even developed a line of note cards from his art work which are available at our office by calling 244-5502

Word from the Executive Director: Dreams do come true!!! Ka Lima O Maui’s Capital Project is in full swing and gaining momentum fast. Our Capital Campaign Committee is very busy hosting small gatherings to share Ka Lima’s dream with the community. The new facility will allow us to grow our services and to consolidate all of our operations on the 2 acre site we lease from the County of Maui. Close to $1.8 million has been raised so far including a $500,000 grant from the County of Maui and $250,000 from the State of Hawaii Legislature Grant in Aid process. Over a dozen Foundations are being solicited for their support. Look for updates on our progress towards raising $4.5 million in our future newsletters!!!

The Workers Hui at Ka Lima O Maui planned, set up and pulled off a great dance party. Highlights included dancing under a Disco Ball, ono food, ice cream sundae and plenty of time to socialize outside of work/program. The event was so well received that one Hui member was determined to set the next meeting date before leaving the dance. Mahalo nui loa to Brandon, Crystal, and all the members of the Hui Club of Ka Lima O Maui for a job well done!!!

Next up for the busy Hui Club is a Burger Fund Raiser April 5.

The next event will be “Movie Night” April 12....

MAKING Good Use of Grants

Recently we were fortunate to submit successful grant requests for two work vans and a riding mower. The two vans both came from the US Department of Transportation under ADA Section 5310 that partners with the State of Hawaii Depart-ment of Transportation for the administration and management. One van is assigned to Mark’s crew in charge of the TSA contract at the Kahului Airport. The other van is assigned to Freddy’s crew who main-tain the Maui Police Station in Wailuku and central Maui parks. The US Department of Transportation funding has purchased other vehicles in the past for Ka Lima O Maui and we appreciate all their support in help-ing Ka Lima O Maui to “Enhance Lives Through Self Reliance.

The new riding lawn mower is assigned to Geo’s crew who work in both Central Maui & Kihei parks. This piece of equipment was made possible through a grant from The Wilcox Foundation. Like the vehicles, having good equipment allows the workers of Ka Lima O Maui to meet their contracts, using professional equipment and allowing quality training for our workers. Mahalo to The Wilcox Foundation for providing us with the new John Deere riding mower.

The Art of Ka Lima O Maui…

Fae uses her art to celebrate happy things – rainbows, dolphins, horses & sunsets. She is a regular artist for Special Olympics with her creative banners.

Keven loves drawing characters and has been drawing for five years. His illustrations offer fi-ne details of characters ranging from Mickey Mouse to Mega Burst.

Once again, Ka Lima O Maui had the privilege of being a beneficiary of The Sentry Tournament of Champions that took place on January 2nd to January 6th, 2019 in Kapalua. Our volunteers assisted with parking lot duties and the pro-motion of the event. Nancy Cross, the Executive Director of the tournament continues to do a fabulous job organizing a world class event and making it look easy. Equally in-spiring is Sentry’s commitment to Maui’s community. I was impressed that Stephanie and Ann from Sentry and Sentry Foundation respectively took the time to personally visit our programs to get a good understanding of our mis-sion. Thank you to all of our volunteers and we look for-ward to next year.

Christopher “Kili” Hinau is a new worker assigned to Kamaile's crew. He lives in Wailuku and loves to ride dirt bike. He went to Lahainaluna, King K and Maui High Schools and remembers being at Lahainaluna was "one of the best things in my life". Wel-come Kili—you will do great!!!

Ben Hokoana is originally from Hana and now lives in Wailuku. He has been married 16 years and is a big sports fan, especially of the Dallas Cowboys football team. He is a float-ing supervisor and he fills in when another supervisor is sick or on vacation. Ben has already shown a flexible and helpful attitude that is typical of all Ka Lima O Maui Supervisors. Welcome aboard Ben!!!

Ian Carrero completed an Internship at Kihei Ace Hardware . Ian enjoyed his time there and learned a lot not only about working but about his per-sonal strengths and abilities. We offer a shout out to the Manager, Ma-nasseh, the Assistant Manager, Ruby and the entire team for helping Ian.

Linda, one of the Direct Support Work-ers in our Waiver Program, is retiring from Ka Lima O Maui. She plans to re-locate to Texas with her daughter and she will be missed. Safety Training

Safety is not something that we take for granted at Ka Lima O Maui. We have regular safety training classes for our workers. It pays off since we have currently gone over 250 days without an accident. Among our recent training sessions were: Driving safety and awareness Proper lifting and bending Violence and aggression in the work place and how to handle it

safely. We take pride in training our workers on how to do a job correctly

Fae Torres was voted in as Vice President and Eva Ujano was voted in as Secretary of the Self Advoca-cy Advisory Council (SACC), a statewide nonprofit that that strives to empower individuals and improve services for people with developmental disabilities. As the Vice President, Fae’s duties are to help the Secretary to prepare for meetings and to help lead the meetings. Eva is responsible for writing the minutes for the meetings and to take roll at the meetings.

Awesome job Fae and Eva for taking on leadership roles with the SAAC. We are very proud of you both! Welcome to Ka Lima O Maui Waiver Program

Branden Furetes comes to us from Maui High School. Brandon is a very happy and cheerful guy. He enjoys lis-tening and humming to music.

Khalia is from Atlanta Georgia and she loves horses, dogs, & cats. She also enjoys all types of music and wrestling too. She is a very happy gal and enjoys being here and making new friends.

Lucy is a new Direct Service Worker who comes to us with many years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Lucy enjoys spend-ing time with her family and going to church. She is excited to work with our participants as she has a passion for helping and working with people.

13th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament—A Big Success!!!

The 13th Annual Fundraiser Golf Tournament took place on Feb-ruary 23 at the Dunes at Maui Lani. There were 98 golfers who participated along with over 45 Sponsors and more than 70 do-nors. These businesses and individuals made the event an enor-mous success and we raised the most money yet from our golf tournament. The Good Work done at Ka Lima O Maui cannot happen without community support and this event was another reminder of all the aloha in our community for Ka Lima O Maui. MAHALO NUI LOA to our major sponsors, Committee Chair Alexa Higashi, and to everyone who helped to make it possible!!!

big number, he keeps all of us feeling young. Fae was busy making a travel bag for her August

Las Vegas trip.

Waiver Center Community Activities

John D, Fae Torres, Eva Ujano, and Larry Haramoto attended the Day at the Capitol in March. They represented Maui and toured the capitol, got to meet legislators, such as Senator Roz Baker above. “We had a great time! It was so much fun. The best part was meeting the governor and spending time with him.” We talked about getting a bowling alley on Maui” - Fae Tores

Recently, the staff and workers of Ka Lima O Maui were in the mid-dle of a Training Session when one of the workers suffered a seizure. Moving right in and knowing exactly what to do in that situation were a couple of Ka Lima O Maui supervisors. This incident de-scribes perfectly why it is often misunderstood exactly all that Ka Lima O Maui supervisors do. Of course, they are responsible to com-plete their work and to fulfill our custodial and grounds maintenance contracts but they do so much more! It is not unusual for them to provide assistance to workers who experience temporary homeless-ness, transportation needs, medication imbalance, behavioral or domestic issues. Ka Lima O Maui supervisors are a breed apart! These are just some of the issues which they handle in addition to providing comprehensive skill training to workers who may be on their first job or have little or no work experience. The supervisors of our custodial and grounds crews, led by Director of Operations Dan Honma, are the backbone of the good work that takes place quietly each day at Ka Lima O Maui.

Another Vocational Work Adjustment Training (VWATS) class is in full swing at Ka Lima O Maui. The four students will con-tinue to undergo training followed by a 6-week paid internship (Ka Lima pays wages and insurance) which hopefully will lead to permanent employment. The classes are very comprehensive and include: soft skill development such as effective communication and

learning appropriate work behavior, practicing and learning to write a resume, a cover letter and

doing a job search

practicing and critiquing mock job interviews

learning team building skills

doing assessments and building more new skills

At the end of the class, the Training Staff (Kim and Nancy who do Job Placement and Training for Ka Lima O Maui) will help find each student a six-week paid internship.
