A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT

Peter Barber, Lancaster City Alliance Board Chair and President of Two Dudes Painting Company, and Marshall W. Snively, President Lancaster City Alliance

Message from our Board Chair and President

MARSHALL W. SNIVELY PRESIDENT

PETER BARBER CHAIR

THE PEOPLE, BUSINESSES, AND COMMUNITIES OF LANCASTER CITY ARE at the center of everything we do. Our impact in the past year is felt by the entrepreneurs we assist. It is seen in the neighborhoods where our Red Shirt Ambassadors patrol and in the City’s growing tree canopy. It is heard when we celebrate our community’s success and address its challenges.

Our work is directed by the community’s Building On Strength Economic Development plan and is in partnership with over 30 organizations to implement the plan. In the past year, a major focus has been in South Lancaster, especially on South Prince, South Queen, and Manor Streets to assist neighbors with needed home and business improvements while providing job training, placing trash receptacles, and planting trees. We also hired a neighborhood project coordinator who speaks both English and Spanish to work alongside neighbors as we implement this work.

As we enter year five of the plan’s implementation, investment is increasing not only Downtown, but throughout our communities. In addition, we continue our work with the City and partner organizations to achieve housing for all and support our entrepreneurs through the Entrepreneurship Coalition and the Cultivate Lancaster events.

This year also marks the beginning of our new strategic plan. The plan asks three important questions to guide our work through the year 2022. One, how do we fulfill our most impactful role within the community ecosystem? Two, how do we define and measure the success of our stakeholders and three, how can we economy-proof our work to ensure sustainability?

Thanks to the support of our investors and many community partners, the City continues to grow, yet we still have much to do. Please take a moment to review highlights from 2018-2019 and we look forward to working with you in the years ahead.

• We assisted over 70 prospects looking to invest or locate in the City. Since the adoption of the Building On Strength Economic Development Strategic Plan in mid-2015, the Lancaster City Alliance team has played a role in facilitating more than $300 million in real estate development recently completed or currently under construction, and in an additional $150 million that is in the planning stages as of October 2019.

• In partnership with Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County, we were awarded a $200,000 grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s BB&T Economic Growth Fund to identify and enhance residential and small commercial properties and provide construction training to achieve thriving wage jobs for residents.

• In partnership with Entrepreneurship Coalition, we hosted two Cultivate Lancaster events averaging over 200 attendees per event, to support local entrepreneurs looking to start or grow businesses in Lancaster. The Coalition also launched the new Cultivate website, cultivatelancaster.com, which consolidates all local start-up resources.

Our work 2018–2019

We leverage a broad network of engaged leaders and members of the community. Here are the results:

• We continue to partner with the City of Lancaster and the Lancaster Conservancy as the Lancaster Tree Tenders to expand the City’s urban canopy with a focus on “under-greened areas” including S. Prince and S. Queen Streets where 100 trees have been planted since 2018.

• The City has strong investor confidence, with over $766 million spent or planned in private sector led investment since mid-2015, including more than $280 million announced in the last year alone; a significant amount of which is occurring outside of the Downtown area.

• VeloCity, our annual fundraiser, brings together over 80 musicians, restaurants, bartenders, merchants, artists, salons, and volunteers to celebrate the city and raise money for the Lancaster City Alliance and the DID.

• In partnership with the City of Lancaster, nearly 200 blocks have been adopted for the City’s Adopt-A-Block litter clean-up program. In just the last year, almost 70 blocks have been newly adopted, resulting in regular litter clean up by residents and businesses on nearly 30 miles of Lancaster City streets since the program’s creation in 2016!

STRENGTHENING NEIGHBORHOODS

WE PROVIDE A FOUNDATION FOR A STRONG COMMUNITY through neighborhood development, empowering neighbors to plant trees, Adopt-A-Block, and repair façades. (Pictured)

THIS YEAR WE WERE AWARDED $200,000 from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s BB&T Economic Growth Fund Grant to perform this work.

THE FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM has nearly 40 properties in the pipeline representing more than $500,000 in investment.

A Foundation for a Strong Community

WE SERVE SEVERAL CITY NEIGHBORHOODS through our red shirt ambassadors who provide an extra set of eyes and ears for neighbors and businesses.

Thank you for your help! In the past year, Team Leader Tony Morton assisted an elderly woman calling for help whose wheelchair battery had died. He was happy to push her up the hill where she was able to recharge her battery. Safety Ambassador Matt Morrison helped a resident change a flat tire and Operations Supervisor Justin Norton contacted the fire department when he noticed a burning smell coming from a parked unattended vehicle.
