PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,
Welcome to a special Education Week edition of our school newsletter! I hope that everybody has been able to attend some of the exciting events and activities we have provided as part of
our Education Week festivities. It was fabulous to see so many parents at Monday’s special Education Week assembly
and the variety of performances by the children were absolutely brilliant! A sincere thank you and well done to the
members of the school band, the Indian and Chinese Dance troupes, members of the Writer’s Club, the Recorder
Band, the magnificent Prep students with their rendition of the Pirate Poem, the amazing homework assignments and
the Level 4 students’ presentation of their ACMI excursion DVD as part of last term’s media unit. All in all, I felt the
assembly was a terrific way of not only showcasing our school’s outstanding array of educational opportunities and
also promoting the wonderful educational capabilities of our fantastic students but a terrific means of commencing the
week. Thank you to the parents and staff who took a leading role in organising and preparing the students, Krishanu,
Bhakti, Caroline and Kathryn for announcing the participants and to Mrs. Zaki and Mrs. Barnes for their overall
coordination of Education Week.
Our annual Family Fun Day/Cross Country was held on Tuesday and finally we were able to hold a whole school
event with fine weather! Congratulations and well done to all of the students for your most enthusiastic participation,
to the numerous parents who were able to attend and also assist with the cooking and distributing of the lunch – your
efforts are really appreciated by the staff and students! Overall it was a fantastic day which was thoroughly enjoyed by
all.
On Wednesday the children were provided with the opportunity to view a free Oral Health incursion provided by The
Institute of Creative Learning. The performances were a wonderful way to reinforce the importance of oral health and
it was also very pleasing to see the children having so much fun whilst learning!
It was also absolutely wonderful to see so many “special friends” in our school yesterday. It was quite obvious that the
special friends which ranged from grandparents, parents, uncles, aunties, neighbours and family friends thoroughly
enjoyed their time at school and were also quite honoured to have been invited by the children. I did my utmost to
meet and thank them for attending, however if I didn’t get round to someone I would really be grateful if families
could extend my appreciation to your child’s special friend.
The majority of today was based on this year’s Education Week theme of Celebrate Family. We held an outstanding
parade this morning where the children came to school dressed in colours or outfits from their country of origin and it
was so wonderful to see the vast array of colours and the pride in the children’s faces as well. The rest of the day was
spent by the children completing the 3 rotational activities once again based on the theme. A sincere thank you to all
of the families who made the time to complete the “family homework” task we look forward to joining all of the
calico pieces together to create a tapestry of GWPS family symbols.
As everyone would be aware, tonight we have Open Night where all families are invited to attend our school and
participate in activities with the children. I look forward to seeing and chatting with as many families as possible this
evening from 6:30.
Tomorrow we have a terrific means of culminating Education Week for our school with approximately 60 children
attending The Glen Shopping Centre where they will perform on centre stage. We are scheduled to commence at 12
noon and, once again, it would be wonderful to see as many parents as possible there to support and acknowledge the
children’s achievement and courage to do so.
All in all, it has been a very exciting Education Week at our school and I hope the children and families have enjoyed
celebrating the week with us! Mrs. Barnes has prepared a special Education Week page for the newsletter which
includes an array of photographs for everyone to enjoy!
iPad Professional Learning Update
I am hoping and have my fingers crossed that by the time this newsletter arrives home our much anticipated
iPads would have been delivered. Last week Mr. Price and I attended an iPad professional learning seminar
in preparation for our iPad program and wow, as an educationalist and parent I was absolutely gobsmacked
in terms of what this new technology can provide our children – I firmly believe that the personal computer
(PC) is about to become extinct and will be replaced by netbooks and iPads. The iPads are incredibly user
friendly, lightweight, intuitive and have the capability of accessing (at the moment) 350,000 educational apps
(which are effectively software). At the seminar we were demonstrated how quick, simple and easy it is to download a
text book, picture story book and other educational items.
I am convinced that the iPads (or something similar) will revolutionise educational provision. As a parent of two
teenage children my family has spent literally thousands of dollars purchasing very expensive text books over the
years – these are now available at minimal cost and on a platform which is intuitive for our current and future students
and the days of very heavy school bags, which can cause severe back problems, should soon be a thing of the past.
What about primary school children? Some of the apps (short for applications or software) we previewed are tailor
made for primary aged children. There is a vast array of picture story books or novels for other children which read to
you, or when necessary you can select a word for clarification, have inbuilt dictionaries or you can simply flip through
the pages as if you were holding the novel. The epub (short for electronic publication) is an app where the children can
create their own ebook (electronic book) complete with text, graphics, podcasts (voice over) and digital content. These
can be sent to the elibrary and can also be sent to parents as an eportfolio. There are also literally thousands of other
apps for a vast array of topics such as science (human body, space etc) which the children will be able to access –
some are free and others at a minimal cost.
At our school we plan to monitor how our new iPads are used and then formulate a plan for future extension.
One thing that certainly resonated with me is how these relatively inexpensive learning tools make great gifts and
strongly encourage families to purchase one if they are able to do so as the educational benefits are immense. If you
would like any additional information please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Price, Mr. Chapman or myself.
We look forward to sharing the children’s iPad experiences with you in due course. Once again, it would be rather
remiss of me not to mention that the iPad program has been made possible by all of our families paying their 2011
school fees – thank you everyone!
Facilities Update
Our new building continues to move along at a rapid rate of knots and it is wonderful to see it look like a real school
building. Over the past fortnight the workmen have focused on painting, electrical works and cabinetry. Recently I met
with the project manager and site supervisor and they are aiming for the building to be completed by mid-May. After
which we are allowing approximately 6 weeks for landscaping. If all things go according to plan (and the rain stays
away for a little while) we should be in a position to move the Year Prep to Two classes in by the end of Term Two!
How exciting!!
What do we have planned for landscaping and adventure playgrounds – as part of the development of the new
building, School Council and I plan to landscape the area in front of the new building which will entail asphalting,
garden beds and the building of an adventure playground. The adventure playground will consist of joining the 2
existing playgrounds in our school into a “new” playground. The Year 3 to 6 students will have a new playground built
which they have been involved in the selection and design of. The plan is to remove the existing Year 3 – 6 adventure
playground first (and store it for a little while), build the new Year 3 – 6 playground, remove the P- 2 playground and
build a “new” playground for the P- 2 students. A timeline for this is yet to be established as it depends on the
completion of the building, naturally I will keep everyone informed.
Student Uniform
As we move into some very cold and wet weather, a reminder to all families that students are to wear correct school
uniform at all times. It is very important that we work together to ensure that our students are fine ambassadors and
wear our uniform with pride. I would like to highlight that students are allowed to wear a coat or jacket to and from
school in order to keep themselves warm and dry. At school if it is too cold or too wet, the children will remain
indoors.
Curriculum Newsletters
This week the Specialist Team and all of the Levels across our school will distribute this term’s curriculum newsletter
which outlines and provided families with an overview of what is being covered in our classrooms and also in the
specialist areas. I hope everyone finds these to be informative and I look forward to discussing them with parents as
we cross paths.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d)
Flood Appeal
Jesse (Year 5 student) as part of his Cubs requirements approached me about the possibility of implementing a
fundraiser to support families who are still suffering the effects of the floods earlier in the year. Naturally such a
proactive and generous idea was met with enthusiasm hence Jesse is inviting all Glen Waverley Primary School
families to donate non-perishable goods and school stationary which will be supplied to the Smith Family for
distribution. I hope all families can contribute something such as a packet of pasta, tin of food, packet of pencils etc to
support this very worthwhile course. The final day for forwarding donations to school is Friday 27th May.

SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENTS REPORT, MAY 2011
Wow. I have just got back from the School Cross Country run down at Jells park. I have trouble
organising 2 children... how does the school cope with 360? It wouldn't be possible without the
dedication of the school staff and the many parents who volunteer their time to assist. Thank you to
all of the parents who were able to attend to support the day and the overall organisation – your
efforts are really appreciated by everyone!
At the start of the year we had a wish list of things we would like to do this year – upgrade the ICT
infrastructure, an electronic whiteboard in every classroom, improved access to portable computers
(netbooks and iPads). It's only half way through term 2 and these things are well on the way to being
achieved – we are awaiting delivery of the iPads and the whiteboards for the new building of course
need to wait for it to be finished. Behind the scenes, the schools network has been upgraded to cope
with the higher wireless and data traffic these new devices require. This also means the school is
now ready for the progressive implementation of Ultranet (the new state-wide learning management
system for schools). None of this would have been achieved without the funds raised from family
contributions being paid in full.
The new committee members are now settled in their roles. There is lots going on at school, quietly
in the background. There are 4 subcommittees that look at: Administration and Finance; Resources;
Community Development and Fund Raising; and Education.
The Education committee is continuing the review of school policies which will be placed
on our school website for parental input.
The Finance committee is managing our budget and sourcing quotes for work at the school.
The Resources committee have recommended contractors to landscape and consolidate the
junior playgrounds for the new building, paint the main corridor of the school over the next 2
holiday periods and replace the main entry doors. Designs for the new year 3-6 playground
have gone back to the supplier for rework. I am particularly happy with the way Frank has
involved the grade 3 – 6 students in the choice of their new playground. We are also forward
planning for 2012 options for relocating the administration, library and computer rooms with
the aim of moving them into more open spaces within the existing school building.
The Community Development and Fund Raising committee has a full year of events
planned. As usual, any suggestions for fund-raising or assistance at school events are
welcomed.
The Council has approved a curriculum day for Friday 2nd
September, the school concert for Monday
5th September, and various payments for invoices for works to the school infrastructure. Recent work
by the school and the local council appears to have relieved the issues we have been facing with
storm water drainage which is very pleasing.
I have had a parent approach me with suggestions for improvements they would like to see at the
school. I wish to encourage the school community to feel open to approach members of the school
council with suggestions, questions, complaints and feedback about how we are doing. This is our
role – to represent the school community. I look forward to hearing from you all and the best way of
contacting me is via e-mail at: [email protected]
I look forward to hearing from members of our school community.

School Council President
2011 GWPS Cross Country
Congratulations to all our students who participated and assisted with the running of the annual GWPS Cross Country event which was held at Jells Park South on Tuesday. Despite soggy conditions, it was clear that all students had a great day and we were lucky to have the sun shine down on us by the afternoon. It was lovely to see the enthusiasm of all the students and such house spirit amongst our community. Congratulations to Mitchell who were the overall Cross Country Champions for this year.
A special thank you to all the parents who came and supported their children and to the many parents who assisted with providing the BBQ lunch. Thank you also to the support of all the staff here at Glen Waverley as whole school events such as these are not possible without their support and assistance. The students who competed in the 9/10, 11 and 12/13 year age groups and finished in the top 10 places will now represent GWPS at the District Cross Country event which is due to be held on Friday 3rd June at Jells Park (just near the cafe) from 12 noon. Well done to all!!! Samantha Barnett Physical Education Coordinator
The Cross Country By Caitlin 5MP
Before the race I felt scared and nervous of losing the race and not knowing where to go and the older children laughing at me. I thought I would just try the race and see where I came and just have fun. I just did what Kay told me, “Just think about finishing, and don’t worry about anything else.” I came third and I felt excited and happy. My legs felt like jelly when I finished and I could not breathe.
Artists in Schools – 1st workshop with Ms Sabrina Chou
Last Wednesday at LOTE we had a Chinese dance session with the artist Sabrina. The workshop is relating to our performance ‘The Monkey King’. We did Taichi, ribbon dancing and lion dancing. In Taichi, Sabrina explained the history and different moves. We combined all moves and made a dance. In ribbon dance we again learned the history and moves. We danced with the light ribbons to music. Last of all, we did a lion dance. It was a lot of fun and we were all tired after all the dancing. I can’t wait till next time. By Kathryn 6JA
I enjoyed doing lots of poses with Sabrina like crane, monkey and cutting a water melon! We also learned some Taichi moves and then we did some ribbon dancing. It was a lot of fun. By Rusal 5MP I learnt basic Taichi moves, Ribbon Dance and a Kung Fu Panda dance. In Ribbon Dance, Sabrina taught us sophisticated moves. I look forward to learning the awesome Kung Fu Fan dance.
By Pranav 5MP I really enjoyed the session and I had a lot of fun, except for the fact that I got a shorter ribbon than the rest during the ribbon dance. I liked the dancing and I learnt a lot about the history of those classical Chinese dances. I like the way these classical techniques were given a more contemporary touch with modern, upbeat music. The elements blended easily and it becomes a dancing style that appeals more to people like us. By Yijie 6RL
