HOLLY“I have been really lucky to have excellent mentors throughout my career so far and so it’s great to be a mentor myself now to Janay. My mentors are based in multiple locations, however all of them kindly offer their support and advice when needed. I have been at a few crossroads in my career so far where I have known that I want to do something different, a new challenge, however I didn’t know what or how to get there. This is when my mentors really came into their own, offering advice and guidance on what they believe would be best for me and my career. These mentors have enabled me to have such a diverse and varied career so far. I do not believe there is any age limit to being a mentee and having a mentor — I truly value my mentors and will be continuing to seek out their thoughts and guidance.”

JANAY“I have been working with Jacobs since September 2014 within our Energy, Waste & Water business unit with a major Utilities client. I have a degree in Physical Geography and my previous experience has included working for a flow monitoring company in a site based role with six months experience in project management. On joining Jacobs I was immediately placed on secondment into a major Utilities client office working as solutions engineer.

How do I get started?

Mentoring at Jacobs

“I was actually sponsored by the company through university and completed three summer placements with them. After graduation I decided to join Jacobs for the opportunities offered.”

I am an Economic Consultant and I specialise in economic appraisal and financial analysis. My role varies from project to project but I often find myself providing a piece of insightful economic analysis to support investment or optioneering decisions.

My work has been discussed in the UK Parliament and the advice I provide shapes many key decisions, inspiring me to work even harder every day.

WORK LOCATION: Glasgow

My role consists of performing structural analysis using computational software and advanced mathematics on new or existing structures within the process industry. I am responsible for assessing the integrity of these structures when there has been a change in design, loading or in several instances when new equipment has been installed.

People would be surprised with the level of responsibility I have been given by my manager at such an early stage in my career. Currently, I am the Civil/ Structural lead for a major oil and gas project. This entails me controlling my own budget and resources, and developing the strategy for the project. Consequently, I am in constant engagement with the client project engineers and managers which has helped me create a positive relationship with the client.

“I enjoy the diversity of my role, most graduates would be responsible for their own tasks handed by their manager. In my case, since I manage my own projects I am not only responsible for my own deliverables, but of the entire discipline. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been handed and thrive on the extra expectations that my role demands.”

I work with Worcestershire County Council producing maintenance schemes covering their structures. These schemes range from minor parapet repairs and graffiti removal from subways to major works such as complete replacements of culverts and rebuilding fallen retaining walls due to a road traffic collision.

I would say that you should never be afraid of setting your goals high. If your goals lead you down a path to try different areas of engineering, make your intent clear to your line manager and you never know!

“With Jacobs, I would like my apprenticeship to lead me onto chartership and the opportunity to work abroad in places like Australia or the USA, to deepen my knowledge of different procedures, culture and working life.”

I work on infrastructure projects to help make them as sustainable as possible to provide value for money, lifecycle longevity, social improvements and environmental protection. My role is mainly focused around assisting in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process and preparation of an Environmental Statement (ES) which supplements a planning application for construction projects.

My average day is therefore varied and can consist of report writing, coordinating surveys, desktop researching, attending site visits and liaising with stakeholders.

“My role is perfect for me, because I thrive when faced with a diverse set of challenges which encourage me to be my very best, all with the knowledge that my role is making a difference. I feel that I have joined a team which has a dynamic approach towards overcoming environmental challenges.”

WORK LOCATION: London

As a transport planner, my overreaching aim is to improve the transport network which covers roads, rail, tube, cycles, and pedestrians. My team has allowed me to explore different parts of transport planning to determine which area I enjoy the most and would like to focus on. So far, I have worked on projects ranging from reviewing local development plans, during which I worked alongside the public as road improvement plans were announced, as well as supporting a project management team on a large-scale bid.

I am lucky enough to see inspiring moments all the time. The transport planning team in my office is extremely hard working and dedicated. By watching, listening, asking questions and taking their advice, I have witnessed how much they enjoy the work they do.

“I am part of Jacobs’ Careers Network, through which I have been able to meet to like-minded people who are also at the start of their career. The graduate development programme has also been a great benefit to me – as well as setting me up with the skills I’ll need throughout my career, it has enabled me to create a network of support outside of my team.”

I am the NEC Site Supervisor representing a county council on a number of highways schemes ranging from £1 million to £3 million in the Midlands. My role on site is to monitor the works, carried out by the contractor awarded the contract, and ensure they are completed in a timely manner, to design, specification and cost.

Networking is your key to success and growth, I have been heavily involved, co-lead and represented on a national and international level, the Jacobs Careers Network. I really enjoy working as an Instrument, Control and Automation (ICA) Engineer, writing various reports, such as control philosophy, and working on schedules, such as telemetry schedules plus developing network architecture for projects. I find it interesting to attend meetings such as a Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP), where engineers identify and assess potential hazards at the site. Alongside working on projects, I have attended several seminars that have helped me develop more knowledge and understanding about products and processes used by engineers within the company.

“As a new graduate and intern - embrace your new role at Jacobs. My advice is to expand your knowledge beyond your role, because as a graduate/intern you have all the possibilities to move in various directions and you never know what you will enjoy the most if you do not experiment.”
