Describing a picture to the blind

Page 2: imagery

• As certain members of the class sit with their heads down, describe a picture in terrific detail…but do not go overboard

• You cannot write for more than 4 lines. Combine things…her hair that covers her empty eyes, a grin shedding light on disfigured teeth, etc.

Page 3: imagery

• Look for details others might miss.• Use vivid language• Provide original metaphors• Use unique and lively language. Don’t describe

someone’s face as simply “leathery” (though that’s not a terrible description)…rather, describe it as a “well worn baseball mitt” or “a sea turtle’s neck”

Page 4: imagery

• Don’t go on forever. Choose the most dominant images. If a person’s nose is quite ordinary, describe it as such or don’t mention it at all

•READY?? Head’s down to some

• Now, how about some famous people? Describe them well enough, without naming them, and you will be a success
