Hi everyone,

Welcome back old friends and new for the start of Term One which is now well underway. We have been showing a Pop-Up in the gallery in the last couple of weeks featuring some of the items which will be in the relaunched shop.

Now, of course, everyone has been working on “Dreams” the exhibition which will run during the Highway to Hell event on 1 March. A lot of very imaginative displays have been set up in the gallery including a collection of seventies homewares that brought back a few memories and some interesting work created to music of the period. Do come in and have a look. If you are brave enough, take part in the 1 March event there will be lots of activities. If you quail at the thought of all the crowds come in sometime during the three weeks the exhibition will be running—there are some free workshops on to build a giant guitar.

Following ’Dreams’ there will be an exhibition of the Travelling Artist, one of our more popular themes, entry forms included, so paintbrushes out.

Enjoy your art … the Atwell Gnomes

and don’t miss ...

“Highway to Hell”

You must all know about the huge event, “Highway to Hell”, planned as the finale of the Festival of Perth. Canning

Highway will be closed from the Raffles to Fremantle for 10 hours on Sunday March 1 to celebrate the 40 year

anniversary of the death of Bon Scott from AC/DC. We now know that the closure will be from 1pm with the procession

leaving the Raffles at 5pm. The highway will be progressively re-opened from 9pm (once the procession has passed)

Thanks to Steph and her working group Celeste, Kerry, Sally and Michelle for planning the exhibition and

activities both in the leadup to and on Mar 1 and to Kylie for organizing the Leon Pericles feature.

The exhibition (February 17 to March 8) called “Dreams” is now showing in the Gallery, its a bit of a retrospective

focusing on the “Great Australian Dream” (the theme for the truck decorations) and looking at the connection of music and

art and the notion that from the ordinary comes greatness. See the flyer on the Gallery Programme for more activities.

Atwell Advocate

The year has begun with a very warm start

and seems set to continue so for a while yet.

With our AGM happening this month and lots

of meetings taking place behind the scenes,

trying to get plans and approvals for our

proposed new studio underway it has been a

busy few weeks for the Committee. We had

our first group activity making up some glazes

and plan to have some Club glazes available

for general member’s use soon.

This month enjoy the activities put on at Atwell

in celebration of ACDC’s Highway to Hell and

the theme “Dreams” looking at the “connection

of music and art and the notion that from the

ordinary comes greatness”. Potters can enter

the exhibition that will be in the gallery from

Feb 17 – March 8

Anyone interested in joining the South of the River

Potters’ Club is welcome to drop in on a

Wednesday morning and chat to one of the

members. in Room 2/3 at Atwell House. You might

also find them hard at work in the ‘green shed’

behind the gallery. You can now find us at https://

Vale Nic Baranowski

It was with much sadness that I heard that Nic had passed away on Saturday afternoon 8th February. I first met Nic as one of my adult students for pottery. He had seen some ceramic fish and birds while in Turkey and wanted to produce his own versions; after much trial and error he succeeded! He then joined us as a member of SORP, going on to exhibit with the potters, MCAA, the Body Beautiful and City of Melville. Last year, together with his wife Marina, he organised a successful art auction in aid of the Leukaemia Foundation. Nic will be missed both personally and as a member of SORP. Our thoughts and sympathy go out to Marina, (who of course used to help us organise Lunch in the Gallery).

ATWELL HOUSE SPINNERS spinning/knitting/chatting

We are getting good numbers each week even though we are crowded into Room 4, attracted by the air conditioner. There is plenty of noise when we all get talking at once. Great friendship and great afternoon teas. Keep it up ladies.

Gail H. brought in some of her recent lovely work ...always a fine complicated knitted shawl and this week there was also a Fair-Isle cowl. Well done, Gail. You keep up the good work and inspire the rest of us.

No other news. Just keep cool and a smile on your face.

Members are always welcome to join our friendly self-help spinning & knitting group. Every Tues from 12.30 to

3.30pm in Room 4, on the verandah or in the Gallery.

2020

Thursday February 27th Jude Scott will be our first demonstrator of the year.

WANTED Our Arts Centre & Gallery is mainly run by

volunteers. THANKS EVERYONE. We LOVE having volunteers & as you all know, many hands make light work so….

if YOU would like to be part of our friendly team, please ring Chris or Joy on 9330 2800

GalleryShop

Have you checked out the shop next to the Office recently?

Quite often we hear people say that they didn’t even realise we had a

shop at Atwell!

Stephanie Zuvela is currently restocking the shop so please take a

look. She is aiming for fewer items but more variety, changing regularly.

If you think you would like to be a new supplier contact the Office and we will arrange for Stephanie to contact you.

ATWELL HOUSE HALLWAY GALLERY

We like to make the front hall of the house look inviting and arty so are once again calling for interested painters/drawers/printmakers etc to put their names on a new list in the Office.

No hanging fee, 25% Commission on sales.

Please be aware that this area is not under constant supervision and it does get pretty windy through there so works are placed there at your own risk. But many people do pass through this area and will see your work! New and experienced artists are welcome. This can be a good way to start exhibiting if you have not

done so before.

Works need to be small to medium in size, preferably on canvas with a secure hanging cord. Label back and front stating artist, title, medium and price. And provide a list for the Office.

Ring Colleen 9316 4570 for more info ...
