Who Came & Where Did They Settle?

• Similar immigrant waves on both sides of the river: German, Irish & English dominated on eastside.

• On the west banks of the river, immigrants were involved in mercantile; on the east they primarily farmed.

• On the east side and throughout S. Illinois, immigrants filled in areas previously settled or bypassed by American pioneers.

Why are Immigrants Coming to

Southern Illinois Today?Truth is, not many are coming at all – at

least permanently. Those that do come, fall into several categories:

• Foreign students at colleges & universities

• Military affiliated with Scott AFB

• Migrant farm workers

Where & How Does the International Institute Fit?

We were founded in 1919 and have been serving immigrants in Metro East since our first year of service.

Pictured here are Mexicans who worked in the Illinois Stockyards & lived in freight cars. Our volunteers would spend a day a week traveling to conduct English classes with this “floating student body.”

Festival of Nations

Held in Tower Grove Park on St. Louis’ Southside, the festival annually draws 150,000 visitors from more than 100 zip codes. In 2012, our exit surveys revealed that the event drew _____visitors from the Metro East.
