PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,
I hope everybody enjoyed the Melbourne Cup break (particularly those families who were
able to have a long weekend) and happy Diwali to those members of our school
community who celebrated this very important festival. It has been wonderful to hear how
various families have celebrated this important Hindi event. For those who may not be
aware, Diwali is popular festival not just amongst Hindus, but in other religions such as
Buddhism and Sikkhism. It signifies the triumph of good over evil and believed to be the
time of transition from darkness unto light - the light that empowers us to commit
ourselves to good deeds.
Diwali is celebrated for a period of 5 days, that started on Monday 24th of October and
each day has its own significance and rituals. The third day is celebrated as the main
Diwali festival, and is known as the "festival of lights".
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (cont’d)
The word Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps". In support for the Festival of Lights, iconic buildings of
Melbourne were illuminated from October 17-22 such as the Parliament of Victoria, the Museum, the
Exhibition Building, Consulate General of India building, Australia India Institute, Federation Square, among
others. Diwali is even being celebrated at Flinders Street and particularly Melbourne Airport from 18-26
October. This is the first time the Melbourne Airport is involved in these festive celebrations, showcasing a
variety of dance and music performances through the event. A special fireworks display was also organized on
the Yarra River on the 22nd
October. It really is wonderful to see the wider Victorian community embrace this
very special occasion.
New Junior Courtyard Area
Thank you to the numerous parents who have commented how much they and their children enjoy and
appreciate the new courtyard area. It certainly has made an enormous difference to the recreational space for the
Year Prep to Two students. This week we are expecting the shade sails to be installed which will complete this
area of the school – for now!
Parent Opinion Survey
Last week we received the results of the 2011 Parent Opinion survey and I am very pleased to report that they
were tremendously positive which indicates that our school community is extremely pleased as to how our
school is progressing. Of the 18 variables 16 were in the 4th quartile and the remaining 2 high in the 3
rd. A
sincere thank you to those families who completed the survey as your feedback is invaluable. Also
congratulations, well done and thank you to the wonderful staff who work tirelessly for the benefit of the
children and their families. Glen Waverley Primary School is an outstanding school because we all work
together for the common goal of providing the best possible education for our students – thank you everyone!
Car Park and Turning Circle
Thank you everyone for making a concerted effort with the car park and turning circle and to those parents who
have contacted me to comment on the improvement. Having two staff members on after school duty has made a
big difference however the real point of difference is the manner and attitude in which parents are approaching
this area of our school. A reminder that it is extremely important that we all continue to be cautious and travel at
5 km/hr for the safety and wellbeing of all members of our school community.
Life Education Van
The Life Education Van was once again a huge success with the children thoroughly enjoying the various
programs. It has also been wonderful to see the follow up classroom activities the children have completed in
order to reinforce the concepts covered. It was wonderful to see the large number of parents who were able to
attend the parent information session as it was terrific to be provided with an overview of the program. As
parents it really is important that we are aware of the content of the educational programs being offered to our
children as the more informed we are the more we can assist our children. I would also like to acknowledge and
congratulate Ms. Barnett for her outstanding organisation of this incursion.
John Monash Science School Initiative
Congratulations and well done to Nikita, Vinuri,
Eishitha and Yi Jie for their participation in the
inaugural “Little Scientist Big Science” program
at the John Monash Science School. The
children completed some amazing projects and
were able to showcase their learning at last
week‟s Science Fair. Vinuri and Yi Jie‟s learnt
about Echolocation and Eishitha and Nikita
about electricity in fruit and vegetables. Their
projects were of a very high calibre and a real
credit to the children. A sincere thank you and
congratulations must also go to Ms. Dale for
coordinating this program which included
driving the children to and from the venue and
overseeing their final projects – predominately
during the luncheon break. Well done everyone!
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (cont’d)
Prep Prom
What a fantastic evening was
held recently when we
celebrated the Prep children
completing their first year of
schooling by holding their Prep
Prom. The children looked
absolutely marvellous in their
“summer costumes” as they
sang a number of summer /
beach songs. Throughout the
night they demonstrated just
how much they have grown and
developed as they performed a number of songs and dances
for their families and teachers in a very confident manner. As
mentioned on the evening, their ability to present and speak
in front of a large audience is just amazing! Thank you to all
of the Prep families for all of your efforts in preparing the
students, our magnificent Prep teachers (Mrs. Jacobs and
Mrs. Gough), assistant Rosemary who worked tirelessly with
the children and our fantastic School Captains who also did
us all proud with the manner they assisted on the evening. Congratulations everyone!
Enrolments
We are currently preparing for the 2012 school year and would really like your assistance in providing us with
as much information as possible regarding your intentions for next year. If you believe you will not be
returning to Glen Waverley for the 2012 school year could you please write me a short note indicating so.
As I am sure you would understand, we need to commence the process of selecting staff and allocate students to
classes – your cooperation with this issue is greatly appreciated and thank you to those families who have
already done so.
Warm Weather
As everyone would be aware, the weather is beginning to warm up, as a result we strongly encourage all of the
students to ensure they bring a drink bottle to school, some sunscreen and naturally their sun smart school hat. A
water bottle on the desk will enable the children to have a quick drink and alleviate the need to leave the room.
If a child does not have a hat at school they are required to play in the shade.
2012 School Fees
As I‟m sure the majority of families would be aware, as a Victorian Government school the Government
provides for much of our school‟s basic operational requirements with a financial grant that is paid to the school
in quarterly instalments. This covers items such as cleaning, gas and electricity, water rates, facilities, telephone,
furniture, some buildings and grounds maintenance, administration, some curriculum support and professional
development. In order for us to provide educational programs of a standard and quality expected at Glen
Waverley, we need funds in addition to those provided by the Government which is generated by family
contributions. Last week the 2012 School Fees letter was distributed which outlined how school community
funds were used this year and what we have planned for next year. I am extremely grateful to all of the families
who settled their 2011 school account as your support has made a significant difference to our school.
You will note that School Council has differentiated between the Essential Student Stationery Supplies and
Curriculum Requirements as some families are eligible to claim the Essential Student Stationery Supplies (Book
Boxes) when completing their annual tax return. We strongly advise to keep a copy of the School Fees notice
and receipt for such purposes. Naturally as with all school related financial issues, if a family requires making
additional arrangements please do not hesitate to contact me. Payments can be made from the beginning of this
week - a reminder that a $10 discount applies if you settle your account prior to the end of the 2011 school year.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (cont’d) Year Book
The draft of our inaugural Year Book was sent to the printers last week and we are hoping the final copy (which
will be distributed to all families) will arrive by the end of this month. The Year Book promises to be a fantastic
memento which I am confident all families will enjoy reading for many years to come!

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
As I walk around the school it is great to see students persisting with their work on a daily basis and taking the opportunity of getting involved in so many activities. To mention just a few: Choir & Dance Rehearsals, Literacy & Numeracy Workshops, Kids Teaching Kids, Science Incursion, Discovering ipads, NXT Robotics Expert Team and Inter-school sport. For this to happen the staff at Glen Waverley Primary School make a point of working together, collaboratively and cooperatively to help our students see the benefits to all in sharing ideas, making compromising on choices and making an effort to get along with others. PARENT PARTICIPATION Parental involvement is vital to the on-going development of this wonderful school. We should not take for granted the commitment of individuals who have contributed their skills and expertise to ensure Glen Waverley Primary School has continued to grow and develop. I encourage all parents to consider how they can become involved in our school Have you ever thought how you could become involved in the school? Glen Waverley Primary School offers a range of opportunities for parents to become involved in our community. The involvement of parents helps break down some of the mystique about school that can exist for children.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
When children see school as an extension of home rather than an institution their chances of success are better. Parental participation also demonstrates to children that they value their learning and their school. A positive attitude to school and learning is a proven criterion for success as a student. Some avenues open to parents include:
Classroom reading
School Council
Coaching interschool sport
Presenting to the children about a topic of expertise If you are interested in having a chat about participating in our school, please feel free to contact me at school, as I’d love to hear from you. Prep Prom What a wonderful night we had at the school Prep Prom. This was my first Prep Prom and I was so proud of all
of the children for their performances. They certainly showed us how talented they are and how enthusiastic
they were to showcase their talents. Thank you to all of our families who attended and supported this event. A
special thank you to our marvellous prep teaching and support staff who spent many hours preparing the
children for the evening .They showed us all how committed they are to our school and to the children.
World Teacher’s Day Friday 28 October 2011- a day when the wonderful, privileged work of teachers around the wold is recognised and celebrated. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the fantastic teachers we have here at Glen Waverley Primary School. It is a pleasure to talk with the teachers about their class and I have noticed that they have all developed a very strong relationship with the children and show a ‘parental’ type of care for their wellbeing and development. Teaching is sometimes a challenging profession but also extremely rewarding one. So take the time to thank your child’s teacher for all they do SUNSMART Many thanks to the parents who have ensured students have hats for this term, however there are still a few children who do not have their school hats with them. Any child without a hat will not be permitted to participate in outdoor activities and will need to remain in the shaded areas during recess and lunch. Summer fun with your children Use some chalk to mark out a target on a wall to throw a large or small ball at. Trace a circle on a brick wall (away from windows!) as big as a bin lid. Place some sticks at different distances away from your target. Each distance can be worth 1-5 points, 5 points being the furthest distance. Allow yourself five throws at each distance. See how many times you hit your target and see how many points you get. You may like to try your opposite hand! Darren McDonald Assistant Principal

This fortnight‟s Kids Corner section contains two terrific stories written by Jacinta and Dhivyan in 3JE.
Once upon a time there was a girl named Jacinta. She looked very pretty. She liked lots of things to do with adventure. She
also was a rock collector. She lived with her mum and her brother in a small house. They had a cat named Cookie. Cookie
was cheeky but helpful too. One day she woke up in her bed so excited. She was going to fly on an aeroplane to Africa.
They were going to Africa for a holiday.
She ran down the stairs to eat her breakfast when, she saw something glowing in the cupboard. She walked closer to the
cupboard and opened it. There was a strong force pulling her in. Cookie was going to fly in but at Jacinta grabbed him.
Jacinta tried to hold onto the cupboard door but the force was too strong. Jacinta fell in the cupboard which was a portal!
She fell in a swamp of water. Jacinta swam to the surface to breathe.
When she opened her eyes she was in a new world. Jacinta swam to Cookie who luckily landed on the soft grass. When
Jacinta got out of the water Cookie ran and sat on Jacinta‟s lap.
„Good boy‟ praised Jacinta to Cookie. Cookie started to purr.
In the bushes there was a robot gang. They all were evil. They were going to take over Earth.
One robot was hiding in the bushes next to Jacinta. Jacinta put Cookie down on the ground. Jacinta stood up, grabbed a big
stick and wacked the bush next to her. A big buzz went off in the bush that Jacinta wacked. Then Jacinta realised that a
camera was watching her.An alarm went off from nowhere. A whole lot of robots came crowding around Jacinta. Jacinta
was trapped. Then a short undersized bird came swooping down on the robots. „Squawk!‟ cried the bird and all the robots
ran away. Jacinta thanked the bird then, the bird decided to join Jacinta on her adventure to get out of the portal.
When it was midday Jacinta, Cookie and the bird were hungry. Jacinta found an apple tree next to a beautiful river with
fish. Jacinta wanted to make a tree house in the apple tree so they did. Jacinta went out to make a bed. She took it with her
for her tree house. When it was night time Jacinta made a crossbow. Outside she could hear groaning and beeping. „Robots‟
she thought to herself. She got her crossbow and saw robots spawning everywhere.
When it was daytime the robots were burning to ashes. „Aha‟ cried Jacinta. „I could use the ashes for my stove!‟ „I am very
hungry. Maybe that bird could collect some apples‟ she moaned. „Birdy think can you get some apples‟ Jacinta yelled. The
bird returned with a bag full of apples. „You can have one‟ Jacinta whispered. „Meow‟ sobbed Cookie. „Here‟ called
Jacinta. Cookie meowed happily. „Have some pork‟
During the day Jacinta could hear a weird sound outside. She ran outside to see what was happening. „The portal to my
home!‟ she gasped. Jacinta ran into the portal with Cookie and the bird.
„Yay‟ cried Jacinta as she woke up in her bed. She saw Cookie sleeping on her and a bird on her window. „Wow what an
awesome dream I had‟ she whispered to herself. Then she remembered „AFRICA‟.
She ran to the kitchen. She saw something glowing it the cupboard but, but this time she didn‟t open it.
Once upon a time there lived two boys called Dhivyan and Neev, they were spies. Dhivyan was 12 years old and Neev was 15. They had a robot dog and his name was Robdog. He gives you whatever you want. He was a spy to. We live underground and there’s a secret passageway to get in. You need a code to enter it, which is 3812. We live in a gigantic city called Glen Waverley. There was a cruel, evil and bad spy called Mad Max, he was working on machines to tear down the whole city of Glen Waverly. We have to live underground because there were spy cameras everywhere that Mad Max had made. If the cameras see you they shoot lasers that go after you, but they only shoot spies. One day Neev and Dhivyan were drinking spy coffee until Neev’s cup fell. Their underground house shook and there were robots everywhere on top of the house. Mad Max had completed his plan. We asked Robdog for our invisible suit so the cameras couldn’t see us. Dhivyan scanned his spy watch, 8 hours left to complete the mission. That is to get the key in the centre of the Earth to shutdown the robots. Mad Max needs a key to switch it on and off. He teleported the key to the centre of the Earth so nobody could switch the robots off. So Neev and Dhivyan came out and found stairs that led them underground, deeper than their underground house. They even saw a dinosaur.
They needed to kill the dinosaur but instead they captured it with a net. Just then they saw the key past the lava. Then they heard a stomping noise, it was the dinosaur and it had broken free. They moved aside and the dinosaur fell in the volcanic emission. But, it floated so they used the dinosaur as a boat. 5 hours had passed before they reached the key. There was a path to the key. They took a step and razor sharp arrows came but, we managed to dodge them. There were trapped as well. They ran and ultra hot blue flames came. Then at the end of the path there was an ice dragon. He was terrifying and enormous. They got their red lasers and shot the ice dragon but, it used ice to shoot back at them. They quickly got their reflection ice suits on and came back to shoot him. The dragon froze. Then they got the key and it transported them back to the top of the ground. They had found the place to put the key in so they chucked it in. They put the key in, then all of a sudden all of the robots shutdown. So they didn’t need to defeat Mad Max. They did it by playing rock paper scissors. Dhivyan lost and I felt miserable. Then Robdog came and destroyed Mad Max with his super doper ultra bite. Mad Max was destroyed and they had completed the mission and it was all because of Robdog.
