Out of the pounding surf of life

We come to this deep quiet pool.Imagine siesta.

    People: Imagine siesta.

Needs throbbing just beyond the reef,

We look for some still place

To let the silt of living settle into God.

    Imagine siesta.

    People: Imagine siesta.

We come because the God of all creation calls us into being.

    Imagine siesta.

    People: Imagine siesta.

Seek first the presence of God,

    seek and you shall find.

    [end a capella]

    [spoken]

    Holy One, you have searched me and You know me;

    You know when I sit and when I stand;

You understand my thoughts from afar.

You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

Where can I go from Your spirit?

from Your presence where can I flee?

If I go up to the highest point, You are there;if I sink to the depths, You are present there.

If I take the wings of the dawn,

if I settle at the farthest limits of the sea,Even there Your hand shall guide me,

and Your right hand hold me fast.

Truly You have formed my inmost being; You knit me in my mothers womb.

I give You thanks that I am awesomely,

    wonderfully made;wonderful are Your works.

    My soul also You knew full well;

nor was my frame unknown to You,When I was made in secret,

when I was fashioned in the depths of the earth. How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God.

How vast is the sum of them!

I try to count them they are more than the sand;I come to the end

    I am still with you.

Seek first the presence of God,

    seek and you shall find.

The Life Youve Always Wanted [excerpt]

Imagine for a moment that someone gave you this prescription, with the warning that your life

depends on it. Consider the possibility that perhaps you life does depend on it. Hurry is the

great enemy of spiritual life in our day. Hurry can destroy our souls. Hurry can keep us fromliving well. As Carl Jung wrote, Hurry is not of the devil; hurry is the devil. Again and again,

as we pursue spiritual life, we must do battle with hurry. For many of us the great danger is not

that we will renounce our faith. It is that we will become so distracted and rushed andpreoccupied that we will settle for a mediocre version of it. We will just skim our lives instead

    of actually living them.

    [sung]

Seek first the presence of God,

    seek and you shall find.

    Divine Healer,

Touch my memory so I may see your holy work

in my life and in the world:

    the easing of pain,

    the healing of memories,

    the recovery from wounds.

May the rhythms of siesta experienced here,

and the inspiration of the saints who go before us,

urge us to rhythms of joyous living and loving.

    [ensemble sings refrain]

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.

She carries me, She carries meShe carries me to the other side.

    [spoken]

We gather to breathe into this space the names of those carried to the other side.

The reverberations of these lives in the aguas profundas,

the deep waters of our lives, continue to rock us gently in their wake.

    [sung by ensemble]

She is a boat, She is a light,High on a hill in dark of night

She is the way, She is the deep,

She is the dark where angels sleepWhen all is still and peace abides

She carries me to the other side.

    [congregation joins refrain]

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.

The first half of the list is called out. A shell is placed in a bowl of water with sand in the bottom

    as each name is called.

    [sung by ensemble]

And though I walk through valleys deep

and shadows chase me in my sleep

On rocky cliffs I stand aloneI have no name I have no home

With broken sings I reach to fly

She carries me to the other side.

    [congregation joins refrain]

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.

The second half of the list is called out. A shell is placed in a bowl of water with sand in the

bottom as each name is called.

    [sung by ensemble]

A thousand arms, a thousand eyesA thousand ears to hear my cries.

She is the gate, She is the dawn

She leads me through and back once more. When day is done and death is nigh

She carries me to the other side.

    [congregation joins refrain]

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.

    [spoken]

You are invited to breathe into this space, either aloud or in the silence of your hearts, the namesof any who have been carried over in the loving arms of the Holy One.

    [music stops the people respond]

    [sung by all]

She is the first, She is the last

She is the future and the past.

Mother of all of earth and sky,

She carries me to the other side.

She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side. She carries me, She carries me

She carries me to the other side.
