What are Everything Cities™ and how are they different from Smart Cities or Intelligent Cities?

You can read Wikipedia’s full definition of Smart Cities, but it’s generally understood to be the collection of data to make decisions in urban areas.

You can read GE’s definition of an Intelligent City, but it usually means using technologies to help the well-being of citizens by reducing costs and resource use.

That’s good. But there is so much more we can do.

Everything Cities™ are the brainchild of the founder and president of Saaby Consulting Company, Karen Jensen. Through extensive research and deep dives into scientific, technical, social and educational incentives and best practices, SCC and its founder have built a next generation solution to economic, social and environmental issues, funded by existing initiatives.

Industrial Revolution Evolution

Before the 1st Industrial Revolution, we were mostly a rural, farming society who lived and worked on the cycle of sunlight and darkness.

5th Industrial Revolution

What’s different about the 5th Revolution?

In each of the previous revolutions, new technologies defined machine-oriented and digital advancements.

In the 5th revolution, we envision human-oriented advancements, supported by emerging technologies. This revolution demands that we build transparent and ethical sets of principles, laws and practices to guide governments, businesses and people in how we will harness emerging technologies and how we can solve economic, environmental and human problems.

Everything Cities™ support the United Nations Sustainable Goals

What’s the current plan?

Current predictive models, like the UN World Urbanization Prospects 2018 shown here, all indicate that urbanization will create a new scale of geography, known as Megacities. These Megacities are expected to contain most of the world’s population and would be the hubs of economic expansion.

Extensive research and minds more brilliant than ours have built this hypothesis and it may very well come to pass. However, this urbanization is predicted on coastal landscapes. Based on reputable climate change models, all these regions can expect to be impacted by coastal flooding. These coastal regions are classified as Flood Zone V by FEMA.

Challenge: Of the 11 Megaregions proposed in the US, 7 are identified on coastallandscapes. Based on reputable climate change models, all these regions can expect to be impacted by coastal flooding.

The green spots are all the places that fit the traditional definition of food deserts: urban census tracts where a significant proportion of people live more than a mile away from a grocery store and rural tracts where they live more than 10 miles away. The yellow spots are low-income areas where a significant proportion of people don’t have access to cars or live 20 miles away from the supermarket.

The areal and vertical location of the major aquifers is fundamental to the determination of groundwater availability for the Nation. An aquifer is a geologic formation, a group of formations, or a part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells and springs.

The 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones.

Compare the UN World Urbanization Prospects 2018 map to the aquifer map, the plant hardiness zone map and the food desert map (Click on any map to go to the website)

Challenge: Megaregions overlap food deserts, are farther from water sources than they need to be and to date, no sustainable agriculture food plan has been presented.

Here’s some data about these plans

Our natural world is changing.

Everything Cities™ are building for a sustainable future. We’re harmonizing with our environments by planting indigenous species, supporting pollinator species populations, reducing our carbon footprints and planning for catastrophic weather conditions.

The best science tells us the Holocene extinction event is already underway. This human caused event predicts cataclysmic loss of species with causal factors including deforestation, climate change, overfishing and a general disregard for sustainable practices in every aspect of the known sciences. On a planetary scale, despite the advancements of emerging technologies, humanity is at risk.

We can change that risk.

Everything Cities™ strategies – Innovation

It’s exactly the right time for the Everything Cities™ concept. As we move from Information technology towards Emerging technology, we can only imagine how our lives will change.

The Japanese have a very ambitious plan for these changes called Society 5.0. In tandem with the 5th Industrial revolution, this plan calls for change at the societal level. From aging populations to ethical considerations, we need a new way of thinking about where we are going.

People are tired of sloppy leadership practices and organizational failures to share profits with the people who help these organizations obtain those profits. By incorporating High Trust leadership strategies, building High Performance Work Systems (HPWS), and practicing Interactional fairness, Everything Cities™ can change the paradigm from employee drudgery and the working poor to citizen involvement and living wages.

In step with emerging technologies, we need to incorporate lifelong learning and working pathways to accommodate new technologies and opportunities. Ridiculous as it may seem, there are still many communities in the United States without access to high speed Internet. These digital deserts, and how we can solve this problem, are part of the strategies and solutions of Everything Cities™.

Everything Cities™ strategies - Create opportunity

According to the data as of July 06, 2018, the S.N.A.P. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program costs taxpayers $36,592,787,121 annually – that’s thirty-six and a half BILLION dollars. The Everything Cities™ design proposes a better way to get people back on their feet and on the pathway to self-sufficiency and contribution.

Small businesses are the backbone of the country. But big business makes the rules and often choke out the competition. Everything Cities™ are designed for entrepreneurship and small business. It’s Fair Share Economics.

It’s time for an end to unfair work practices and lack of opportunities for under-represented community members. Everything Cities™ are population demographic representative. We are not born racist or prejudice – these are learned behaviors. Everything Cities™ are revamping the way we educate our youth (and our adults) to make sure we aren’t continuing to teach those behaviors.

We’re building ethical citizens. In Everything Cities™, we Eat, Play, Live, Work and Contribute. The ideal is to be citizen owned and operated.

Everything Cities™ strategies – P3 Champions

To date, we’ve identified over 100 entities and organizations that can work together to build historic partnerships between government, business and people to solve problems.

26 Government agencies 9 Global partnerships 22 private enterprises 59 Non-profit organizations

Everything Cities™ strategies – Living Laboratories

No one really knows where emerging technologies will take us, or what the best strategies will be. We need prototype and pilot cities to:

Build, develop and test military grade cybersecurity installations, command capable for the Fifth Dimension of warfare.

Design and test smart city infrastructures across multiple platforms of data analytics, sensor functionality, artificial intelligence and digital twin monitoring, climate audits, autonomous structural and climate sensors, water and waste monitoring and connectivity surrounding the Internet of Things.

Outline built environments harmonized to local environments and weather conditions, that also include indigenous agricultural food plans and resource conservation.

Dynamic kiosks where citizens can access city services information, local events calendars, restaurant menus, and walkability scores for city trails

Implement citizen and human centric solutions for affordable housing, access to quality healthcare, mental health support services and wellness programs, and car-free/car-lite living capabilities.

Begin discussions and legislations that protect citizen information and “need to know” only accessibility. Everything Cities™ are committed to transparent processes and reporting for governments and business.
