Impact Report Summer 2015 | VON Colchester East Hants The VON Adult Day Program - Bigger & Better Than Ever! If you hear laughter and giggling coming from 9 Church Street in Truro, NS on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, you know you’ve found the VON Colchester-East Hants Adult Day Program (ADP). The program has grown from a handful of clients to now “bursting at the seams” with 15 clients, as well as volunteers and staff. The ADP clients range in age from 21 to 96 years old. They arrive for the day at 9 a.m., excited to see what has been planned for them. Each day holds a variety of different activities such as morning news, baking, crafts, exercises, bingo and music. One 95 year old client says she feels “so alive” at the program. Another client, a gentleman in his 60s, says that he always has so much fun with the group and starts to get excited for the next day’s activities even before the current day is over. The ADP also provides precious respite time for caregivers. Many of the ADP clients live with their spouses or their children. For some, the ADP may be the only opportunity that the caregivers have to find time for themselves; time to catch up on errands, visit with their friends or perhaps even go home and spend the day relaxing and catching up on their sleep. The husband of one of our ADP clients with Alzheimer disease has told the staff that our program is a “lifesaver” and that it would be a struggle to keep his wife at home without our support. He uses the time to take part in some leisure activities and to rest. After their day apart, this husband and wife share a hug and a smile, and go home together both feeling refreshed. The Colchester East Hants Adult Day Program runs 5 days per week in 3 different locations. For more information about the Program, please contact Monique Natividad (902) 305-4798. Scottish Rite makes generous donation Late last summer, the Truro VON Adult Day Program (ADP) received a special gift of $500.00 from the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation. The funds were used to purchase specialty, large print books that will enable participants of the program to enjoy interesting stories and make books accessible to individuals with memory deficits. By taking turns reading the books aloud with the help of the staff, the ADP clients are more encouraged to take part in discussions and share memories. Thank you Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation for your generosity and support of VON. The VON Adult Day Program - Bigger & Better Than Ever!If you hear laughter and giggling coming from 9 Church Street in Truro, NS on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, you know you’ve found the VON Colchester-East Hants Adult Day Program (ADP).

The ADP also provides precious respite time for caregivers. Many

of the ADP clients live with their spouses or their children.

Making a Gift of Securities

Why is making a donation of securities one of the most attractive ways to support VON Canada?

When you convert your security investments to cash, the capital gain is taxable. However, if you donate these securities directly to VON Canada, you will not pay capital gains tax and you will receive a charitable tax receipt from VON Canada for the full market value on the day the securities are received.

VON Canada can accept different types of securities, including bonds, publicly listed securities and mutual fund units.

For more information call 1-888-VON-CARE x 3482

Example for an individual who donates securities vs. cash*

Mr. Williams would like to donate $10,000 to VON Canada. The securities he owns of Imperial Oil have a fair market value of $10,000 and an original cost of $100.

Mr. William’s total tax rate is 45% (22% on capital gain). He is deciding between selling the securities and donating the cash or transferring the securities directly to VON Canada.

The net tax benefit for Mr. Williams is determined as follows*

WILL POWERChanges to the Estate Administration Tax Act If you have not already done so, please speak with your lawyer or tax advisor about the changes to the Income Tax Act that will come into effect January 2016.

These changes may impact the tax benefits for your estate and its beneficiaries. Modifying the wording in your will today, could mean significant financial advantages for your beneficiaries.

While you are reviewing your will, please take the time to also consider including a gift to your favourite charity – VON.

Your legacy gift of a bequest in support of VON both humbles us and inspires us and provides much needed funding to care for people in need.

VON Milestones

VON WeekJoin us in celebrating VON Week from May 18-24, 2015.

Since 1952, one week has been set aside to recognize VON’s contribution and commitment to home and community care. Visit www.von.ca to find events taking place near you.

This is a time to celebrate the important role and contribution VON has made and continues to make in homes and communities across Canada.

For 118 years, VON has played an integral role in the community, working tirelessly to ensure that people continue to live longer and healthier lives at home.

This year, as part of VON Week, we want to thank YOU. Without the commitment, dedication, and support of each and every one of you, VON would not be the leading charitable, home and community care provider that it is today.

You make this possible. Thank you!

How Can You Help - Thinking Outside the Box

Truro Businessman’s Generosity Astounds VON Participants

Many of us donate to VON. The reason we donate is personal.

• You may want to say thank you for services received

• VON is your personal charity of choice to remember a loved one or friend

• VON is the charity of choice mentioned in a friend or loved ones’ obituary

What could “outside the box” look like?

Tim DeVouge, owner of the Simply Automotive Car Dealership in Truro and Dartmouth, has been a huge financial supporter of the VON CEH Adult Day Program (ADP) in Truro for over a year.

In February 2014, Tim realized that help was needed with the cost of transportation for those clients who use the local, accessible bus.

Tim immediately contacted the Coordinator of the Program, Monique Natividad, and made an incredible offer.

Since February 2014, Tim has subsidized the cost of transportation for our clients who use the local, accessible bus to attend the ADP.

• It could be a donation in honor of someone to celebrate a special occasion or a holiday

• It could be a donation in your will.

• It could be a gift in kind.

The possibilities are endless. The charitable work of VON Colchester-East Hants is made possible because of donors like YOU! Thank You, for your past support and for considering making a donation today.

Tim continues to expand his generosity by purchasing special meals and gifts for the ADP clients at Christmas and on Valentine’s Day.

The VON is overwhelmed by the support from Tim and his very helpful staff. Whenever he receives compliments and words of thanks from the VON, he simply states, “Oh, it was nothing”. But, it REALLY is something. Something wonderful. Something kind.

“THANK YOU, TIM DeVOUGE and Simply Automotive!”

Thank you to all of our donors and volunteers who help us have an impact every day.

They Gave It AwayIt was a sunny July afternoon when I received a call from fellow board member, Glenda Kent (pictured above with Allen Large). The excitement in her voice told me she had awesome news; Allen and Violet Large had just given her a cheque in support of our local VON.

As many are aware, this couple had recently won just over 11 million dollars in the Atlantic Lottery. Not only did they win, they were giving it away. Charities, local hospitals, and other organizations were all recipients of their generosity.

There was one stipulation of their gift to VON Colchester East Hants - the funds were to be used locally. The funds would be used to support the Adult Day Program, the Foot Care Program and Nursing Education. The funds also helped support the interior remodeling of the new VON CEH location.

In June of 2012, Allen was invited to attend the official opening ceremony. Unfortunately, Violet had passed away eleven months earlier, after losing her battle with cancer.

On the wall of the VON boardroom hangs a picture of Violet Large with a plaque beneath it that reads, Dedicated in memory of Violet Large June 2012. Each time I enter the boardroom, I glance at Violet’s picture and am reminded of this very unique and generous couple and their gift. I whisper “Thank You”.
