Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd.

A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” [John 10: 11]

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the liturgy of the 4th Sunday of Easter is also known as the Good Shepherd Sunday. This theme obviously comes from the gospel reading that

we find in all the three-year cycle in our liturgical calendar. All of them talks about Jesus

as the Good Shepherd who lays his own life for his sheep. He did this by subjecting himself to human suffering and pain, then, by dying on the cross for us his shepherds. Jesus the Good Shepherd had done this ultimate sacrifice, laying his life for us that we may live.

It is interesting to note that the 4th Sunday of Easter is also dedicated by the church as Universal Day of Prayer for Vocations. In the message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the 2021 World Day of Vocations issued on April 25, 2021, he emphasizes the role of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary, in the life of the church in her search for vocation in life for each individual believer and vocation to the priesthood and religious life in

particular. Pope Francis wrote his Apostolic Letter ‘Patris Corde’ declaring a special Year of St. Joseph (December 8, 2020 – December 8, 2021) to increase our love and devotion to this extraordinary saint. Pope Francis reflects on the simplicity and uniqueness of St. Joseph: “He did not even

say a single word in the gospels, and yet, he accomplished something extraordinary in the eyes of God. In Saint Joseph, God recognized the heart of a father, able to give and generate life in the midst of daily routines. Vocations have this same goal: to beget and renew lives every day. The Lord desires to shape the hearts of fathers and mothers: hearts that are open, capable of great initiatives, generous in self-giving, compassionate in comforting anxieties and steadfast in strengthening hopes. The priesthood and the

consecrated life greatly need these qualities nowadays, in times marked by fragility but also by the sufferings due to the pandemic, which has spawned uncertainties and fears about the future and the very meaning of life. Saint Joseph comes to meet us in his gentle way, as one of “the saints next door”. At the same time, his strong witness can guide us on the journey.” [Pope’s Message: Universal Day of Prayer for Vocations] The month of April is also a special time for us here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Let us not forget that the church has already done incredible steps in her efforts to safeguard the children entrusted to her care. Let us pray also for our beloved children as we also pray for vocations this weekend. Vocations to the priesthood and religious life is possible only when our young people are protected from the evils of violence and sexual abuse. May the Risen Christ help us in this endeavor to ensure that our children are safe and free to be like children.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, la liturgia del IV Domingo de Pascua también se conoce como el Domingo del Buen Pastor. Este tema, obviamente, proviene de la lectura del evangelio que encontramos en todo el ciclo de tres años en nuestro calendario litúrgico.

Todos ellos hablan de Jesús como el Buen Pastor que da la vida por sus ovejas. Lo hizo sometiéndose al sufrimiento y al dolor humanos, luego, muriendo en la cruz por nosotros, sus ovejas. Jesús el Buen Pastor había hecho este sacrificio supremo, dando su vida por

nosotros para que podamos vivir. Es interesante notar que el Cuarto Domingo de Pascua también es dedicado por la iglesia como Día Universal de Oración por las Vocaciones. En el mensaje de Su Santidad el Papa

Francisco para la Jornada Mundial de las Vocaciones 2021 emitido el 25 de abril de 2021, enfatiza el papel de San José, el esposo de María, en la vida de la Iglesia en su búsqueda de vocación en la vida para cada creyente y vocación al sacerdocio y la vida religiosa en

particular. El Papa Francisco escribió su Carta Apostólica "Patris Corde" declarando un Año especial de San José (8 de diciembre de 2020 - 8 de diciembre de 2021) para aumentar nuestro amor y devoción por este santo extraordinario.

El Papa Francisco reflexiona sobre la sencillez y singularidad de San José: “Ni siquiera dijo una sola palabra en los evangelios y, sin embargo, logró algo extraordinario a los ojos de Dios.

En San José, Dios reconoció el corazón de un padre, capaz de dar y generar vida en medio de las rutinas diarias. Las vocaciones tienen este mismo objetivo: engendrar y renovar vidas todos los días. El Señor desea moldear el corazón de los padres y madres: corazones abiertos, capaces de grandes iniciativas, generosos en la entrega, compasivos en consolar ansiedades

y firmes en fortalecer esperanzas. El sacerdocio y la vida consagrada necesitan mucho de estas cualidades hoy en día, en tiempos marcados por la fragilidad, pero también por los sufrimientos debidos a la pandemia, que ha engendrado incertidumbres y temores sobre el

futuro y el sentido mismo de la vida. San José viene a nuestro encuentro a su manera dulce, como uno de los “santos de al lado”. Al mismo tiempo, su fuerte testimonio puede guiarnos en el camino”. [Mensaje del Papa: Jornada Universal de Oración por las Vocaciones] El mes de abril también es un momento especial para nosotros aquí en la Arquidiócesis de

Los Ángeles. No olvidemos que la iglesia ha dado pasos increíbles ya en sus esfuerzos por salvaguardar a los niños confiados a su cuidado. Recemos también por nuestros queridos hijos como también rezamos por las vocaciones este fin de semana. Las vocaciones al sacerdocio y la vida religiosa solo son posibles cuando nuestros jóvenes están protegidos de

los males de la violencia y el abuso sexual. Que Cristo Resucitado nos ayude en este esfuerzo por asegurar que nuestros hijos estén seguros y libres para ser como niños.

Jesus wants us to understand that he loves us and can save us. In the

Gospel he wants to explain it to us with the image of “the good shepherd”. Not a salaried shepherd who gives the bare minimum, but a shepherd who

is willing to give his life for his sheep. "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. There is no other shepherd who

can value a sheep's life over his own.

Jesus tells us: I know my sheep. And Jesus' sheep, they know Jesus. And

above all this: How is it possible to know Jesus and belong to his flock?

Having as the foundation of our lives a very important principle: no other

can save us. No one, only Jesus of Nazareth. If we accept this, there is no reason to look anywhere else, Jesus becomes our “cornerstone”. Jesus is

the foundation of our lives, our foundation, our strength. So we build our

life in reference to and sustained by Jesus as our "cornerstone." And we can say that we become his sheep. Because we trust and let ourselves be

guided by Jesus. This is how we can recognize the voice of our pastor; we

live our lives in constant reference and sustained by him.

Just as we can recognize a well-built structure, we can also recognize the "good shepherd" sheep. We are children of God and when we recognize

Jesus as our savior, we also recognize our nature as children of God.

And we acknowledge others who have Jesus as their shepherd and cornerstone.

But as Juan says: "it has not yet been revealed what we will be like in the

end." We recognize that "no one else can save us" but if by "Jesus of

Nazareth", we will try to work with understanding and opening our hearts to be prepared as to how salvation will really manifest itself in us. We are

surely surprised when Saint John tells us, speaking of Jesus, that "we will

see him as he is." What will be surprising for us is to discover that, “when he appears, we will be like him” and there, at that moment, we will realize

why only Jesus of Nazareth can save us.

Jesús quiere que entendamos que él nos quiere y puede salvarnos. En el evangelio quiere explicárnoslo con la imagen de “el buen pastor”. No un pastor asalariado que da lo mínimo requerido, sino un pastor que está dispuesto a dar la vida por sus ovejas. “Yo soy el buen pastor. El buen pastor da la vida por sus ovejas. No hay ningún otro pastor capaz de valorar la vida de una oveja sobre la suya. Jesús nos dice: Yo conozco a mis ovejas. Y las ovejas de Jesús, conocen a Jesús. Y ante todo esto: ¿Cómo es posible conocer a Jesús y pertenecer a su rebaño? Teniendo como fundamento de nuestras vidas un principio bien importante: ninguno otro puede salvarnos. Nadie, solo Jesús de Nazaret. Si aceptamos esto, no hay por qué buscar en ningún otro sitio, Jesús se vuelve nuestra “piedra angular”. Jesús es la base de nuestras vidas, nuestro cimiento, nuestra fortaleza. Entonces construimos nuestra vida en referencia y sostenidos por Jesús como nuestra “piedra angular”. Y podemos decir que nos volvemos sus ovejas. Porque confiamos y nos dejamos guiar por Jesús. Así es cómo podemos reconocer la voz de nuestro pastor; vivimos nuestras vidas en constante referencia y sostenidos por él. Así como podemos reconocer una estructura bien construida, también podemos reconocer las ovejas de el “buen pastor”. Somos hijos de Dios y cuando reconocemos a Jesús como nuestro salvador, reconocemos también nuestra naturaleza como hijos de Dios. Y reconocemos a otros quienes tienen a Jesús como su pastor y piedra angular.

Pero como dice Juan: “aún no se ha manifestado cómo seremos al fin.” Reconocemos que “ninguno otro puede salvarnos” pero si por “Jesús de Nazaret”, trataremos de trabajar con entendimiento y abriendo nuestro corazón para estar preparados en como realmente la salvación se manifestará en nosotros. De seguro nos sorprendemos cuando San Juan nos dice hablándonos de Jesús que “lo veremos tal cual es.” Lo que va a ser sorprendente para nosotros es descubrir que, “cuando él se manifieste, vamos a ser semejantes a él” y allí, en ese momento, nos daremos cuenta de porque sólo Jesús de Nazaret puede salvarnos.

Following the current orders from Governor Newsom and the directives from the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles, effective immediately, churches are allowed to do

worships services when it is done outdoors. In view of this, we are going to set up our Sunday masses outdoors in our church parking lot.

For social distancing reasons, we do have the 6 feet requirement.

In order for you to attend, YOU WILL NEED TO CALL & RESERVE.

Please call the parish office at 323.660.0034. If the line is busy, please call again. Reservations will be taken the week BEFORE the Mass itself.

Confirmation number will be required for all attendees. Limited capacity.
