The MPU was abuzz from 3.30pm, with parents and carers lining up to speak to their childs teachers. The number of parents attending was extremely heartening and teachers reported that they were engaged all afternoon in meaningful and worthwhile conversations about student s learning, successes and needs. I had some lovely conversations with parents and always enjoy this opportunity to chat and connect somewhat informally with our community. I saw many parents also taking the opportunity to chat with each other and one parent commented that she could feel the positive energy in the MPU from the moment she walked in. We took the opportunity to encourage parents and carers to take a brief survey, capturing their views on a number of matters, and to also vote for our Project Funding submission for adult playground fitness equipment for the school on the Services NSW site. We are extremely grateful to all who participated in these as they will provide invaluable feedback and, hopefully, funding for the school. I know logging into the Services NSW website is a tedious process but would encourage all to persevere to help us toward being awarded the exciting equipment grant. We then held our first, of what will become regular, Parent Forums. The Forum was an initiative to capture the voice of those who may be unable to attend P&C meetings or provide feedback in other ways, and what a wonderful success it was in achieving this! I was fascinated by the suggestions, ideas, opinions and even philosophies put forward and have a lot of valued information to digest and incorporate into our future planning. As I guaranteed the parents, carers and community members in attendance, community voice is extremely valued at Nimbin Central School and every attempt will be made to use this feedback in a meaningful way. NIMBIN CENTRAL SCHOOL “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible”

From the Principal (cont). A very big thank you to all our parents, carers and community members who attended these events and made them so worthwhile for all stakeholders at Nimbin Central School. A special thank you to Anne Bowden—our Community Liaison Officer, Josh Howard, Leader-Community Engagement Team, Shizuka Oki, President - P&C and Tee Prikulas—P&C member, for their hard work in making this night happen in such a successful manner and to Josh for also providing the delicious soup! After a very busy day dealing with challenging issues that arise in every school it was inspiring and reaffirming to be part of these events and be reminded of the wonderful school and community that is Nimbin Central.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Hi everyone! Firstly I would like to say how privileged I feel to be appointed as the substantive Deputy Principal of Nimbin Central School. It is a fantastic school with a diverse, progressive and open-minded culture and I feel very lucky to have landed here! I would like to thank all the parents and carers who came along to the Parent/Teacher meetings last Tuesday evening. There was a fantastic turnout and the staff were flat-out all night. Regular constructive communication between teachers and parents/carers really is of great benefit to student outcomes. An especially big extra thanks also to parents and carers who stayed behind for the forum afterwards. We shared some delicious soup (cooked by Maths teacher and budding chef Josh Howard) and engaged in some robust, complex and enlightening discussion about education. So many excellent ideas were put forward that it is difficult to know where to start! We are planning to make Parent/Carer forums a regular part of our school calendar. One point that was made at the forum was that many parents are not sure how they can get

involved in the school as a volunteer. Our response to this is “Yes Please!” If you have time to

come and volunteer at the school please contact Cath or myself and we can chat about how your

skills and knowledge can be put to use.

K—6 NEWS The pencils are sharpened, books are stacked and the playground is ready for another term of great learning. Welcome back to Term 3 and it’s great to see the happy smiles on the student’s faces. Parent Teacher Conferences Thank you to the many parents who were able to attend the Parent-Teacher Conferences. Teacher conversations give you a great opportunity to learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development and to help your child’s teachers understand more about your child. It’s a wonderful way to engage family and community in a partnership with the school, so that the students feel supported and encouraged to realize and strive for academic, social and personal success. House Keeping Matters: Just a couple of everyday routine reminders which will help your child at school: *Please provide your child with a snack- piece of fruit for the mid-morning session. They are quite hungry at this point of the day and appreciate a little snack. If your child is placing an order at the canteen remember to add something for fruit break. *Pack a little extra during this time of the season as the students are finishing their lunches and are requiring more to eat. *Ensure that your child has a school bag and a hat. Hats can be kept at school and need to be worn regularly. *Being at school on time. It becomes quite unsettling for a student if they start the day late. The beginning of the day is when details, routines, expectations, future activities, and organisation are discussed, so it’s important for your child to be present and start the day with the right focus and not feel left out. Last term was a very busy one and this term appears to be the same so I hope the calendar below outlining the coming activities helps you to prepare for them.

As always if you have any concerns about your child’s education please talk to us so that we can make your child’s schooling a happy and positive learning experience. Thank you for your support.

K—6 News (Cont). Peer Support Program Our Peer Support Programs starts Friday in Week 3. This term, all students will be participating in the Moving Forward module which focuses on resilience. The experiences help children to identify their qualities and strengths, develop skills, respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges. Students will establish connections with other members of their group and develop an agreement to help them to work together. Students will discuss challenging situations and some resilient and non-resilient responses. We encourage parents and carers to discuss the program with your child and encourage them take an active role in the activities. NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee On Tuesday the 6

th of August we are holding the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee Challenge for Years

3 and 4 (Junior) and Years 5 and 6 (Senior) students. Participating in the challenge provides a fun and educational opportunity for students to engage in spelling, improve their vocabulary and enrich their personal and school life. The challenge will take place in the MPU at Nimbin Central School at 9.30am. Parents, carers, families and friends are invited to attend. The official word lists for the 2019 Premier’s Spelling Bee are provided by Macquarie Dictionary. Word categories include Arts, Food and Nutrition, Plants and Animals, Science and Technology & Geography as well as the General lists. Word lists have been distributed to interested students. Please see Mrs Steel if your child needs another copy of the word list.

Vote now for our favourite projects!

Our P&C has applied for a State Government grant to purchase fitness stations/adult play gym for our secondary students valued at $68000. To get the grant we need your vote. Our project is entitled: MCP19-02830, Building Wellbeing in our Young People. It will be included in the public vote in our electorate. VOTING OPENS ON 15 JULY & CLOSES ON 15 AUGUST 2019. It is a bit of a tedious effort to vote but please stick with it to register your vote so we are in with a chance. If you're 16 years or over and living in NSW, you can have your say on projects in your area that will be funded through My Community Project, through the public vote that is open now. To vote, you'll need:

a MyServiceNSW Account

your Medicare Card to verify your name and age

your NSW residential address to identify your electorate You'll need to pick between three and five projects in your electorate, arrange them in order of your preference, then submit your vote. The projects with the most community support through the public vote will receive funding.

You can vote at mycommunityproject.service.nsw.gov.au or a Service NSW Centre near you.

We need your vote and the votes of all your family and friends. Having ninja style workout equipment would be fabulous for our students—and some of us too!

Thanks for your support,

Anne Bowden Community Liaison Officer

FROM THE FRONT OFFICE Change to Notification of Attendance Starting Week 3 Nimbin Central School will be trialling Absences Notification via SMS. This will allow parents & carers to reply to the SMS with the reason their child is not at school. You can help support this new process by ensuring your mobile number and email address are up to date. You can simply update your details via the School Stream App (available from the App Store or Google Play), emailing the School at [email protected] or phoning the office on 02 6689 1355. Like any new process we understand there could be some hiccups and we appreciate your patience and understanding. If you do receive an SMS stating your child is absent and you believe your child is at school, please notify the school ASAP by simply replying to the SMS or phoning the school so we can investigate the anomaly. Sarah Murphy

Library Book Muster Please send back in all Library books and check if your student has any on loan. Our Library has some wonderful books so we hope that they keep circulating rather than languishing under a bed somewhere. Our system is: we send regular ‘reminder of overdue loan’ emails to secondary students, then a paper reminder for the third request, followed by a letter requesting payment to replace the book. Primary school students are given three paper reminders, personal verbal requests and then a letter asking for replacement of the book. If you give us an email address, we can also email reminders to parents. If you know you have returned it to us (not the town Library RTRL) then we can start searching here on shelves and in classrooms. There is a black returns box at the front office. Thanks for your assistance with this.
