INTRODUCTION Education is very important for every child whether

boy or girl. It is sad that some communities still discriminate against the education of the girl child.

Girl’s education is the need of the hour. Without educating the girls of the country we can't hope for a developed nation.

Girls education is like sowing the seed which gives rise to green, cheerful, and full grown family plant.

It is said that if we educate a man, we educate a man only, but if we educate a woman, we educate the whole family. This highlights the importance of female education.

HISTORY OF INDIAN GIRLS EDUCATION

The history of female education in India has its roots in ancient Vedic age.

Women's employment and education was acknowledged in 1854 by the East India Company's Programme : Wood's Dispatch.

In 1878, the University of Calcutta became one of the first universities to admit female graduates to its degree programmes.

IMPORTANCE OF GIRL’S EDUCATION

EDUCATED FUTURE GENERATIONS :

By sending a girl to school, she is far more likely to ensure that her children also receive an education.

DECREASE INFANT MORALITY : Children of educated women are less likely to die before their first birthday. Primary education alone helps reduce infant mortality significantly, and secondary education helps even more.

Educated women (with greater knowledge of health care and fewer pregnancies) are less likely to die during pregnancy,

DECREASE CHILD MARRIAGE :

Child marriage almost always results in the end of a girl’s schooling. The result is illiterate or barely literate young mothers without adequate tools to build healthy, educated families.

DECREASE POPULATION EXPLOSION :

Educated women tend to have fewer (and healthier) babies.

IMPORTANCE OF GIRL’S EDUCATION INCREASE INVOLMENT IN POLITICAL PROCESS :Educated women are more likely to participate in political discussions, meetings, and decision-making, which in turn promotes a more representative, effective government.

DECREASE DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE :Educated girls and women are less likely to be victims of domestic and sexual violence or to tolerate it in their families.

DECREASE SUPPORT FOR MILITANCY :As women become more educated, they are less likely to support militancy and terrorism than similarly educated men.

IMPROVE SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROWTH :Educated women have a greater chance of escaping poverty, leading healthier and more productive lives, and raising the standard of living for their children, families, and communities.

REASONS BEHIND NOT GETTING EDUCATION Indifference in attitudes and practices aagainst girl child including their

health and well being. Illiterate parents and guardians have little awareness of the importance of

education,particularly for girl children. Financial constrains of various types interfare in the education. Various domestic responsibilities along with the necessity to earn moneyin

low ages. No parental support Discrimination on various basis like caste religion etc. Lack of aspiration as only professional options are the traditional one’s

which don’t require education.

ESSENTIAL STEPS TO BE TAKENLow-cost and flexible timetables :

Basic education should be free or cost very little. Also, school hours should be flexible so children can help at home and still attend classes.Schools close to home : Many parents worry about girls travelling long distances on their own.Parents and community need to be fully convinced of the

importance of education and motivated to send their children,particularly their daughters to school.

Providing women with literacy and vocational training for income generation.

Community leaders and extant groups should fully and actively support this cause.

The government of India has initiated various programs and policies to ensure that a girl does not miss out any opportunity of getting education.

In the year 1964, the Education Commission was set up, which largely talked about focusing on educating the girl child.

The government has undertaken to provide this education free of cost and make it compulsory for those in that age group. This undertaking is more widely known as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

1. Mahila Samakhya Programme2. Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Scheme(KGBV)3. National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level (NPEGEL)

Only a handful of people have actually realized the importance of educating a girl.Educated girls can brighten the future of their country by the good upbringing of their children. Education gives a woman freedom of thought. It broadens her outlook and makes her aware of her duties and responsibilities.The progress of a country depends on girls’ education. So, girls’ education should be encouraged.
