IMPACTIONImpaction in dairy animals

refers to the failure of digestion, slow passage and

accumulation of feed in one or more of the stomach

compartments leading to: constipation or absence of

dung.

Page 5: Impaction

Causes

Page 6: Impaction

1) Feeds high in CHO or sugar with a lack of proteinexamples - low quality forage, corn, high energy prepared feeds, cereal grains and root crops2) Eating plastic and other foreign debris 3) Lack of water4) Hungry animals gorging on forage 5) Hair balls in fiber goats6) High amount of non PTN nitrogenous compound as urea 7)Un ripen green food

Page 7: Impaction

. Impaction is of two types. Primary impaction – it refers of accumulation of poor quality roughages in any of the fore stomach compartments. It is relatively rare condition and involves nearly all animals

Page 8: Impaction

Secondary impaction – any inflammation of gut or associated organ which decrease gut motility lead to secondary impaction.

Pathogenesis

Page 10: Impaction

Eating high fermentable CHO :

disterbance in normal micro flora and protozoa (GM+ve lactic acid bacilli )&(GM-ve celluletic )lead to increase lactic acid bactetria & dacrease celluletic bacteria

Page 11: Impaction

Increase lactic acid micro flora lead to increase lactic acid in rumen lactic acid is more absorbable than VFA so it pass to blood lead to acidosis & decrease milk production

Page 12: Impaction

HIGH LACTIC ACID IN THE RUMEVN:

1-decease Ph acidosis killing of ruminal micro flora 2- increase osmotic pressure in rumen fluid go to rumen “destended abdomen”3-acidemia duo to draw of fluid & alkaline radical from blood to rumen 4- hemo concentration & dehydration

Page 13: Impaction

5- low milk production because lactic acid is more strong than VFA6- lameness due to production of amiens as histadine & histamine when absorbed go to limps & joint

TREATMENT

Page 22: Impaction

1-evacuation of ruminal contanet“ surgical –purgative – stomach tube ”2- Na HCO3 IV 3- oral Na HCO3 & Mg hydroxide . & Mg peroxide 4- ruminal juice transplantation5- stomachic

Page 23: Impaction

6- anti histaminic to avoid lameness7- treatment of dehydration 8- vit B complex for metabolism of lactic acid9-Corticosteroids for treatment of shock

Prevention

Page 25: Impaction

1) If your forage is not high quality, make sure animals are receiving a protein supplement, protein blocks available are a good prevention

2) Don’t allow hungry animals to gorge on forage

3) Check to make sure animals have a constant water supply.

4) Keep your pens and pastures clean and free of debris especially plastic

5) avoid misdistribution & miscalculation & mismixing
