IMPACT REPORTYEAR IN REVIEW

JULY 1, 2019 - JUNE 30, 2020

I have lived at Holy Cross Village from its beginning and have watched it grow. As I walk the campus today, I can see that much of what our founder, Brother William Geenen, C.S.C. had envisioned has been accomplished. When you look at how our residents interact with each other, and especially how our staff interacts with staff, you can truly see that here at Holy Cross Village, we are living up to our Mission Statement: Hospitality, Faith-Centered, Integrity and Respect.

As the charitable arm of Holy Cross Village, the Holy Cross Village Foundation’s purpose is to generate the necessary resources to support and enrich the quality of life for our residents, current and future. As with any foundation, our strength is derived from the generosity of the donors who support us.

I have been proud to serve on the Foundation’s Board since its inception in 2008. As I assume the job of Foundation chair I am able to continue my passion to make a difference in the lives of those living under the care of the Brothers of Holy Cross and our devoted staff. Under my tenure, the Foundation Board will continue to strive to make life even more enjoyable, and home-like for all our residents, and a first-class place for our staff to work.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all our benefactors who have been ever so generous in the past.

Now that we are in our twenty-third year of operation as a Village, with some buildings dating as far back as 1966, we continue to see the need to spruce up the Campus. With the help of our generous benefactors, much has already been accomplished and we are grateful for all your help with the improvements. Last year we completed the new Brother Thomas Shaughnessy, C.S.C. Skilled Nursing & Therapy addition. We are almost finished with the renovation of Dujarié House: improving the physical spaces of Quinn Memory Care and the Long-Term Care areas. Within this publication, we will describe the projects currently in progress and our plans for the future.

We, the Board of Holy Cross Village Foundation, invite you to learn more about the Foundation and to consider joining us with your support. Come and be part of a winning team.

If you would like to have a tour of the Village, I would be delighted to do the honors.

“Now Isn’t This Delightful?”

No one, least of all our donors, could have predicted the importance the Gardens and Pathways expansion project would have on our campus. Last summer (2019), the project was well underway: excavation, trimming trees, bringing in an unbelievable amount of soil, strategically placing boulders, pouring concrete for new sidewalks, and planting trees, shrubs, and perennials. And of course, purchasing outdoor furniture so that everyone on campus can enjoy the pure wonder and beauty of Mother Nature.

With the completion of the project in the fall of 2019, Holy Cross Village hosted a Blessing for the Gardens and Pathways with the three donor families and loved ones in attendance. Even with steady rain, the group walked the entire path and stopped to bless each of the designated sites. Afterwards, everyone gathered inside Schubert Villa and families shared stories of their loved ones memorialized through this project.

Deirdre Mylod, daughter of Carol and Tom Mylod (current resident at André Place), told how her mother loved water, especially for a vacation venue. Whenever Carol was seated comfortably near water, she would place her hands in her lap, and say, “Now isn’t this delightful?” As Deirdre shared this story, all of us that knew Carol could easily imagine her face smiling beautifully. For Deirdre, her father’s gift of the Lookout, with a river view, was the perfect way to honor her mother.

A second component of the Gardens and Pathways project was to enhance the Quinn Memory Care Garden and to create a new sidewalk that brings the pathways closer to the river and into Dujarié House courtyard. For Kathie and Pat McAdams, this was an ideal way to recognize Kathie’s mother, Charlotte Sydor. Charlotte, a three-year former resident of Quinn Memory Care, loved to garden and walk outdoors. The McAdams’ gift was their generous way of expressing gratitude for the care she received at Holy Cross Village, while providing future generations of residents with the opportunity to experience the outdoors.

GARDENS & PATHWAYSDONOR PROFILES

The final component of the expansion of the Gardens and Pathways was creating the Denise and Chuck Roemer Garden, located along the west side of Schubert Villa. Denise and Chuck moved from their South Bend home with breathtaking landscaping and a gorgeous magnolia tree into André Place in 2009, and later, Chuck moved into Quinn Memory Care. The new Denise and Chuck Roemer Garden, in memory of Chuck, features a magnolia tree, and includes several areas to sit and reflect while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

The Gardens and Pathways are a beautiful way to remember former Holy Cross Village residents: Carol Mylod, Charlotte Sydor, and Chuck Roemer. Plus, it helps to enhance our community and allows our residents and their loved ones with the opportunity to experience the outdoors on a regular basis.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Holy Cross Village had to discontinue group activities and visitors as part of the extensive mitigation plan to best protect our residents. By adhering to the strict federal, state, and local mandated rules, our residents craved every opportunity to get outside. As the weather improved, the greatest enjoyment for our residents became their walks along the pathways and the opportunity to enjoy the featured gardens. Getting outdoors brought sunshine, fresh air, beautiful surroundings with the birds chirping and at times gentle breezes.

“There has been plenty of research on how the environment affects wellbeing. The ability to provide such a beautiful environment for the residents, especially during this pandemic, has only validated the positive impact the environment has on people. Thank you all who supported this endeavor.” Linda Lewis, Administrator of Schubert Villa and Dujarié House and Chief Operations Officer of Holy Cross Village.

The combined generosity of our three donors, and their desire to commemorate their loved ones with the beauty of Nature was truly Providential- a timely, incredible blessing. Our residents and families used the Gardens and Pathways as a much-needed respite from the psychological and physical challenges of the pandemic. For many years to come, this beautiful space will create memories, joy and peace for all who use it.

TOM MYLOD

DENISE ROEMER

GARDENS & PATHWAYS

When she first came to Holy Cross Village (HCV) Schubert Villa (SV), resident Dixie Kaiser was touring the facility and when she saw the chapel she commented, “I can make this my home.” Dixie, a daily Mass attendant, knew what was important in her life: practicing her faith and continuing to cherish her family relationships. Her daughter-in-law, a former provost at nearby St. Mary’s College, was actually the one who recommended HCV to Dixie. The proximity of HCV to the College and HCV’s excellent reputation were the main deciding factors for Dixie to select HCV as her new home.

Eleven years ago, Dixie left her home of 50 years and moved into SV, HCV’s Assisted Living area. The transition could have been difficult, but Chuck Krcmaric, one of SV’s first residents, helped ease the transition for Dixie. She fondly remembers meeting him in the Dining Room, and their decade-plus friendship has grown and expanded to include their respective children.

Earlier this year, Dixie had an unfortunate fall that required a hospital stay and the need for subsequent therapy. HCV had just finished its new addition, the Brother Thomas Shaughnessy, C.S.C. Skilled Nursing & Therapy Center (Therapy Center), which is conveniently located at the other end of the building housing SV. Prior to her fall, Dixie and Chuck spent their days together, and with her fall, their routine abruptly changed. HCV staff understands that part of the healing process includes socializing with loved ones. The HCV staff worked hard to make sure that Chuck and Dixie could be together as much as possible during her three and a half week stay for therapy. The Nursing staff assisted Chuck in getting over to see Dixie for daily breakfast in the newly constructed Therapy Center Dining Room.

One of Chuck’s sons commented on “how supportive nursing and dining staff had been for his father in the wake of Dixie’s fall.” He went on to mention the strong sense of “community” that exists at HCV. For instance, the SV Dining staff made sure Chuck was eating right when his world was turned upside down with worry for Dixie. A fellow HCV resident would also stop by Chuck’s apartment to inquire about Dixie and to bring Chuck his favorite candy. Plus, HCV chaplain, Fr. Ken Grabner, made numerous visits to Chuck.

WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED & WHERE WE’RE GOING

DIXIE’S HOME

9

Dixie’s daughter, Katie Parsons, was in town for the first couple of weeks of Dixie’s therapy and was “thrilled with all the care” Dixie received. In addition to great therapy and nursing care, the physical environment of the new Therapy Center played an important role in Dixie’s recovery. First, Dixie did not have to worry about sharing a room because all the large patient rooms are private. The Therapy gym, the outdoor garden, and covered patio was the serene setting Dixie needed for her to focus on healing and getting back to her SV apartment.

Knowing that the physical environment plays a role in the mental, physical, and emotional health of our residents, HCV is committed to the revitalization of our entire campus. Unfortunately, the coronavirus has caused us to momentarily pause on moving forward with our next phase, the SV Renovations. When it is deemed safe, HCV leaders will continue to meet with SV residents, their loved ones, and SV staff to understand what they feel is needed to enhance SV. This will also help determine the scope and budget for the project. Our goal is to renovate the common areas of SV to improve function and aesthetics, resulting in an environment that is complementary to the new Therapy Center.

HCV is grateful for the many donors who contributed to our Phase I Dujarié House improvements, and to those who have contributed for the future renovations of SV. The HCV Foundation will continue to meet with potential donors to raise the necessary funds for this project. The Foundation’s goal is to raise 100 percent of funds needed.

If you would like to learn more about Phase II – SV Renovations and how you can support the project, please contact Barb Cassady.

DIXIE’S HOME

CHUCK & DIXIE

When Linnea Vacca moved into the second floor of Schubert Villa, she wondered how she would get down to the first floor in the event of an emergency. Since Linnea uses a walker, she knew she would not be able to easily negotiate the stairs. Thankfully, this is no longer a concern.

Last winter, several anonymous donors came together to ensure that residents throughout Holy Cross Village (HCV) would not have to worry about negotiating stairs. The donors were aware HCV management had been grappling with this problem on several fronts including efficacy, scope and financial feasibility. During a Village Board dialogue on the issue, a Brothers of Holy Cross Board member suggested the stair lift at Columba Hall be evaluated against HCV’s criteria. A test run by management and several residents hit the mark. The solution was battery-operated, motorized chairs that safely move people from one floor to another.

Once the anonymous friends of Holy Cross Village became aware of the solution, they decided to fully fund the endeavor, stating, “From our experience having family members there, we knew this was an area that needed improvement to match what otherwise existed at HCV in the way of safety, quality, convenience and mission.”

The Stair Lift project includes a total of six lift systems: two each in André Place, Riverside Place, and Schubert Villa. With the installation, HCV is able to ensure both safety and convenience for residents throughout the campus. Now, all current and future residents can have peace of mind knowing they have the capability to get to or from their apartments should there be an issue with an elevator, a fire, or some other emergency.

“I had practical concerns. I was very glad to see the new unit get installed. I was among the first to ride in the chair as staff were being trained. It gave me the opportunity to try it out” said HCV Schubert Villa resident Linnea Vacca.

Thank you to these anonymous donors of HCV Foundation. Their very generous financial support enabled HCV to quickly address this critical safety concern. It has truly enhanced the lives of our residents by greatly reducing the anxiety of many of our residents.

Everyone at Holy Cross Village is very grateful to Brother Robert Lavelle, C.S.C. who has served on the HCV Foundation Board for 12 years, most of

those as chair. We could not have grown without his wisdom and commitment to the Holy Cross

Village mission. While Brother Robert steps down as chair, we are grateful that he remains on our board of directors. His leadership will continue

to guide the development of the foundation and, indeed, the village itself.

In 2012, Susan and Jack Fuhrer came to terms that their single-family house was no longer the best living option for them. Eighteen years ago, Susan had a massive stroke and as time progressed, they both realized that everyday activities, like preparing meals, had turned into a burden. Staying in their home, just made it impossible for them to socialize with their friends and to truly live.

Moving into André Place at Holy Cross Village (HCV) has enabled both Susan and Jack to get back to living. They have made friends and are able to participate in the wide variety of activities offered. Jack commented, “André Place has been the “one-stop shopping” that we needed. The wonderful dining room, well-equipped gym, the convenient beauty salon, and the various events in Geenen Hall, enabled Susan to participate in all the activities that she had done pre-stroke. Being a resident at Holy Cross Village has truly made life easier.”

As a way to express their gratitude to HCV and all of the staff, the Fuhrers became charter members of The Saint Brother André Bessette Society, the HCV Foundation’s Planned Giving Society. “Susan and I chose to make a bequest to the HCV Foundation in our family trust because we wanted to pay it forward. We wanted to give the HCV Foundation the funds to continue making gifts to HCV that make it a best place to live, instead of just a good place to live” explained Jack.

PAYING IT FORWARD

13

Only in its second year, the HCV Foundation is thrilled that many residents share the Fuhrers sentiment towards the Village and have also joined The Saint Brother André Bessette Society. Society members are donors who have notified the HCV Foundation that they have made a planned legacy gift to the HCV Foundation. These legacy gifts can include Resident Refundable Deposits, Refundable Garage Deposits, bequests in wills or trusts, and IRA disbursements, to name just a few examples.

“The Foundation provides funding for things (capital improvements) for HCV that neither fit in, nor belong in the budget from funds from our monthly rent. The extras that the Foundation funds have given to HCV make this the “best” place to live instead of just a good place” Jack further explained.

If you would like to learn more about making a legacy gift to the HCV Foundation and how you can be like Susan and Jack Fuhrer and “pay it

forward,” please contact Barb Cassady, Director of Development.
