On Thursday, November 6, beginning at 5:15 P.M., all parents of Grade 1 students are invited to aDend a home reading informaEon session. The session will be organized by Mrs. Zulyniak (Grade 1 Teacher). The session will last approximately 45 minutes. It is intended to inform parents on how the Grade 1 Home Reading Program works. InformaEon will also be presented on helpful Eps for reading at home with your child. All Grade 1 students and their parents are encouraged to aDend. The informaEon session will take place in the IHMS Gymnasium. Term 1, Progress Reports Report Cards are being sent home Friday, November 21. The Progress Reports provide informaEon regarding a student’s academic achievement, aDendance and social development. The Progress Report should be signed in the appropriate place and returned (in the envelope provided) at the Eme of the Parent / Teacher Conference. Parent / Teacher Conferences The Parent/Teacher Conference is an opportunity for teachers and parents to engage in conversaEon about the student’s progress. Teachers, parents and students will share ways they can work together to support the achievement of the agreed upon goals for improvement. Parent / teacher conferences are scheduled for the week of November 2427. Appointments can be made with teachers before, or aYer classes, up to 5:00 P.M.. On Thursday, November 27 appointments can be during the day (there are no classes) and into the evening unEl 8:00 P.M.. During the conference parents will meet individually with their child’s teacher(s) to: 1) review achievement relaEve to grade level standards, 2) set goals for the next term, 3) idenEfy ways to support the student at home and at school. Parent Teacher Conference Forms will be sent home on November 14 for parents to request a conference Eme. If more Eme is required with the teacher at the end of the conference, parents should request the teacher to schedule an addiEonal appointment. To respect everyone’s Eme, it’s important to honour the schedule. Please take advantage of this opportunity to get to know your child’s teacher and to strengthen the home / school partnership. On November 10 th , the students of IHMS will gather together to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. At 10:00 A.M., there will be a Remembrance Day ceremony in the gym. Parents are invited to a1end. Poppies will be available for the students at the school. A $2 contribuEon is encouraged to the poppy box before November 10. This year IHMS will have a guest speaker from the Royal Canadian Airforce. Lt. Colonel Aaron SpoD is a disEnguished officer who works with an engineering unit at 17 Wing Airbase in Winnipeg. Lt. Colonel SpoD has served overseas in many tours of duty and will be talking with the students about why Remembrance Day is important, and what it means to him. He currently volunteers with The Memory Project and visits schools across Manitoba talking about Remembrance Day, as well as, the Canadian Armed Forces. IHMS Baby Si1ers Course Thank you to all the students that registered for the IHMS Baby SiDers Course. The Baby SiDers Course was on Friday, October 24. All 20 parEcipants passed with flying colours!! Thank you to Mrs. Cathy Jacobson (parent volunteer) for instrucEng the course. Pylypivka or St. Philip's Fast Ukrainian Catholics refer to the preChristmas fast period as Pylypivka or St. Philip's Fast, as it always begins on the feast of St. Philip the Apostle, November 15. Pylypivka is a Eme of preparaEon before Christmas. The Church offers this Eme to remind us of the great celebraEon of God’s love that we will soon be observing as we again focus on His birth among us. Parents, family and friends are invited to join us as we bring focus to this special Eme of year with a Prayer Services on Friday, November 21 at 9:00 A.M. in the school gymnasium. More informaEon on the theme that is being developed for Pylypivka will be sent home in midNovember. Fund-raising info: Fund  Raising  Raffle  -­‐  Wednesday,  November  26  As  indicated  in  the  Fund  Raising  secEon  of  the  Immaculate  Heart  of  Mary  School  Handbook  ...  one  of  the  fund  raising  events  for  this  school  year  is  the  2014  Fund  Raising  Raffle.  The  Fund  Raising  Dinner  and  Fund  Raising  Raffle  are  two  separate  events.  The  Raffle  will  be  held  on  Wednesday,  November  26  in  the  IHMS  Gymnasium,  and  the  Dinner  on  Saturday,  March  14  at  Holy  Eucharist  Parish  Centre.  Each  volunteer  family  is  allocated  2  Raffle  Tickets  to  sell,  valued  at  $50.00  each.  Tickets  were  distributed  to  IHMS  families  on  October  8.    The  =cket  stubs  and  money  are  due  back  in  the  school  office  on  Wednesday,  November  12.  

Annual  School  Tea  -­‐  Sunday,  February  2  It’s  never  too  early  to  start  preparing  for  the  Annual  School  Tea.  It  will  be  held  on  Sunday,  February  1,  2015.  Anyone  that  would  like  to  make  a  contribuEon  to  the  main  or  side  raffles  are  encouraged  to  do  so.  Your  donaEon  can  be  leY  at  the  school  office.

Hot  Lunch  Days  Look  for  the  hot  lunch  days  on  the  monthly  calendar.  “Pizza  Days”  are  organized  by  the  Grade  8  class  with  proceeds  going  towards  their  graduaEon.  Hot  Dog  /  SubWay  /  Perogy  Days  are  organized  by  the  Parents’  Guild  with  revenues  earmarked  for  busing  transportaEon  on  field  trips.  Look  for  the  ‘Order  Day’  (preceding  the  actual  hot  lunch  day)  on  the  monthly  calendar.  On  the  ‘order  day’  money  can  be  sent  to  school  with  your  child  to  give  to  their  homeroom  teacher.    For  pizza  days  students  have  the  opEon  of  ordering  cheese  or  pepperoni  pizza.    Orders  are  accepted  up  un=l  12:00  noon  on  the  Order  Day.    Sorry  ....  late  orders  cannot  be  accepted.  If  by  chance  you  miss  a  hot  lunch  ‘Order  Day’,  just  wait  for  the  next  one  ...  there  are  many  of  them  throughout  the  year.    If  a  student  is  absent  on  a  Pizza  Day  their  pizza  order  will  be  held  for  them  when  they  return  the  next  day.  

Show  &  Save  Thank  you  to  all  the  families  who  helped  make  the  Show  and  Save  Fundraiser  such  an  overwhelming  success.  There  400  books  sold,  raising  $4,000.00  for  the  Grade  8  GraduaEon!    The  Graduates  of  2015  are  very  grateful.    GraEtude  is  extended  to  Mrs.  Naurocki  for  organizing  the  Show  &  Save  Fund  raiser,  and  as  well  to  Mrs.  Dudych  for  processing  all  the  orders  in  the  office.  

Koubassa  &  Cheese  for  Sale  The  IHMS  Parents’  Guild  will  be  selling  rings  of  koubassa  and  New  Bothwell  Cheese  during  the  month  of  November.    Order  forms  will  be  sent  home  near  the  beginning  of  November.    Orders  will  be  due  near  the  end  of  November  (dates  to  be  confirmed).  The  fresh  koubassa  and  cheese  orders  will  be  distributed  in  mid  December  …  just  in  Eme  for  the  Christmas  season!    Don’t  forget  to  take  an  order  form  to  work  and  sell  these  delicious  food  items  to  your  colleagues!

BASKET RAFFLES for ANNUAL TEA & FUNDRAISING DINNER

The Basket Raffle Committees are planning and gathering prizes for two of IHMS’s most successful fundraisers:

• the School Tea on February, 1, 2015 • the Fundraising Dinner on March 14, 2015

It is because of your valued support each year that we are able to put together some very impressive baskets!

OUR GOAL THIS YEAR IS TO RECEIVE A PRIZE ITEM FROM EACH AND EVERY FAMILY AT IHMS TO MAKE OUR BASKETS BETTER THEN EVER!!!

Remember….no item is too big or too small. We are looking for new items for men, women, children and teens. We also accept coupons, gift certificates, and cash.

You can make a personal family donation, or if you work for a business that is able to donate, we can provide you with a letter. These letters will be available in the school office later this month.

Please tag items with your family name and clearly label them as BASKET RAFFLE. They can be left at the school office anytime now.

N.U.T.  Day  !  ...  Colour  Day!!    -­‐  November  19  Wednesday,  November  19  will  be  a  N.U.T.Day  ...  No  Uniforms  Today!    The  dress  up  theme  the  Student  Council  has  decided  on  is  ‘colour  day’!!    Each  class  will  dress  from  head  to  toe  in  the  class  color  listed  below!!    The  school  will  look  like  a  rainbow!!

November  17-­‐  Assessment  Day      Teachers  will  be  collaEng  assessment  data  and  preparing  first  term  Progress  Reports  for  each  of  the  students.  

November  27  -­‐  Parent  /  Teacher  Conferences  Teachers  set  the  full  day  aside  to  meet  with  parents  regarding  their  child’s  progress.  

November  28  -­‐  Professional  Development  Day    Teachers  from  private  schools  across  Manitoba  will  be  aDending  workshops.  

Christmas  Break  The  last  day  of  classes  for  Sadochok  prior  to  the  Christmas  Break  is  Thursday,  December  11.    Last  day  of  classes  for  Grades  K-­‐8  is  Friday,  December  19.                                                                              Classes  resume  on  Monday,  January  5,  2015.  

IHMS  Parents’  Guild  Mee=ng  All  parents/guardians  who  have  children  aDending  Immaculate  Heart  are  members  of  the  IHMS  Parents’  Guild  and  you  are  invited  to  the  monthly  meeEngs.  The  Guild  has  a  vital  role  in  our  school  community  and  we  need  you  to  become  a  part  of  this  process.  InformaEon  regarding  school  events  and  acEviEes  is  shared,  as  well  as,  updates  on  the  school  relocaEon  project.  The  next  mee=ng  of  the  Parents’  Guild  will  be  on  Monday,  November  3  at  7:00  P.M..  A  child  care  service  is  provided  free  of  charge  for  parents  that  will  be  bringing  their  children.

Selec=ng  a  High  School  for  Your  Child??  The  IHMS  Parents’  Guild  will  be  meeEng  in  January  is  on  Thursday,  January  8,  2015.    At  the  beginning  of  the  meeEng  Mr.  Picklyk  will  make  a  presentaEon  on  the  

process  of  selecEng  a  high  school.    This  informaEon  will  be  of  high  relevance,  especially  for  families  with  

children  in  grades  7  &  8.    What  are  the  opEons  for  selecEng  a  high  school?    What  is  involved  with  filling  out  an  

applicaEon?    What  are  the  admission  requirements?    What  are  the  tuiEon  fees?    All  of  these  quesEons  will  be  

answered  during  the  presentaEon.    A  child  care  service  is  provided  for  those  families  that  wish  to  aDend  the  meeEng  

and  are  bringing  their  children.

Catholic High School Selection

Students  Making  A  Change  …  S.M.A.C!!  Immaculate  Heart  of  Mary  School  has  a  

new  club  dedicated  to  promoEng  social  jusEce  and  helping  the  world  become  a  beDer  place.  Under  the  guidance  of  Mrs.  Kathy  Walkow  and  Mr.  Michael  Banias,  Students  Making  A  Change,  or  “S.M.A.C.”,  will  be  running  mulEple  social  jusEce  awareness  campaigns  and  fundraising  events  to  help  local  and  global  social  causes.  

The  S.M.A.C.  team  is  different  than  other  school  clubs.  The  students  themselves  are  in  charge.  Allowing  the  students  to  be  in  control  gives  them  the  opportunity  to  learn  about  responsibility  in  a  very  hands-­‐on  way  as  well  as  be  leaders  in  the  school  community.    

While  the  club  was  and  is  open  to  anyone  in  grade  7  and  8,  a  strong  and  commiDed  group  of  22  students  joined  in  late  September.  S.M.A.C.  has  already  done  some  research  into  potenEal  ideas  for  its  first  mission  which  will  occur  during  the  season  of  Pylipivka  (Advent)  so  please  stay  tuned  over  the  coming  weeks!  

IniEally,  the  students  who  joined  S.M.A.C.  had  no  idea  about  the  big  surprise  that  came  in  late  October.  They  were  given  the  opportunity  to  aDend  We  Day  on  October  29th.  We  Day  is  a  celebraEon  of  posiEve  change.  Musicians,  speakers  and  celebriEes  graced  the  stage  at  the  MTS  Centre  and  promoted  different  social  jusEce  campaigns  as  well  as  reinforced  the  fact  that  young  people  can  make  the  world  a  beDer  place.  As  one  of  the  speakers  said,  “it  just  takes  one  liDle  light  to  break  the  darkness”.  The  IHMS  students  who  aDended  leY  We  Day  with  many  ideas  and  incredible  confidence.  They  know  that  they  can  change  the  world  and  they  definitely  cannot  wait  to  get  started!

IHMS  Mad  Science  Club  The  IHMS  Mad  Science  program,  for  students  in  grades  3-­‐6,  is  now  underway.    Each  week  the  children  are  exploring  new  and  exciEng,  hands-­‐on,  science  topics.  The  program  runs  every  Thursday  from  3:15  to  4:30,  except  for  the  early  dismissals  when  the  program  will  run  from  2:15  to  3:15.  The  last  day  of  the  program  is  December  11.

• The  Uniform  Shop  is  open  on  Wednesday,  November  12,  from  3:00  -­‐  5:00PM.,  and  then  again  on  Wednesday,  January  14  and  February  11  from    3:00  -­‐  5:00PM.  

IHMS  Volleyball  Ac=on  -­‐  Go  Spirit  Go!!  CongratulaEons  to  all  three  of  the  school’s  volleyball  teams  on  the  great  seasons  they  are  having.    They  are  developing  their  volleyball  skills  on  the  court,  and  as  well,  represenEng  themselves  and  the  school  in  a  very  posiEve  light  with  their  display  of  superb  sportsmanship.    Thank  you  to  the  parent  chaperones  that  drive  the  students  to  all  the  tournaments,  games  and  pracEces.  Take  note  on  the  monthly  calendar  of  the  dates  our  volleyball  teams  will  be  playing  home  games  in  the  IHMS  gymnasium.  Games  begin  at  4:00  P.M.  and  finish  at  5:00  P.M..  Come  on  out  and  cheer  on  the  Spirit!!

During  the  ‘open  to  the  public’  Emes,  the  Sadochok  -­‐  Grade  6  students  must  have  an  adult  with  them  to  purchase  books,          OR  students  may  purchase  books  with  their  teacher  during  their  ‘classroom  designated’  purchase  Eme.  

The  students  will  have  an  opportunity  to  parEcipate  in  a  contest  to  have  a  chance  at  winning  coupons  to  use  at  the  Book  Fair.    Families  may  enter  the  Family  Event  Draw  for  $25  worth  of  free  books  for  their  personal  library  and  $25  worth  of  free  books  for  their  classroom  library.  ONLY  OFFICIAL  BALLOTS  WILL  BE  ACCEPTED.      The  official  ballot  will  be  in  the  ScholasEc  Book  Fair  promoEonal  brochure  (distributed  to  students    in  mid-­‐November)  along  with  a  note  with  more  informaEon  about  the  Book  Fair.  

By  purchasing  books  and  supporEng  the  IHMS  Book  Fair,  you  enable  our  school  to  obtain  new  resources  for  the  school  and  classroom  libraries  AND  get  your  Christmas/  Birthday  giY  shopping  done  at  the  same  Eme!    The  Book  Fair  will  accept  cheques  (made  payable  to  IHMS),  VISA,  Mastercard  and  American  Express.  See  you  at  the  Book  Fair!

    Grade  8  Class  Retreat                                               On  October  23,  the  grade  8  class  had  the  opportunity  to  ‘get  away’  for  a  day    …  to  build  a                                                       stronger  sense  of  community.  They    engaged  in  conversaEon  and  acEviEes  to  help  them                                                       focus  and  develop  their  relaEonship  with  Jesus  Christ  ….  and  each  other.    The  day  was                                                  facilitated  by  Ms.  DePiero,  Miss  Rowe,  Mrs.  Tycholis  and  Mr.  Picklyk.    The  students  and  staff  spent  the  day  at  Camp  Manitou  parEcipaEng  in  retreat  sessions,  reflecEng  on  their  own  life  and  relaEonships,    parEcipaEng  in  outdoor  acEviEes,  and  even  preparing  their  own  lunch  and  snacks.    Our  future  grads  will  now  take  what  they  received  and  implement  it  into  their  daily  (someEmes  hecEc)  lives.    May  the  Holy  Spirit  conEnue  to  move  them!
