protector held by a chain fastened to the guard-bow, swivel-

ramrod; iron-mounted, carved with "W. W." on stock.

Made in London for the Civil War—a light carbine, very popular

on both sides. Illustrated in the U. S. Cartridge Company collection.

Very rare carbine, calibre about .53.

28. BROWNS CONVERTED ENFIELD (ENGLISH) RIFLE.Bolt breech loader with bayonet, blued barrel, ramrod ; brass

trigger guard and stock cap; length 33^ in.

29. BREECH-LOADING PIN-SHOT CARBINE.No name of maker but resembles No. 230 of the Lowell Col-

lection having the barrel connected with the butt by a hinge

below and held by a long spring on top of the barrel. Thespring is lifted by a lever behind the trigger. Well made andgood condition.

30. BURNSIDE BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE.Metallic cartridge, calibre .50 ; blued steel, stamped "Burn-

side Rifle Co., Providence, R. I." Model of 1862.A movable chamber is pivoted in front under the barrel, in closing,

the breech-block has a forward movement, pushing the cartridge whichis tapering into the barrel. A very popular light carbine of the Civil

War.

34. OLD CHARLEVILLE FLINT LOCK MUSKET. 1763.

Relic of the American Revolution. These old guns, brought

over by La Fayette, served as the model for the original U. S.

Springfields. This veteran is stamped "Charleville" on lock

with "R" above it and "D" on stock. Barrel 45y2 inches.

Calibre 59. No bayonet. Condition very fair. Model of 1763.

35. THE RARE W. W. MARSTON CARBINE.One of the scarcest of American pieces. In very good cleaned

condition. One of the best authorities says of this carbine

:

This uses the paper cartridge, which is unlike the one used in his

pistol, the pistol cartridge being made of heavy cardboard loaded with

gun cotton. It operates with under lever somewhat similar to the

Sharp carbine. The reason I am using the above comparison is be-

cause this is the first one to be offered at auction, and, indeed, the

only one I have seen. Without doubt an extremely rare piece.

43. COLT REVOLVING MUSKET.Civil war period. Complete 5 shot, .50 calibre. Stamped

"Col. Colt, Hartford, Ct. U. S. A. Colts Pat. Nov. 24th, 1857"

No. 3130. When the old paper cartridges were used old sol-

diers said that all the shots were apt to go off at once, whenthe chambers got hot, and they used the loading lever as a handhold for safety. Fine condition. Scarce.

44. "COSMOPOLITAN BREECH LOADING RIFLED CAR-BINE."

Cross patent of 1859. Calibre .50, made in Hamilton, Ohio.Similar to No. 281 but carrying a smaller shell.

Said to have been dug from a trench in the late Boer War andsupposed to have been used in the previous Boer War. Purchased in

1911 from the owner of Joyce's Cave, Bermuda.

Blued steel, metallic cartridge, rim fire, Triplett's Patent of

1864, marked "Meriden Mfg. Co., Meriden, Conn."The noted "Kentucky" (and so stamped) magazine carbine. Loads

from the front of butt, the barrel revolves on an axis parallel to the

barrel until it opens the magazine and loads. The Extractor is

worked by the rotation of the barrel. In Fine Condition ; Illus-trated in the Lowell Catalogue.

55. WATERS PATENT BREECH LOADING CARBINE.Brass mounts, combustible cartridge, made in Milbury, Mass.,

no date; stamped "A. H. Waters & Co., Milbury, Mass."Very rare ; not listed in the Lowell Catalgoue. Asa Waters of

Sutton (now Milbury) was a licensed private Armorer of the Gov-ernment in 1808 as one of the six most prominent gunmakers in thecountry. A Masonic Sign is cut near the butt of the stock.

barrel 1798. Date said to have been put on by owner. Gunsupposed to have been made about 1745. Checked grip, brassmounts, band replaced with wire; ivory tip to stock, no ramrod.

57. FAYETTEVILLE CONFEDERATE RIFLE. Dated 1863.C. S. A. Confederate States of America, marked on Shoul-

der. Brass mounts, percussion, calibre 58. Length 33 in.

The machinery for making rifles was moved from Harper's Ferryto Fayetteville, N. C, by the Confederate Government in 1861. Thedie used to stamp the eagle and "C. S. A." came from Harper's Ferry.The "U. S.", which was originally under the eagle, was cut out and"C. S. A." with the "S." inverted were "keyed" in.

58. GALLAGHER'S BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE.Combustible cartridge, all steel with wood butt only, Galla-

gher's Patent, July 17, 1860, and also marked "Richardson &Overman's Arms Co., Philadelphia, Pa."; operates from un-derneath and steel spring from butt-plate.

Name cut cn butt "Louis Southworth, Co. 3, 111. Cav." Very rareCivil War association piece.

Similar to the preceding.

60. GREENE'S PATENT RIFLE. 1857.

Bolt action, breech loader, blued steel barrel and mounts,stamped "Greene's Patent, Nov. 4, 1857," operated by a ham-mer under the barrel. Cal. .535, the cartridges had the bullets

in the rear, so there were always two bullets in the gun whenloaded, the rear bullet acting as a gas-check. Length of barrel

35 1/16 in., a few dents on stock, otherwise good condition.

61. J. H. HALL RIFLE.Harper's Ferry, 1839. Combustible Cartridge, Breech Load-

er with Bayonet. Centre fire ; ramrod.

62. HALL PERCUSSION BREECH LOADING CARBINEMUSKETOON.Made by J. H. Hall and dated 1839, ramrod, bayonet and

hooked catch.

Hall was the inventor of the breech-loader as early as 1811.

63. HARPER'S FERRY MUZZLE LOADING MUSKET.Percussion, "Harper's Ferry 1852" on lock; 40-inch barrel

dated 1847 with bayonet and ramrod. "T. C. Watts" cut in

the stock.

64. HARPER'S FERRY BREECH-LOADER.Dated 1832, Hall's patent, metallic cartridge, percussion,

made at Harper's Ferry in 1832; bayonet.

One of the very earliest breech loaders and the first to be patented

in the United States.

65. HARPER'S FERRY TAPE LOCK. Dated, 1857.

Muzzle loader, 40 inch octagon, dated 1857, brass butt-tang,

ramrod barrel.

66. HARPER'S FERRY MUSKET. Dated 1854.

Muzzle loader, brass mounts and patch-box, length 32 in.,

67. FIARPER'S FERRY U. S. TAPE LOCK RIFLE.Dated 1859, ramrod, length 33 in., patch-box.

69 JENKS' CARBINE. U. S. NAVY BREECH LOADING TAPE-LOCK PERCUSSION.Hammer on side. Made at Herkimer, New York by Reming-

ton, 1847, and so stamped. . Brass mounts.

Using a paper cartridge, and the side hammer cocks by opening

outward, the barrel is opened by drawing back the top lever.

"Col. Le Mat, Paris." Beautifully reblued to new condition.

Length 13 inches. Superposed barrels. The top one rifled,

about 40 cal., the lower, two inches shorter, about 16 gauge for

buckshot charge. A movable nose on hammer fires either

charge.

These revolvers were brought over by blockade runners during the

Civil War and sold to Confederate officers as high as $200 each.

In 1800 Lemuel Pomeroy (6th Generation of gunsmiths) moved to

Hall was originally from Yarmouth, Maine, and in 1816 he was sent

to Harper's Ferry to superintend the gun which the Government had

decided to adopt, where he continued making the Hall rifle until 1840.

Indian Territory, a half-breed Creek In-

dian, who was a desperado and bad mangenerally. He was captured finally byDeputy U. S. Marshal Wm. Hays, whoshot a hole in the magazine of Bruno'sgun in effecting his arrest. He was takento Ft. Smith, Ark., and executed March6, 1887.

Lock stamped "Robbins & Lawrence, Windsor, Vt. 1851,"

percussion, brass patch-box, blued steel barrel and lock, length

33 in.

Original condition and similar to the "Mississippi," also known as

the "Yerger," which was made at Harper's Ferry. The gun is rare

as many were altered to breech-loading in 1862.

With Sword Bayonet, marked "E. Whitney" and "N. Haven,1855;" 33 inch brass bound barrel, with brass patch-box andbrass-tipped ramrod, frightful dent in the stock.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

1. All bids to be per lot. They are executed free of charge

by the Walpole Galleries and the items are bought at the lowest

price permitted by competitive bids.

2. The highest bidder to be the buyer ; in case of disputed

bids the lot shall be resold, but the Auctioneer will use his judg-

ment as to the good faith of all claims and his decision will be final.

He may also reject any fractional or nominal bid calculated to delay

or injuriously affect the sale.

3. Buyers to give their names and addresses and to make

such cash payments on account as may be required, in default of

which the lots purchased to be immediately resold.

4. Goods bought to be removed at the close op the sale

If not so removed, they will be held at the risk of the purchaser and

these Galleries will not be responsible if such goods are lost, stolen,

damaged or destroyed. No deliveries will be made during the sale.

5. Terms Cash. If accounts are not paid at the conclusion

of the sale, or, in the case of absent buyers, when bills are rendered,

these Galleries reserve the right to dispose of the goods without no-

tice to the defaulting buyer and all costs of such re-sale will be

charged to the defaulter. This condition is without prejudice to the

rights of the Company to enforce the sale contract and collect the

amount due without such re-sale at its own option.

6. This catalogue has been compiled by a competent cata-

loguer ; the various lots offered are described with care and accuracy

and they will be sold not subject to return.

7. The Walpole Galleries, if requested, will forward purchases

at the buyer's risk and expense.
