Hi Everyone,
Welcome to our last newsletter for term one, 2019! We have certainly had
a busy first term with major milestones achieved in our curriculum and
extra-curricular areas. I have enjoyed my first term at Agnes Water State
School and look forward to many more in the future. Thank you to all our
parents, carers, families, friends, volunteers and local community members
for your support towards our school this term. A school definitely requires
everyone working together to achieve our goals. Don’t forget to look to the
left to see our upcoming important dates. These dates go well in to term
two, and I am sure there will be more added as term one concludes and
term two begins. We have some great messages below, so please read on.
Years 1-3 Swimming Carnival Highlights
Our very first years 1-3 swimming carnival was wet, both in and out of the
pool due to rain, but that did not dampen the spirits of our students,
parents, teachers and community members! This event was a great
culmination and celebration of all the hard work throughout the six weeks
of swimming lessons. Every student tried their very best and were very
proud no matter what place they came. Thank you to Mr Lane, Ms Terri,
Ms Karen, lower school teachers and parents for your efforts in making
swimming a great experience for our years 1-3 students. Also, well done
to our year six House Captains who had the job of handing out ribbons –
they did a wonderful job!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL… CONTINUED
Alternate Sports Review & Highlights
During term one, years 4-6 students have had the opportunity to be a part of a wide variety of sports. They
have had the choice of stand-up paddle boarding (which I attended three times, and there are pictures below
to prove it), golf (which I attended once), tennis (which I attended once), surfing, gymnastics or yoga. Thank
you to all the staff, parents/carers and local organisations for making these sport afternoons a wonderful
experience for our years 4-6 students. We look forward to these activities again in term four. Here are
some of the pictures captured during stand-up paddle boarding below.
Mathematics Academic Triathlon
A wonderful morning was had at our first academic triathlon for 2019 on Monday April 1. Schools from across
this great area (DCC, Miriam Vale, Rosedale & Lowmead) came to compete in a range of mathematics
challenges. The students really worked hard and persistently in their teams to answer some quite tricky
questions. All team members needed to use their strengths to gain points for their team. There were three
categories (Junior Primary, Senior Primary and Secondary). The winners for each area of the day were
Lowmead (Junior Primary); Agnes Water State School (Senior Primary) & Discovery Christian College
(Secondary). Aggregate champions (points averaged with school enrolments) were Agnes Water State School
(Primary) and Miriam Vale State School (Secondary). A huge congratulations to all winners. To all who
participated, well done on participating in a very academically rigorous activity – really great to see students
challenging themselves! Please find below pictures captured from the day.

Easter Bonnet Parade
P-3 students along with the Kindy Kids (from Agnes Water Daycare) and their parents/carers had a
wonderful morning at the Easter Bonnet Parade. They had story time with Mr Loughland, a march around the
hall wearing their Easter bonnets led by the Easter Bunny and an Easter Egg Hunt. The Kindy kids came down
to Agnes Water State School as part of their first transition to school day. Please find some photos below.
ANZAC Day Ceremonies in Term 2
School ANZAC Ceremony Wednesday April 24
Our school’s ANZAC ceremony will be on Wednesday April 24, from 9am-9:45am, at the front of the school
near our flag poles. Our School Captains and some of our Student Leaders will be running the ceremony. All
leaders running the ceremony will receive their speeches in week ten of term one to practice their lines over
the holidays. All parents, carers, friends, family and community members are welcome to join us.
ANZAC Day Ceremonies – Thursday April 25 (Public Holiday)
Agnes Water State School will be participating in both ANZAC Day ceremonies on Thursday, April 25. The
day will begin with a 6am Dawn Service at the memorial display outside the SPAR shopping complex. Two of
our School Captains will be reading poems at the 6am dawn service (Ari & Amelia). The morning will then move
to the tavern for breakfast. All Agnes Water State School students are then asked to congregate outside
the tavern at around 9:30am to march down to ANZAC memorial display for the 10:15 main service. Two of
our School Captains will also read poems at this service (Tarnia & Mia). It would be great to see a good
number of Agnes Water SS students at the march – please meet us outside the tavern at 9:30am.
Thank you
This week, we have 2/3MH, 5/6LS, 5/6H and the Student Council doing write-ups for the newsletter on the
following pages. We will continue this feature of our newsletters in term two. On behalf of everyone at Agnes
Water State School I wish everyone in our learning community a Happy Easter with loved ones! Remember,
if you’re travelling please drive carefully and get to your destination safely. Enjoy the chocolate too!
Stay safe everyone and keep learning! Tim Loughland – Principal

FROM THE HEAD OF CURRICULUM
Mrs Leigh Tankey
Moderation Success In week 8 all of our staff stayed back at school to work together and share examples of student work from each class. Together we discussed the strengths and areas for improvement, and reached consensus about the grades given. The rich professional conversation that arises from these sorts of sessions help make sure we continually reflect and improve our way of working with our students. We don’t teach in our own rooms in isolation, we are a team that supports and works together. In the week leading up to the Moderation session teachers were in conversation with each other about judgements they made about student work – this has ensured wonderful consistency of the way we assess the curriculum. This week I have worked with teachers one on one preparing and planning ideas for term 2 English. We use the knowledge gained from our conversations about student work to inform where we go next, all the while aligning with the Australian Curriculum. Wellbeing for our Children Smiling Mind has teamed up with the Lego Movie to produce some fun meditations with a twist – helping make it more relatable. At Agnes Water State School we are really dedicated to making sure well-being isn’t just something we talk about on a special day or week. We weave it into our daily work and a Smiling Mind meditation every couple of days with your child at home will reap great benefits and enhance the work we are doing at school. Thank you so much to parents who have let me know how they use this, we love hearing from you.
https://app.smilingmind.com.au/sessions/443/1271/ Fun Car Trip games to build thinking! Many families embark on road trips during this time and while at times this can be long and stressful (are we there yet!), it can also be a great opportunity for some valuable conversations and games to help time pass. Recently Mrs Heenan and myself attended an extremely worthwhile and insightful conference about the art of teaching. Some of the strategies we learnt about for the classroom can be fun for families too. These are things like: What is the question? Think of a word and then see how many questions you can come up with to give that word as an answer. For example, if the answer is MONDAY, the question could be – ‘What is the day we all look forward to every week?’ or ‘What is the day we all having swimming lessons?’ You can adjust this to any age and it can really encourage creative thinking. Headlines: In this game everyone has to come up with a 4 or 5 word headline that sums something up. For example, if
my time in this car trip so far was a headline it could be something like Tankey children break toilet stop record! CSI (Colour, Symbol, Image): in this strategy we think of a concept and we ask what Colour, Symbol and Image could be used about it. You can gain some really important knowledge from your child by asking why they chose that colour etc.
“Celebrate what you want to see more of.” Tom Peters What wonderful things can you see happening in our school? Once we start looking for the positives in a place it is amazing what we can find. This week I would like to celebrate the fantastic efforts of Mrs Keryn Heenan, our year 1/2 teacher. Mrs Heenan encourages a love of learning for each individual through celebrating difference. She builds on student strengths and creates a culture of curiosity and wonder. Mrs Heenan values the bond she forms with families, knowing that when parents and teachers work together, the benefits for the children are endless. Thanks Mrs Heenan, we appreciate you! Please share what you see…email me at [email protected] so we can all benefit from the dedication of our educators. I look forward to continuing to be a part of this very professional, caring and inspiring team. Yours in Learning, Mrs Leigh Tankey

SPORTS NEWS
Mr Stuart Lane With a busy term coming to an end it only seems to get busier which I really enjoy. I am looking forward to the end of
term with final Cross Country preparations being done I could not think of a better way to finish the first term.
I would like to really celebrate the achievements of our Years 1-3 students who absolutely blew me off my feet with
the effort they competed in during our first ever swimming carnival. This event was a great way to showcase the
students’ progress during term 1. We are now really starting to see the benefits of swimming lessons at school as well
as out of school lessons. I think you would all agree that learning to swim is a vital part for anyone’s development.
Thank you to the brave parents who came along and weren’t deterred by the rain. With such a small venue it
sounded like there was 100 parents there with the volume of encouragement and cheering. I am looking forward to
developing the swimming carnival and yes carnivals even more.
A big thank you goes to Terri and Kaz, their expertise are invaluable and it is great to work with such passionate
people about swimming. Also to our House Captains and last minute inclusions our School Captains who were
brought along to introduce war cries and help handing out ribbons, these students really stepped up to the challenge
and worked great under pressure.
Our Annual Cross Country is scheduled for Friday the 5th April. I would like to share with you some changes that have
happened in recent years making our Cross Country one of a kind. Firstly we began only running our 10,11 and 12
years students, now we run all ages from 5 years old to 12 years old. Secondly we use to run 1km laps so 3km would
be 3 laps, this was difficult to keep track of how many laps students had done and also a bit boring for competitors.
Look out for photos of the Cross Country in Term 2.

2/3MH – Mrs Hibbett
What a great term is has been.
As a new teacher at the school our class has been offered a great deal of advice and have been pointing me in the
right direction to ensure I do things ‘the Agnes way.” We have developed a strong understanding of self-respect and
how this helps us work well and enjoy being with a variety of personalities. I admire the growth I have seen in their
level of respect which has been demonstrated by students doing random acts of kindness for their peers. Although, it
is making my job of selecting student of the week and student of the month increasingly difficult.
It was been wonderful watching our class develop and their little minds grow as they have increased in confidence
and been prepared to try their best. Our class motto is ‘If you don’t have a go, you will never know.’ I have enjoyed
observing students stand proud in front of the class as they gave presentations. This has included having fun playing
with words in poetry and presenting something special to the class. We have seen some very relevant items working
within our ‘Celebrations’ theme for HASS. These have included items from other cultures and seeing medals and
other mementoes earned by one of our brave soldiers. The students demonstrated a keen interest in how these were
earned and loved the opportunity to touch ‘real medals’.
We are continuing to develop our numeracy skills with the help of songs and games, as well as having a little healthy
competition with speedy calculation skills. Students will enjoy a new batch of games and rotations next term as we
strive to further develop skills and confidence.
The school had a wonderful day at the beach for celebration day and earned compliments from the public who noted
their happy nature and good manners.
I hope the kids have had as much fun learning as I have – Less the grey hair of course. I’m looking forward to an action
packed term two and being greeted with their smiling faces every morning.
Please find below a picture of 2/3MH working beautifully on their morning warm up activity!

5/6LS – Mr Lane and Mrs Smith
.
As the mosquitoes attacked every single one of us,
we slapped, itched and rubbed. We walked from
path to path seeing different kinds of trees and
creatures like turkeys and beautiful doves walking
around on the gardens ground. As the leaves spin
and twist, falling slowly on the ground, they show all
different colours and shapes. By Iah Zapata
“Welcome to Tondoon Botanical Gardens!” says
Teale our tour guide. We walked through the
magical gardens looking at trees and plants we
had never seen before. We all gasped as Teale
pointed to the three beautiful barking owls
sitting in the tree tops of a massive fig tree.
Struggling to move on from the owls, we then go
to a bridge that goes over a lake with small
fresh water turtles. By Bella Robinson
As the trees rustled, birds chirped and “smack”,
everyone turned around in fright just to see Sam
smacking his leg trying to kill a mosquito. “Shh,” Miss
Smith hushed. There was a bird up ahead, a type of bird
that isn’t usually seen with large groups. As we learn
about all the different birds, animals and the fruit that
can be seen in the garden I get more and more
interested in the nature around us. We get further into
the garden. I start wondering why we pushed all of this
beauty away to build machines, cities, towns and
pollution. By Zoe Rohriach-Ward
I liked to see the Bagu and Jiman sculptures made
of bits of wood and sticks used to make fires. I
also like the way Ellarose Savage reused the ghost
nets to make sculptures. By Mathew
McDougall
What a smart look man, standing tall, right
hand in his pocket, gazing into the distance.
He looked grumpy. His shirt was cracked
and he was very grey. Meet Mr Gladstone.
If you want to meet him too, you can go to
the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery where
there are comfy chairs! By Ryan Sevenson
On Thursday 21st March, 5/6LS
went on excursion to support and
enhance our Visual Art unit. We
were given a guided tour at the
Gladstone Regional Art Gallery of
the Clay Stories exhibition which
featured contemporary artworks
in ceramics created by Indigenous
artists from remote parts of
regional Australia. We also went
on a guided walk of the Tondoon
Botanic Gardens learning about
the various ecosystems
represented at the gardens and
the plants and animals that live
within them.

5/6H - Mrs Hartley Year 5/6H Celebrated their hard work and great behaviour with footy, friends and heaps of fun on Celebration Day. The
Year 5’s had the opportunity to combine with the other year 5’s while the Year 6’s got together as well. Starting the day
with some “Cave Man, Cave Woman” and Ms H’s awesome play list, followed by Fun at 1770, including a free sausage
sizzle. The afternoon was pretty chilled with a choice of art, computers or an old movie. Year 5/6H are really worth
celebrating!

Student Council
Bullying, No way!
We would like to thank all of the children who participated in the Bullying, No way!
Day of Action.
On the 15th of March, children all over the school were wearing orange and
donating a gold coin donation for the anti-bulling day. We raised a total amount of
$205.20. The money that we have raised will go to Head Space, an Australian non-
profit organisation for youth mental health, established by the Australian
government in 2006. You can find them here: https://headspace.org.au
Students throughout the school have been learning about bullying and how to
prevent it. They have been taught to do the high five: to tell bullies to stop, ignore,
talk firmly, walk away and to report to a trusted adult.
Lessons were taken from the ‘Bullying, No way!’ website -
https://bullyingnoway.gov.au
This site contains lots of resources to support both children and parents.

Meet the House Captains!
Meet the House Captains for 2019
My name is Riley Thompson and I am the 2019 Ray’s House Captain along with Darval
Robertson –Cipak. I was very nervous reading my speech up on stage to all the other
kids, but I reckon I did pretty well. I’m really looking forward to leading all the other
students with Darval. I have wanted to help the school with sport since I was young. I
have been doing all my jobs to the best of my abilities. I always wear my uniform and
badges with pride. I like to play tennis, soccer and go motorbike riding with my dad. I
will lead Rays to victory for 2019.
Hello my name is Darval Robertson Cipak and I plan to be a great school House Captain
for RAYS, along with Riley Thomson. Hopefully, in my last year, WE WIN! I have a good
feeling about this team, that this year will be different. I will lead this team to glory with
Riley. We will sing our war cries as loud as possible. We will be victorious!
Let’s go Sharks!
Hello my name is Maxi Wood and I am a SHARKS House Captain at Agnes Water
State School. I am so glad that I get to share House Captain with Haiden. Cross
country and athletics days are not too far away and I can’t wait to lift the winning
trophy just like last year’s Sharks House Captains did.
Go Sharks! Hello my name is Haiden Campbell and I am a proud Sharks House Captain with Maxi
Wood. I have waited 6 years to be the leader of the Sharks. I know if the Sharks work
together we can win the trophy again this year! It is an honour to lead the Sharks with
Maxi in 2019.
Stingers Hello my name is Isabella Robinson and I am proud to be 2019’s Stingers House
Captain. I can’t wait to cheer on our amazing team along with Sam Tankey, Stingers’
other House Captain. I love my new job, even if I am the only girl, it’s still amazing. I
wear my badges with pride, and always show sportsmanship.
Go Stingers
I don’t think that the badges are the thing that make you the most supportive person. The most
supportive person is the person who cheers the loudest. I am honoured to be House Captain
alongside Bella Robinson. We will lead the Stingers to victory while cheering at the top of our lungs,
we will be victorious!

Agnes Water Bush Turkeys AFL Squad – Mr Gourlay
On Wednesday 20th March, 25 students from Years 4 to 6 travelled to Bundaberg to compete in the 2019 AFL
Queensland Schools Cup. Our school fielded two competitive teams against the best in Bundaberg. Our team in Pool
A had a couple of narrow defeats, which could have gone either way. After this disappointment the boys rallied and
managed to defeat a strong finishing Burnett Heads by three points. Our team in Pool B had it much tougher, playing
against some seasoned competitors but will no doubt be better for the experience moving forward. Coach of the Pool
B team Michelle Millar was very proud of the boys, who showed plenty of commitment and
positive team spirit.
Agnes Water Tennis – Angie Draheim
The annual under 12’s Bundaberg Primary school tennis trials were held last week. Agnes Water SS was well
represented with a team of 10 boys and 2 girls. Angie Draheim was invited to run the tournament which had the largest
number of nominations for 4 years. Students were eager to get on court. All matches were of singles format and if
you lost, you were still in the feed in draw and more matches to play with a chance of making the representative
team. Our students stepped up and for many this was their first ever tennis tournament and a huge jump up from
their Red Ball matches in Brisbane earlier this year. The future looks promising with the enthusiasm and skill displayed
last Thursday. A huge congratulations to Maxi Wood who was the only boy to be undefeated on the day and now heads
to Hervey Bay in May. A huge Thankyou to all the parents who travelled and supported their tennis champion. Angie
will have some school holiday tennis next week and Term 2 after school classes begin in week 2. Please contact Angie
on 0409971401 for details.
