I will not leave you orphaned
“I will not leave you orphaned.” says Jesus to his Apostles. (John 4:15-21) He lived with them for three years, they listened to His teachings, and they had witnessed the wonderful miracles He wrought: calming the stormy sea, feeding the hungry multitudes and raising the dead back to life. They encountered Him after His resurrection for forty days as He appeared to them. He built their trust and confidence in Him. Now He was to return to his Father; bid them farewell and take His leave. Jesus has accomplished His earthly mission and He had to prepare His disciples to carry out His mission on earth. When He left, they felt lost and lonely, forsaken, and forgotten. Isn’t this the way we too feel at times especially during our World crises? We feel orphaned. God seems so far away and even when we pray, He seems so distant and deaf. We feel we have been left to tend for ourselves. We feel we are struggling alone, and we are tempted to think that we are praying in a void. Even the apostles had trouble in their hearts. “I will not leave you orphaned.” These words of Jesus are so comforting and consoling to us. He does not leave us orphaned. He is with us as He promised to be even to the end of time, giving us his Spirit as our Advocate to plead our cause and fight our case. Kings and empires have risen and fallen, crises and catastrophes have hit the Church, and through it all the Church has emerged, safe and strong because of God. The Holy Spirit took charge after the ascension of Jesus to heaven to carry on the work of salvation on earth. Before ascending to heaven, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, so that the Holy Spirit may guide the new Church formed by the Apostles and believers to spread of the Kingdom of God. How is it going to work? We find the witnesses of the power of the Holy Spirit in the first and seconding readings of the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Baptised Samaritans received the anointing of the Holy Spirit by the imposition of hands by the apostles Peter and John (Acts 8:14-17) because it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. They became ever active and bold in service to one another and the joy of preaching, making possible for us believers to lead a God-fearing life, to live courageously during opposition and persecution. (1 Peter 3:15-18) In the last supper discourse (John 14:15-18) Jesus promises a gift of the Holy Spirit, and He will continue His presence to us in the Church through the Sacraments. He instructs us through His teachings and illumine our minds to receive deeper knowledge of our faith to defend it powerfully. He will guide us properly in our practice of true Christian love. The Holy Spirit will enable us to become strong and will come to our aid to give us strength to make difficult and painful decisions. Like the baptised Samaritans, we continually remain thankful to God in Jesus and the hope of our resurrection; He gave us the reason to respect one another and to have reverence to God. This week let us pray that the trials we have faced in the past few months, the suffering we continue to endure, will not hold back the life of the Holy Spirit in us. The Joy of the Gospel will be in us and we in the Lord. With the Psalmist, let us say, “Let all the earth cry out to God with Joy” (Ps. 66:1)

No te dejare desamparado
“No te dejare desamparado”.

DID YOU KNOW? Protect young people from cyberbullying
Cyberbullying can happen at any time, on any online platform. It can take many forms – cruel direct messages, threatening emails, mean texts, shared photos, and more. Victims of cyber-bullying often suffer from anxiety and depression, and their self-esteem can be diminished. They may be reluctant to talk about bullying, so parents need to be on top of all their children’s online activities. Asking questions and getting information about popular apps and sites will help, too. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Cyber-Bullying: Protecting Young People from Technology Dangers” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
