MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM

Dear KHPS Families;

Every year across the country schools celebrate the joy and importance of reading through the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) Book Week. Last week we celebrated Book Week’s 2019 theme, Reading Is My Secret Power, and reading is truly a secret power: it takes us to other communities and fantasy worlds, supports us to acquire new knowledge, enhances your vocabulary and expression, and can affirm who we are. You may already be aware of the CBCA’s website, Reading Time (http://readingtime.com.au), which reviews a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages from early childhood to adulthood.

Another very useful resource for families is an article published in The Conversation, Six things you should do when reading with your kids http://theconversation.com/six-things-you-should-do-when-reading-with-your-kids-99637 . This article contains simple yet powerful evidence-based tips for reading with your child, an important strategy at school and at home from early childhood and even after a child becomes an independent reader.

Teachers at KHPS have been reading a professional text, Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller. This professional learning is supporting our staff to make small shifts in teaching reading to better support and stretch the reading development of every child.

Gratitude

“Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.” - Eileen Caddy

Our English Action Team for planning and implementing learning around Book Week.

Two of our parents, Fiona Keele and Maria Batras, as well as Karen Roberts and all staff, for the significant work they are putting into submitting applications to win grants that will support us to make improvements to our facility.

To Deb Panakos, our Business Manager, and Paul Khazaal, a member of our School Council, for their skilful stewardship of our Finance Sub-Committee

Our Foundation team offered our neighbours at Farm Road Pre School an open afternoon to come and see our Foundation classrooms.

To all of our students who represented our school at various events and excursions with engagement and enthusiasm. You make yourselves and all of us proud.

All staff for their hard work on Friday’s Curriculum Day. Teachers engaged in a webinar with internationally recognised expert in school improvement, Andy Hargreaves, and participated in our school review. It was a productive day with new learning about ways in which our staff can work together to improve the achievement, engagement and wellbeing of our students.

Celebrations

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller

Kingston Heath Primary School had many moments of celebration this past fortnight. You can view these on our Official Kingston Heath Primary School Facebook page. A few notable celebrations were:

There were many highlights of our Book Week Celebration. If you were able to join our Book Week Parade on Monday morning, we hope you had fun with us. I myself, saw many Harry Potters, different Superheros, and even a Pippy Longstocking. You may have noticed the staff dressed as a character from the Mr and Miss Men series. What fun!

Our School Athletics for years 3 to 6 was a big success on Wednesday last week. We have many talented athletes at Kingston Heath Primary School.

Also last week, one student from each year level attended a Writer’s Conference at Beaumaris Secondary College.

And finally, we have a few important reminders for you:

Reminders School Production: KHPS’ school production is coming upon us very soon. Our students and Mrs Fallon are

looking forward to providing you a night’s entertainment. To purchase tickets, please see the link provided in a recent COMPASS post.

Road Safety Though Farm Road is not overly busy for a Melbourne city street, we still need to be mindful of road rules that are designed to keep us and our children safe. Please use the school crossing to cross Farm Road before and after school.

Each year we ask a random selection of parents to complete the Attitudes to School Survey. If you were selected, you will have received an email with a link to the survey. If you have not already done so, please do take the time to complete this survey. It is one of the key pieces of data we collect from our parent community to help us shape our ongoing improvement efforts. I have been asked more than a few times whether this is truly a random selection, and I can state unequivocally that, yes, we follow an Education Department process to randomly generate the names of parents who will be invited to participate in the survey.

In the next fortnight, students will receive and bring home from school their 2019 NAPLAN. Please watch the COMPASS feed for more information about 2019 NAPLAN

Enrolments: If you have not already done so, please contact the front office to let them know if your child will not be at KHPS in 2020. These numbers underpin our planning and budgeting for 2020, processes that are beginning now.

Our year 1 / 2 school working bee will be on Saturday 7th September 2019. Watch COMPASS for more information and a call for volunteers.

Have a fabulous and safe weekend, everyone! As always, please contact us if you wish to discuss your child’s learning or other areas of concern or celebration at Kingston Heath Primary School. We very much believe that excellent student outcomes arise from strong partnerships..

Your Principal Team,

Sherri Lake and Karen Roberts

PYP Corner

Welcome to the PYP Corner! In this section you will be updated on any PYP

related topics, student action, answers to PYP questions, etc.

Transdisciplinary Themes

One of the most significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years

Programme is the six Transdisciplinary Themes.

These themes are about issues that have meaning for, and are important

to, all of us. The programme offers a balance between learning about or

through the subject areas, and learning beyond them. The six themes of

global significance create a Transdisciplinary framework that allows

students to “step up” beyond the confines of learning within subject areas.

The programme focuses on the development of the whole child as an

inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world

outside.

Who we are

Where we are in place and time

How we express ourselves

How the world works

How we organize ourselves

Sharing the planet

The six transdisciplinary themes help teachers to develop a programme of

inquiry that allow for in-depth investigations into important ideas and

requiring a high level of involvement on the part of the students. These

inquiries are substantial, authentic and usually last for several weeks.

Please don’t forget to ask your child’s class teacher what they are

inquiring into next.

Table Talk Question

“What are the UN Goals and why were they implemented? What do

they look like in Australia and what do they look like in another

country?”

Science Week (12-16 August)

During Science Week, 5/6 C enjoyed learning about Science with the

highlight being participating in Science experiment. Students were

required to predict, observe and record the effects that coating a

small piece of paper in water or ethanol have on the time and intensi-

ty of the burning rate. Everyone was excited to watch and learn

about what happens when paper is dipped in ethanol, which creates

a spectacular high intensity blue flame, burning off the ethanol before burning the paper.

We would like to thank our Pre-Service teacher, Mrs Bronwen Lasky for all her effort over the

previous three weeks and especially her passion for teaching Science.

sun was shining! Thank you to all those who volunteered their time, we really

appreciate it.

Congratulations to all who participated and represent their house with

enthusiasm and pride. Good luck to all those who are representing KHPS at

Each fortnight we will include a question that you and your family can discuss.

Table Talk Question: Have you ever been to the Melbourne Museum? What was your favourite exhibit?

Don’t forget to play Word Mania! The competition final is during Week 7!

Book Week

On Monday 19th of August, the whole school dressed up in costumes for book week. All students who partici-

pated did a fantastic job dressing up and the parade in the morning was enjoyed by all. After recess the students

from grade two came to learning centre three to read with the grade three and four students and complete

some lessons that the 3/4 students had prepared for them. The 3/4s showed great leadership and prepared

excellent lessons for the grade two students.

Athletics Day

On Tuesday students from grades 3-6 participated in our house athletics day. We went to Dolamore reserve

and students competed in track and field events. Everyone had a great day there and it was fantastic to see

students competing in their chosen events with lots of enthusiasm.

Kitchen Garden

During kitchen garden last week, grades 3 and 4 made a delicious meal of falafel, pita bread, hummus, tabouli

and lemon slice. Students have been enjoying their time in the kitchen this year and have developed their

knife skills and knowledge of the ingredients that we use in the kitchen. The kitchen garden program provides

students with great opportunities to work independently and develop skills that they will continue to use for

years to come.

Student Reflections for Kitchen Garden:

‘I liked making the lemon slice and it was my favourite part of the meal.’ - Hannah A
