FINAL ROUND: This is Illinois Wesleyan’s sixth appearance in the semifinal round of four teams … The Titans won the championship in
1997 with third place finishes in 1996, 2001 and 2006… Third place was not contested in 2012. NCAA TOURNEY HISTORY: Illinois Wesleyan is making its fifth straight and 23rd overall appearance in the 31 years of NCAA affiliation since dropping out of NAIA competition (after 1982-83)…Titan teams are 53-22 (.707) in the NCAA tourney and were 30-19 in NAIA postseason play from 1948-83 … Illinois Wesleyan teams have made 11 appearances in round of 8 in the NCAA Division III tournament (1986, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2014) and this is IWU’s 17th appearance in the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III tournament…In the 1990s, IWU made the Division III tournament nine times and six years in a row (1994-99). D-III LEADER: IWU has a record of 53-22 (.707) in a total of 23 NCAA Division III appearances, the most in Division III postseason. Second is Wittenberg, who has a Division III postseason record of 51-27 in 27 tournament years and were ousted by Calvin in round one, 66-51. In third place is Franklin & Marshall with a record of 43-28 in 23 appearances and not playing in 2014. HALLOWED GROUND: Illinois Wesleyan has 27 wins and, in 105 years of men's basketball, only two other Titan teams have reached that total - the 1997 team that was 29-2 and NCAA Division III national champions, and the 1996 squad that was 28-3 and finished in third place nationally. 20-GAME WINNERS: The Titans are 20-game winners for the fifth year in a row and for the 24th time in school history and the 23rd time in the last 49 seasons... This is the first time in school history for a stretch of five years with 20+ wins. Twice before have teams won 20+ in four straight years (1995-98 and 2003-06)…IWU has its seventh straight winning season after the 2006-07 team finished 11-14. Prior to that, IWU enjoyed 17 straight seasons with a record of .500 or better. The 2001-02 team was 12-12 and the last sub-.500 season was 1988-89 (12-14). TOURNEY TEAMS: Illinois Wesleyan had a 6-2 record against their five opponents who made the NCAA tournament (2-1 vs. Wheaton, 1-1 vs. Augustana, and 1-0 against Washington U., Wilmington and Hope). NCAA STATISTICS: Illinois Wesleyan ranks No. 4 in the national Division III statistics (through March 16) with a .415 3-point field goal percentage, No. 6 with 297 3-pointers made, No. 6 in scoring margin (+14.7), No. 15 in field goal percentage (.498) and No. 8 in assists (485).
HEAD COACH RON ROSE: In his eighth season as head coach at his alma mater, Ron Rose (Illinois Wesleyan ‘88) has compiled a 156-71 record (.687) and a 72-40 mark (.643) in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin…He was the CCIW “Coach of the Year” in both 2014 and 2013… In 2013 he was also the co-winner of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Midwest Region “Coach of the Year” and co-winner of the Division III "Coach of the Year Award" for the state by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, marking the fourth straight year as either a winner or co-winner of the honor… He was the 2012 Midwest Region “Coach of the Year” by D3hoops.com … Rose is the third winningest coach in IWU history by victories. The all-time leader at the school is Dennie Bridges with a record of 667-319 in 36 seasons (1965-2001). Bridges was Rose’s
collegiate coach…In Bridges’ first eight seasons he had a record of 131-78 (.627) …As a guard, Rose played on teams that went to three NCAA Division III tournaments at Illinois Wesleyan and were 5-3 in the tournament in 1986, 1987 and 1988.
ANDREW ZIEMNIK: The senior forward was named to the first team of the D3hoops.com all-region squads…He was chosen to the first team of the all-CCIW squads for the second straight year … He ranks No. 42 all-time in scoring at IWU with 978 points and is No. 20 with 511 rebounds … He is 17th all-time with 91 3-point field goals … Finished eighth in the league in rebounds (5.8) and 11th in scoring (11.9) … Has led team in scoring in 12 games including vs. Dickinson on March 15, the first time since Jan. 29 (Millikin) … Has been team top rebounder in 12 games … Has scored in double digits in 20 games and has had five double-doubles in points-rebounds … Has six double figure rebound games … Played in all 31 games for national semifinal team in 2012
(averaged 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds) … Was a second team all-region selection as a junior … Has 3.42 grade-point average as a business (finance) major and was on ballot for Capital One Academic All-America®. VICTOR DAVIS: The senior forward was a first team all-CCIW selection as he finished this season tied for 12th in scoring with an 11.8 average and was fourth in rebounds (7.1), ninth in field goal percentage (.496, 59 of 119) and sixth with an .833 free throw percentage (35 of 42) … Has been team’s leading scorer in two games and leading rebounder in 16 games… Has scored in double figures in 19 games with four double-doubles in points-rebounds … Has had double figure rebounds in five games… He is No. 41 all-time at IWU with 982 career points … Davis is No. 19 in career rebounds at IWU with 514 and No. 26 with 72 3-point field goals … Played and started in 31 games for national semifinal team in 2012 (averaged 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds).
DYLAN OVERSTREET: The junior point guard was named to the second team of the all-CCIW squads as he led the CCIW in assists for the second straight season (4.14) and was second in assist/turnover ratio (1.45). He was sixth in field goal accuracy (.516, 47 of 91), 20th in rebounds (3.9) and 18th in scoring (10.1) … Ranks No. 16 in IWU career assists with 254 … Missed three games early with knee injury and has started all 26 in which he has played … Twice chosen as CCIW “Player of the Week” this season … Has led team in scoring three of last nine games and five times overall … Has scored in double figures in 13 games and had double-double vs. Elmhurst with 10 points and career-high 11 assists … His 118 assists this year is tied for 18th in IWU season … Played in 11 games for national semifinal team in 2012 (44 total minutes).
JORDAN NELSON: The sharpshooting junior guard transferred to IWU from Division I Evansville prior to season … Missed five games with ankle injury early season and has played in 26 games … Leads team with 63 3-pointers (13th most in an IWU season) and has attempted 157 (14th most in an IWU single season) … Has led team in scoring nine times, including four of the last six games and six of last 10 … Has reached double figures in 13 contests … The 63 3-pointers is already No. 29 in IWU career records.
PAT SODEMANN: The junior guard has started all 31 games this season … Is shooting .500 from 3-point range, currently sixth best in an IWU single season … Has 90 career 3-pointers, No. 18 in IWU records … Has led team in scoring three times and in rebounds once… Has scored in double figures 16 times .. His 55 3-pointers is tied for 21st in an IWU single season.
MICHAEL MAYBERGER: Starter in 12 of 31 games … The versatile senior has scored in double figures in 13 games, including a midseason stretch of eight in a row … Has led the team in scoring in one game and in rebounding in three games … No. 33 in IWU records with 54 career 3-pointers. ERIC DORTCH: Starter in one of 31 games … The senior has scored in double figures in four games and has been the team’s leading rebounder in four games … Played in all 31 and started three of the games as a sophomore for 2012 national semifinalists. MIKE MARIETTI: Sophomore who has been a starter in seven of 22 games in which he has played, including the last three … Has scored in double figures in two games, including career-high 12 in 2014 NCAA second round win over St. Norbert … Injury kept him with limited (one game) action until the 11th game of the season. NICK ANDERSON: The senior has started 12 games and played in 25 … Has a 3.97 grade-point average as a business (marketing) major… One of 118 nominees for 2014 Allstate NABC Good Works Teams®, an award that recognizes college basketball student-athletes who have made significant contributions to the greater good of their communities through volunteerism and civic service… Was selected to the NABC "Honors Court" for academic excellence as a junior …In 2012 he was the winner of the "Elite 89" award, given to the player with the highest GPA involved in the NCAA Division III men's final four round … Won a $500 grant and matching funds from State Farm Insurance to start Habitat for Humanity's local Playhouse Project … Has been on the leadership team of the Death Resurrection Life (DRL) campus ministry since his sophomore year and has been a volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters since his freshman year. IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR: There are some interesting family connections for some IWU players – Brady Zimmer’s brother (Jordan) is the school's all-time leader in 3-point field goals made and played in the national semifinal in 2012. Brady’s father (Doug), uncle (Ron) and grandfather (Duane Sampen) all were athletes at Illinois Wesleyan. Doug was once IWU record holder in 400 and was track MVP for three years in the 1980s. Brady’s sister Maddison is a member of the IWU women's track team … Trevor Seibring’s parents, Scott and Stacy, are IWU graduates and Scott is the school’s Director of Financial Aid. His sister, Katy, was the "Most Valuable Player" of the 2013 Titan women’s team and was a first team all-CCIW selection. His cousin, Spencer, is also a freshman member of the IWU basketball team. Uncle Steve and aunt Sue are IWU grads and Steve is school's Associate Vice President for Gift Planning. His cousin Sean attended IWU as did his aunt, Jennifer Morgan … Pat Sodemann’s brother, Buddy, was a graduate assistant coach at IWU from 2010-12 … Andrew Ziemnik’s sister Katie played basketball for the Titans. 3-POINT FIELD GOALS: The Titans have made a 3-point field goal in 521 straight games…Salisbury holds the Division III record at 577 prior to this season, dating back to Nov. 25, 1986… Since the 3-pointer was adopted in 1986-87, Nevada-Las Vegas has made at least one in all its 840 games (through November 2012)…Entering 2013-14, UNLV, Vanderbilt and Princeton were the only three schools to have made a 3-pointer in every game since the line was implemented. IWU BASKETBALL ALUM: Jack Sikma is a 1977 Illinois Wesleyan graduate and the school’s all-time leading scorer (2,272 points) and rebounder (1,405). In his final three seasons at IWU, the teams were a combined 71-20 and played Division I opponents Bradley, Florida, Jacksonville and DePaul his senior year … His No. 44 is the only retired jersey at IWU … Selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the eighth overall pick of the 1977 NBA Draft, he spent 14 seasons in the NBA, averaging 15.6 points and 9.8 rebounds in 1,107 games with Seattle and Milwaukee. A seven-time NBA All-Star, Sikma played on the 1979 NBA championship team and was also named to the 1977-78 NBA All-Rookie Team and earned 1981-82 NBA All-Defense Second Team accolades. He is now in his third year as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves after being an assistant with the Houston Rockets and the Sonics. Sikma retired from playing after the 1990-91 season and his No. 43 jersey was retired by the franchise on Nov. 21, 1992 … Sikma was an Illinois Wesleyan basketball teammate of Ed Moore, former baseball pitcher in the Chicago Cubs and Buckley Dutch Masters organizations.
CCIW CHAMPIONS: The Titans went 12-2 and won the regular season league title for the second straight season. It is the school's 29th league title and 23rd men's hoops championship won outright … In CCIW team statistics, Illinois Wesleyan led the CCIW in scoring (83.1), scoring margin (+15.4), field goal percentage (.504), 3-point field goal percentage (.419), field goal percentage defense (.419), opponent 3-point field goal
percentage (.338), rebounding (37.4), assists (15.3), assist/turnover ratio (1.30) and 3-pointers per game (9.21). THE CCIW IN THE NCAA: Heading into the final round of the 2014 NCAA tournament, teams from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin have an NCAA Division III tournament record of 140-71 (.663), including a 7-2 record in 2014…With Wheaton, Augustana and Illinois Wesleyan in the field, it was the seventh straight season the CCIW has had more than one team competing at the national level… CCIW teams have accounted for six NCAA Division III championships (Illinois Wesleyan
in 1997 and North Park in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1985, and 1987), two second-place finishes (Augustana in 1981 and 1993), and six third-place finishes (Illinois Wesleyan in 2006, 2001 and 1996, Carthage in 2002, and Augustana in 1975 and 1976)…Prior to being in Division III, Wheaton won the Division II title in 1957 and finished fourth in 1958. MORE CCIW: Now in its 68th year, the CCIW has sponsored men’s basketball as a championship sport since the conference began play in 1946-47. Illinois Wesleyan has dominated the league over the years, winning or sharing 29 titles in 67 years. Augustana has 13 championships, including three titles in a row from 2006-09. Millikin and Wheaton have claimed nine championships each, and North Park was won six times. Carthage has won five CCIW championships, North Central has won five league crowns, and Elmhurst won its first-ever league basketball title in 2001. ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS: Illinois Wesleyan has had 24 Academic All-Americans® in men’s basketball, a total higher than any other college or university. UCLA and Kansas are tied for second with 20, followed by Indiana (18), Duke (17), and Millikin (15) with Gonzaga, Northwestern, Brigham Young and Notre Dame all at 14…IWU has a total of 116 Academic All-America berths earned by Titan student-athletes since the program began in 1970, a total eclipsed by only 11 other schools, including Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Stanford.
BEHIND ENEMY LINES…
WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER - No. 3 Whitewater (27-4) makes their way to the Final Four after defeating Emory University, 74-51, at the Stevens Point sectional final. The Warhawks went 13-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and lost to UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC conference tournament final. On their road to the Final Four, Whitewater defeated Northwestern (Minn.), Augustana and Texas-Dallas before playing Emory in the round of eight. Whitewater is making its fifth appearance in the Final Four, and was the NCAA Division III national champion in 1984, 1989, and 2012.
The Warhawks head to Salem winning 13 of their last 14 games. Whitewater has four players averaging double digit points per game, led by junior guard K.J. Evans (16.8) and senior forward Reggie Hearn (12.6). Evans and Hearn are also the team’s leading rebounders with 8.3 and 5.4, respectively. The Warhawks outscore their opponents 78.8-60.8, and hold a 35.8-29.0 advantage on the boards.
AMHERST - Defending NCAA Division III champion Amherst (27-3) has won 11 straight games and returns to the Final Four after beating Morrisville State, 84-74, in the sectional final on their home court. This is the sixth Final Four appearance for the Lord Jeffs, who have won national championships in 2007 and 2013 and were runners-up in 2008. In 2006, Amherst lost the consolation game to Illinois Wesleyan 71-68. The Jeffs went 9-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), and defeated Williams in the NESCAC conference tournament, 93-82. Amherst has not lost since January 31 (Coe), and was one of two
teams to receive a first-round bye in the national tournament. The team is led by senior guard Aaron Toomey, who recorded his 2000th career point in the win over Morrisville State. Toomey, the two-time NESCAC Player of the Year, is averaging 20.5 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Connor Green averages 17.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and senior Tom Killian averages 15 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Amherst has played Williams three times this season and has won all three. The Jeffs outscore and outrebound their opponents 84.5-70.9 and 39.0-33.9, respectively.
WILLIAMS - No. 9 Williams (27-4) handily beat No. 17 Mary Washington by a score of 79-46, Saturday March 15, in Fredericksburg, VA. The win propels Williams to a Final Fourth berth and a rematch against rival Amherst, to whom the Ephs have lost three times this season. This marks Williams’ seventh trip to Salem, where the Ephs won a National Championship in 2003 and finished runner-up in 2004 and 2010. Williams finished the regular season with a record of 22-3, 9-1 in the NESCAC, and lost to Amherst in the conference tournament, 93-82. Before defeating Mary Washington, Williams beat Mitchell College (CT), Gordon College (MA), and No. 13 Albertus
Magnus (CT). The Ephs are led by senior center Michael Mayer, who is averaging 18.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per contest, as well as freshman forward Duncan Robinson, averaging 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds, and junior guard Daniel Wohl, averaging 13 points and 5.9 rebounds. As a team the Ephs outscore their opponents 84.3 to 71.9, but are outrebounded 36 to 35.6. Williams enters the Final Four having won 14 of its last 15.
