Immaculata News
“Firstly that journey to Jerusalem with palm
branches strewn in the path of Jesus and his
disciples by an expectant crowd, and the
very visible tension in the air at the Last
Supper as Jesus reveals that one of those sat
by him would betray him. Then the betrayal
by one of those whom Jesus had trusted and
loved and the trial, which had only one cer-
tain outcome because that was the politi-
cally correct one to make. Follow that with
accusations; the beating and whipping at
the hands of the soldiers; crucifixion as chief
priests, teachers of the law and elders
looked on; and now the climax as Jesus is
revealed alive and risen from the dead.
Easter commemorates the resurrection of
Jesus Christ. It is the most important Chris-
tian festival, and the one celebrated with the
greatest joy. Without Easter, there would be
no Christianity. Without Jesus' suffering, his
execution and subsequent resurrection,
there would be no Christianity, for however
terrible the suffering was, it was part of
God's plan for the salvation of humankind.
In Western Christianity, Easter marks the
end of Lent, a period of fasting and peni-
tence in preparation for Easter. Lent begins
on Ash Wednesday and lasts forty days
(not counting Sundays).
The week before Easter, known as Holy
Week, is very special in the Christian tradi-
tion. The Sunday before Easter is Palm
Sunday, and the last three days before
Easter are Maundy Thursday or Holy
Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday
(sometimes referred to as Silent Saturday).
Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and
Good Friday respectively commemorate
Jesus' entry in Jerusalem, the Last Supper
and the Crucifixion.”

An Easter Prayer
Of all of God's gifts
Easter shows us our fate
Forgiven we will rise
And pass through Heaven's gate
This Easter remember
The sacrifice of a Son
And through His resurrection
Eternal life we have won
This Easter I pray
That the love of God
Is resurrected
Reborn, renewed
Inside your heart
God Bless You!

From Lari Hatley
Greetings Immaculata Parents!
We have a great opportunity to make a dif-
ference in the lives of our children with our
Spring fundraiser of the semester, the
Boosterthon Fun Run!
The goal of the Boosterthon Fun Run is to
raise funds while teaching our kids about
the importance of Fitness, Leadership, and
Character. Our goal is to raise at least
$25,000 to support Immaculata, and we
need your help! We are very excited to have
the Boosterthon Fun Run Team on campus
this semester, as they will be adding value
in so many ways to our students and our
school!
The Boosterthon Fun Run is a nine day pro-
gram that will kick off with a Pep Rally
(parents are invited) on March 12. Please
look for the Boosterthon Pledge Pack that
will come home with your child on March
12th, and be sure to visit the new fun-
run.com to begin entering pledges.
On the last day of the program, ALL stu-
dents will participate in the Boosterthon
Fun Run event, which will take place March
21.
We need your help! We are asking parents
to connect their student to ten (10) potential
sponsors who can pledge a dollar amount
per lap or give a flat donation towards their
student’s Fun Run. Most students will run
somewhere between 25-35 laps at the
Boosterthon Fun Run (max laps = 35). For
example, a $5.00 pledge per lap x 25 laps
would equal a $125.00 gift to the school. All
checks are made payable to Immaculata and
are due one week after the Fun Run. All do-
nations are 100% tax deductible.
We ask you to help Immaculata in the fol-
lowing three ways:
Connect your child to sponsors—friends
& family—who can give a pledge.
Come and cheer on your child at the
Boosterthon Fun Run on March 21!
Go to www.boosterthon.com to learn
more about the Boosterthon Fun Run. Or
connect at www.facebook.com/
boosterthon
Thank you again for being such a wonderful
group of parents! The investment you make
in the lives of our students and our school is
noticed and appreciated. Get excited! We
look forward to seeing you at the Booster-
thon Fun Run!
Financial Aid
The deadline for 2013-14 Financial Aid ap-
plication was February 15, 2013. If you have
applied please check your application
status. If any documentation is missing,
please submit it ASAP. We cannot consider
an application if it is not complete. Notifica-
tion of 2013-14 awards for Financial Aid will
be mailed in early April.
Middle School Career Day
On April 12, 2013, we will have Career Day
for the Middle School. The students are very
interested in learning about what YOU do!
Doctors, engineers, accountants, lawyers,
artist, architects, scientists, professional ath-
letes…the list goes on and on. We are seek-
ing speakers who will engage students and
help open their eyes to a range of career op-
portunities, help students make a connec-
tion between their school work and future,
and give them a realistic view of the work-
place. Speakers will also discuss educational
and skill requirements for entering their
field.
If you are interested in participating in Ca-
reer Day as a guest speaker, please call 682-
5847 or email Martina Eason
[email protected] or Tim Miller mil-
[email protected]. Thanks in advance!
DID YOU KNOW? The Boosterthon Fun Run Team will spend over 300 hours organizing, plan-ning, and executing every detail of the program, making the Boosterthon Fun Run hassle-free for our faculty, staff, and par-ents! They will also lead a fun character campaign during the program. This year’s character theme is “Highway USA.” Students will be going on the road to good choices. Our students will be build-ing character through the five character lessons. *Choose Leadership *Choose Character *Choose Learning *Choose Fitness *Choose a good attitude Be sure to watch the daily character videos at fun-run.com!
Our Donors are making a Difference!
Your dollars are making a difference at Im-
maculata. Our teachers are ordering the
items that you made possible. Your generos-
ity means the middle school science class
can now video their ingenious presenta-
tions. It means the baseball coach is beam-
ing, and the new uniforms will have the
whole team smiling. Students in Mrs. Rains
class enjoy individual time on their iPad.
Students in Mr. Latimer’s room say, not
only is glare on the Promethean Board no
longer a problem, but they can make their
room so dark they need flashlights. OK.
That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the
bottom line is the new blinds are giving the
classes more options and better learning
time. Thanks to all our generous donors. We
will share more things you have made pos-
sible soon!
Choral Notes
Congratulations to all the students who par-
ticipated in the Trinity Choral Festival on
Feb 22 and 23! They did an outstanding job
and we are proud of each and every partici-
pant! Our directors for the day included
Scott Hill (director of the Durham Chil-
dren’s Chorus) and Dan Huff (Professor of
Music at UNC-CH) They were so impressed
with our Immaculata students! Look for the
link on the school website to see a clip of
highlights of the day. Again, congratula-
tions to our students on their hard work and
a great performance!
Our Junior Choir and Liturgical Choir stu-
dents have been working very hard this se-
mester and they are sounding wonderful!
They have been learning hymn tunes, some
spirituals, and a few pieces in Latin, as well
as some contemporary pieces. The Junior
Choir will sing at Friday Morning Prayer on
March 15 , April 12 and May 3rd, and during
Mass on April 23 and May 7. The Liturgical
Choir sings during each school mass and
will be presenting special selections on Mar
26, April 9, April 23, May 14 and May 21.
The Liturgical Choir will also sing at
Graduation on Saturday, June 1.
Our Middle School Vocal Club is getting off
to a great start! Our students are working on
several selections ranging from Mozart to
Bruno Mars with a little Broadway and
Adele thrown in. They will be performing
on Friday, May 17 at the Band/Vocal Club
Spring Concert at 7:00 p.m. in EK.
The King’s Dominion Music Festival will
take place on Saturday, April 27. Our ICS
Band, Liturgical Choir and Vocal Club will
take part in this exciting opportunity for our
music organizations. Watch for details to
come!

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atria
Level II (Grades 1, 2, and 3)
Catechists: Susanne Newman
Jennifer Green ([email protected])
What we’re doing:
In Level II, our Lenten focus in all grades is
on the history and the traditions that make
us who we are as Catholic Christians. We
read Scripture together and discuss if and
how it applies to “our” (the children’s) lives
today. We review what we know about Je-
rusalem and wonder: Why so many walls?
How did the people use the pools? What
were the houses really like? We examine the
Liturgy of the Eucharist and look at and re-
flect upon each gesture and prayer, remem-
bering this occurs at every Mass at every
church in many languages in every part of
the world.
Examples:
Our Atrium materials include paper and
pencil, but most of our materials are models
the children use to help them internalize the
presented concept, such as:
The Good Shepherd and the Hireling:
This work consists of a round wooden
“pen” painted green (the grass) with a
wood and rope fence and two-
dimensional wooden figures (the Good
Shepherd, sheep, the hired hand, and a
wolf).
The City of Jerusalem: An outline of Jeru-
salem is painted on plywood – sort of a
flat map. The pieces of this work are
walls, houses, pools, the Tower of Anto-
nia, Herod’s palace, the Temple, the Ce-
nacle, the Mount of Olives, a tomb, a
cross, and a candle. The children place

Based on Etty Hillesum’s, An Interrupted Life, the letters of a young Jewish woman from Amsterdam whose family was interred at Westerbork Camp in NE Netherlands. Pope Benedict XVI recently said of Etty Hillesum: “In her scattered and restless life, she finds God in the middle of the great tragedy of the twentieth century, the Shoah. This young fragile and dissatisfied woman, transfigured by faith, becomes a woman full of love and inner peace, able to say: I live in constant inti-macy with God.”

these items on the map, building a model
of Jerusalem while recalling the events
leading up to Christ’s Passion, death and
Resurrection – the central event of our
Redemption.
Articles/Gestures: We have cruets with
wine, water and a chalice the children use
to prepare the chalice; a pitcher with wa-
ter, a basin, and a towel for Lavabo; the
prepared chalice, a paten, and paper hosts
for Epiclesis and Offering. In addition to
using these materials during Atrium, we
encourage the children to watch for these
articles and gestures during Mass. (You
might have to sit near the front for your
child to see!)
It happened one day:
An example of connections that the children
make: While meditating on Psalm 23 at our
opening circle I asked the children what
they heard, and if these words reminded
them of anything. These second graders of-
fered responses such as “setting a table,”
“the Last Supper,” “the oils of Baptism.” At
one point, a child noticed some of the
phrases in the Psalm were included in their
lunch prayer. The entire class then recited
their lunch prayer. Several children asked if
we could say that prayer even though we
were not eating. Discussion continued re-
garding whether food is the only nourish-
ment the Good Shepherd provides. Later
that day, in a third grade class, we also con-
sidered Psalm 23. We were not long into our
discussion before a child said, “That’s like
the lunch prayer we said last year.”
Reminder: Children preparing for 1st Eucha-
rist should be working at home in their
workbooks. Also, if you have not signed up
for a Mass time for your child’s 1st Eucharist
