Livestock systems in the Region
Some balance between intensive and more extensive systems
![Page 4: ILRI in East and Southeast Asia: Summary of current profile and emerging priorities for stakeholder feedback](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051818/5493f8eab47959962d8b584a/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Poverty levels in the region
High variation in degree of poverty, but significant levels remain in some areas
![Page 5: ILRI in East and Southeast Asia: Summary of current profile and emerging priorities for stakeholder feedback](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051818/5493f8eab47959962d8b584a/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The role of agriculture
High continued dependence on agriculture, 16% of
agricultural GDP, greater than SSA

Perceptions of the Region
• Dynamic growth generally, even in poorer countries
• Rapidly intensifying systems in many areas, but diversity
• Large projected deficits in supply of livestock products in future
• Still widespread poverty in some countries
• Large regional trade in livestock, some informal
• Important role for non-ruminants , such as pigs, but ruminant production growing
• Significant presence of ethnic minorities amongst the poorest
• Environmental and human health threats due to rapid system change, emerging disease, and climate change
• Strong research capacity among partners, but variable
