Methodology and Sample

•  This report presents the findings of the fourth of four waves in 2014 of the IMA (Interim Management Association) Membership Audit.

•  The study, now in its 9th year, has been carried out from 2006 on a quarterly basis.

•  IMA members participated in an online survey entering data for each

assignment completed between 1st October and 31st December 2014.

•  This report is based upon findings from the 18 participating members of the IMA.

•  Fieldwork was carried out from January through to mid February 2015.

Number of completed assignments

•  The results from the fourth quarter of 2014 show the 18 participating IMA members completed a total of 279 interim assignments. The average number of assignments completed per member has gone down by 1 and is now at an average of 16 from 17 in Q3 2014.

•  The average number of assignments in progress per member has largely dropped from 69 (Q3 2014) to 56 (Q4 2014).

•  The overall number of new assignments started this quarter has slightly increased from 354 in Q3 2014 to 356. The highest number of new assignments started this quarter has also risen from 50 Q3 2014 to 72 Q4 2014. The net variance between new assignments started (356) and completed (279) is +77 this quarter, up from +47 in Q3 2014.

•  As of 31st December 2014, the 18 participating IMA members had a total of 1,009 assignments in progress. The highest number of interim managers on assignment on 31st December 2014 from one member was 174.

•  We have seen an expansion in the average length of assignments from 152 days in Q3 2014 to 172 days this quarter.

•  The gender split has remains similar this quarter, with female executives accounting for 32% of all the assignments and male executives accounting for 68%.

Public sector vs. private sector

§  This quarter the private sector accounted for 67% of all completed assignments, up from 51%

in Q3 2014. The public sectors contribution to completed assignments has decreased from 49% in Q3 2014 to 33% in Q4 2014. The almost even split between the public and private sectors last quarter has not been repeated, with a much larger proportion of completed assignments being back in the private sector.

§  The Financial Service sector continues to lead, but going down from 46% in Q3 2014 to 39%

of all private sector assignments being from this sector this quarter. §  Followed by the Chemical Pharmaceutical & Biotech with an 11% share and Retail, with a 9%

share this quarter.

§  Local Government remains the lead in the public sector with a 41% share (same as Q3 2014). This is followed by the Central Government sector with 22% and Education sector with 17%.

§  25% of assignment functions were for Special projects, which is down 6 percentage points from Q3 2014 (31%). This is followed by Finance with 21% this quarter, which is the same share as in Q3 2014.

§  The leading reason for an assignment remains Programme/Project Management with 62%

of all interim executives hired for this purpose this quarter, which is down 1 percentage points (63% Q3 2014).

§  The next most common reasons for assignments remains Gap Management with 17% this

quarter, marginally up from 16% in Q3 2014.

An ‘enquiry’ is defined as any contact for an assignment which led to a meeting with a prospective client and putting a shortlist forward. § The average number of enquiries received by each member that took part this quarter is 80. This has increased from the last quarter where the average number was 77.

§ 71% of enquiries came from the private sector this quarter and 29% from the public sector, the split has remained relatively stable since Q2 2013.
