What is the goal?• Supplyasufficientamountoflocaldatatoschools andschooldistrictsthatwillenableschoolstoestablish baselinedatatomonitorimprovementaswellassupport requiredforfundingopportunities.
• Provideascientificestimateofhealthandsocialindicators foryourschool.Thescientificestimateisbasedondrawinga randomsampletorepresentthepopulationof6th,8th,10th and12thgradersinDuPageCounty.
What are the benefits?Eachparticipatingschooliseligibletoreceiveareportspecifictotheirownstudents’responses.Thesereportsprovidecriticalinformationtoschooladministrators.Schooladministrators,inturn,canchoosetosharethisinformationwithpreventionprofessionals,schoolsupportpersonnel,and/orcommunityhealthorganizationsastheyworktoaddressavarietyofhealthandsocialissuesintheircommunities.
Theinformationprovidedfromtheschool-specificreportscanserveasbaselinedatatouseasschoolsmonitorprogressintheimportantareasof:schoolclimate,academicperformance,andoverallhealth.ItcanalsoprovideschoolofficialswithdataneededtoaddresstheincreasingconcernsofparentsandcommunitymembersaroundsubstanceuseamongteensinDuPageCounty.

TheIllinoisYouthSurvey(IYS)isaself-reportedadolescentsurveyadministratedinIllinoisschoolsandfundedentirelybytheIllinoisDepartmentofHumanServices(IDHS)bienniallysince1990.It’sdesignedtogatherinformationaboutavarietyofhealthandsocialindicatorsincludingsubstanceusepatternsandattitudesofIllinoisyouththatdirectlyimpacttheirabilitytolearnandsucceed.
What is IYS?
Why is the data important to schools and community health organizations? Datacanalsobeusedtodeterminetheeffectivenessofschools’currentinterventionsaswellastodesign,fundandimplementpreventionprogramingthatisspecificallytailoredtomeetanindividualschool’sneeds.Dataprovidedfromthesurveycanbeusedtomonitorprogress,aswellastosupporteffortstobringadditionalresourcestotheschools.SchoolscanalsocomparetheirdatatocountyandstateIYSdata.
Are the IYS data results confidential?• Theidentityoftheyouthwhoparticipateisnotcollected.
• Theschoolreportisonlysharedwiththatschooladministrator.
What happens with the IYS data?• Anindividualschoolreportisgeneratedandsentsolelytothe schoolapproximately4to6weeksaftersurveyingiscompleted.If therearelessthan10studentsatanyparticipatinggrade,noschool resultscanbegeneratedforthatgrade.
• County-levelreportsaremadeavailableifatleasttwoschool districtsparticipateatanygradelevelwithinagivencountysoasto maintainschoolconfidentiality.
What is the cost?ThesurveyisavailabletoallpublicandprivateschoolsinDuPageCountyatnocostwhenimplementedduringthestatewidesurveyingyears.
How is the survey administered?• Online
• Paperandpencilformat
• Thesurveycanbecompletedinoneclassperiodof30-45minutes.
How do schools and community partners use IYS data?
TheIllinoisYouthSurvey(IYS)providestheDuPageCountyHealthDepartment(DCHD)withvaluablecounty-leveldataregardingriskbehaviorsthatimpactthehealthofadolescents.Thiscounty-leveldataisoneofthefewresourcesthatallowstheDCHDtodevelopstrategicplanstomaintain,improveandmonitorthehealthstatusofyouthinourcountyovertime.Thesurveyisscientificallyvalidatedandisofferedtotheschoolsatnocharge.DCHDisworkingwiththeBehavioralHealthCollaborativeandtheFORWARDObesityPreventionCoalitiontoincreasethenumberofschoolsparticipatinginIYS2012.Thisdatawillprovidearichresourcetoinformourcounty-widepreventioninitiatives,andwillprovideschoolswithdatatouseintheiron-goingeffortstomeetthechangingneedsofstudents.
