On the 14th March, the school took a group of 25 year 7s and 8s to the big bang science and engineering fair at the Excel Centre in London. It is the largest celebration of science, technology and engineering for young people in the UK. It has lots of fun things to do to get

more young people enthusiastic about science, technology and engi-neering . It shows the young people that there are many exciting and rewarding opportunities if you have the right qualifications. The fair is designed to get more young people interested in science and engineering. The event is sponsored by many companies and universities; each with their own stall demonstrating some of their machinery and products. There were also many stalls run by school pupils, showcasing their work and research on their chosen subject for the annual competition. There were lots of

demonstrations to watch and a variety of things to do and get involved with. One of the most interesting stalls was the Nestlé stall; demonstrating how engineering and technology is used in the packing and dis-tribution of Kit Kats. Another good stall was the food and drink stall, which showed that science is even in a variety of foods. I was sur-

prised at just how many different aspects of our lives are related to sci-ence and engineering. From healthcare, food, travel and many more, it’s shocking. The stalls were very interesting and showed science in a new, fun way. Instead of science being a boring lesson, that goes on and on in a dreary classroom, it become a fun filled day that you didn't want to end. It was also in the Excel, which was a bright, colourful space. The trip was great fun and enjoyable, I would happily go to the fair again, because there was so much to see and do-even David Cameron showed up! By Zach

Children 'should be allowed to learn

from their own mistakes’

According to the Christian, Chairman of the Boarding School

Association ‘Children should be encouraged to take risks and

make their own mistakes while they are still young enough to

learn from them.’

He has suggested ways of making this possible. These ideas in-

clude; playing poker, go-karting in car parks, and climbing

trees, in which many children have experienced already.

‘Less tests, more childhood. 'Christian stresses, although

many teachers might disagree. Tests are thought to prepare chil-

dren for GCSEs in Year 11, and also to prepare them for being

under pressure later on in life. Even though this argument is

strong, there are other people who would agree with the argu-

ment beyond doubt. I certainly do! I think that any child

should learn, and the best way of doing so, is through their own

mistakes.

By Sophie.

But what do you think? Should chil-

dren have more free experiences?

Animal Cruelty Cases

The RSPCA show that the number of convictions for animal ne-glect and cruelty rose by over a third last year. RSPCA inspectors investigated more than 150,000 suspected cruelty cases in 2012 and they say more animals in need than ever before, have been

helped. Rescue cases included rabbits, guinea pigs, ponies, dogs, cats and chickens saved from a flooded barn. The charity believes more needs to be done to protect animals. Chief executive Gavin Grant said, “Our inspectors investigated 150,833 suspected cru-elty cases and issued 78,090 advice notices last year - these are

extremely effective in improving the care of animals. However if there is evidence of a crime and serious animal abuse then we will take legal action to protect the animals and prevent further

abuse. We also want to see judges taking these offences far more seriously for animals.’’

This isn’t fair on animals-they should be protected! So if you have a pet never let him/her leave and live on the streets. Protect your pets. Don’t make the wrong choice, by abandoning your pet

on the street and making the numbers bigger.

They came here a few years ago and the Year Sevens who saw them then are now in year nine but I am one hundred percent sure they still remember the day they saw the Sunnyside dancing group. They inspired the students to try out for the wonderful workshop, which five pupils from each form could participate. The lucky five boys and girls missed the whole of first period. (which I am sure they were happy about!) Two of the girls in my form said that it was, “So much fun I want to do it again!” The rest of the form were simply beside themselves with jealousy as the two girls strolled back into class. From what I have been told the workshop (not to be missed!) was the opportunity of the year. The dancing was not funny or to be laughed at but we did laugh when the tallest dancer hit his finger on the stick! The Morris dancers were a group of eight men who knew all the dances back to front and off by heart, they were all ages but did not show it as they all had as much energy as the younger ones. They had their own mascot –which was a really big but cute badger who strolled around the great hall in his funky costume! A great event, so thank you Mr Hales for organising it!!

This half-term Hall Mead school witnessed the splendour of a modern Morris dancing group as they told the story of where it originates from and how it started. They demonstrated many dances with par-ticular names and even had to use sticks! The Morris dancing group had their own music player who was skilfully playing a mini-flute and a small drum band, tapping it to the flute simultane-ously.

To end the season, our Year 7 and 8 boys and girls had a table tennis tour-nament to compete for the Havering cup. Our girls brought success to Hall

Mead winning the cup and becoming champions in Havering! Well Done girls!!! What a great way to end the season.

Summer is fast approaching and with it are coming the summer sports! Athletics club runs every lunch time out on the field and is the perfect place for any aspiring athlete to begin training. As well as this, lots of trials for school teams and house competitions are taking place, with Year Ten sports captains being an-nounced in the coming weeks. David Walliams is a judge on Britain's Got Talent . He swam the Eng-lish channel and is married to Lara Stone, who is a Dutch model. He also has a baby on the way which is due later this year.

Billionaire Boy written by David Walliams, is a classic book that would make you laugh until you fall off of your seat with tears of laughter. Billionaire Boy is about a young boy who’s father makes toilet paper and gets a lot of money for it, but will they stay rich forever? You can buy this book or borrow from the library. I’ve given it:

You might have read all the other ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ but this the newest of them all. It has all our favourite characters but our ‘wimpy kids’ is growing up on new adventures of his

own! A hilarious, must read book! The all star book Diary of Wimpy Kid knocks you out your seat. Full of nothing but comedy and even if you’re not a keen reader– you’ll love this book– seriously! I read it, I loved it and now I'm recommending it! My rating: 10/10. Reviews by Daisy

8.1 The game play is fun, although the graphics are not that good. It doesn’t really ruin the game play and fun of the game. You can play it with your friends or family and it’s a fun party game.

The games are very fun and are aimed at people of all ages, but you always have to be very close to the Kinect, so it ruins the game a bit,. However when it works. the games are actually pretty fun and en-joyable.

There is not really a storyline but you can unlock some different features, which are good, but not really that excit-ing.

The only reason why this is an eight is because of the way the action is filmed; it does seem unique in most parts and get pulses racing.

The film’s action is superb especially the scene where Bruce Willis and son jump through a window to avoid gunfire from a helicopter. Although very over the top, it’s enjoyable.

Overall 9

As you can tell from the photos Bruce has not forgotten how to handle a firearm and although not as iconic as earlier in-stalments, it’s a very enjoyable 90 minute ride.

Facade is a game where you play as a person who is trying to help a couple (Grace and Trip) with their marriage. You can choose you name at the start of the game and the characters will talk to you. If you play the game right, you will help them and they will like you. If you mess up, you will get thrown out of their house because they got annoyed with you (which can be funny at times).

Gameplay: 8/10 The game play is very clever; you have to actu-ally talk to the characters by typing in what you want to say. You can pick up items and interact with stuff in their house. There are many items which you can interact with such as a painting where Trip asks you what a painting of a land-scape makes you think of. The answer is, ro-mance!

Extra stuff: N/A The whole game is just the storyline and you can’t do much else except mess around and annoy Trip and Grace.

Storyline: 4/10

There are many storylines, one for each character. The characters are: Kratos, Nathan Drake, Fat Princess, Radec, Sackboy, Rachet, Jak, Parappa, Sly Cooper, Sweet tooth, Spike, Cole, Evil Cole, Big Daddy, Dante, and many more. Although there are storylines for every character, they are not very good storylines. All the same really.

Game play: 7/10

The gameplay is good, but not very original. It is a 2-D fighting game where you play against your friends, computer-controlled opponents or other people online. Most of the characters you can play as are exclusive to Playstation like Parapper the rapper, Sackboy and Rachet and Clank. This is a good game, but I think it’s too much like Su-per Smash Bros.

Extra stuff: 7/10

There are quite a lot of extras, you can play online against other people and rank your charac-ters up. You can customize your profile and each character and you can unlock items to show off to your friends.

There are so many retro and old games that should still be played and enjoyed. Some are very fun and some people might say are better than the new games! Here are some examples: The old versions of Street-Fighter are somewhat the best and they should still be played. The old Sonic games are really good and the new versions are very different and most would say the old ones are the best. The old game series of puzzle-plat former games called Oddworld are really fun and I don't know why people just forget about these games!!!!! So get rid of your Fifa 13, dust off the old games and give them a go...sometimes the oldies tend to be the best!!

GO ON....DIG IN TO THE PAST!!
