IntroductionDouglas-Hart Nature Center has offered quality environmental educationprograms year-round to children and adults for the past 11 years . In thattime, an average of 10,000 individuals per year have receivced a formalprogram regarding conservation of Illinois ; natural resources and good landstewardship .
To further our educational mission, the Douglas-hart Nature Center plantedan additional 5 acres of prairie . This 5 acre plot connects a 13 acrewetland/mesic prairie to a 13 acre mesic prairie thus providing a 31 acrewetland-prairie complex .
This 31 acre prairie provides valuable habitat and affords excellentopportunities for staff to discuss issues such as grassland size, edge effect,area sensitive grassland birds, and land stewardship .
Materials&MethodsThe area existed previously as an abandoned field . The 5 acre plot wasmowed on 20 May 2003 and then sprayed with a 2% RoundUp mixture on27 May 2003 to kill existing vegetation . A no-till drill was utilized to plantthe grass and forb seed on June 9, 2003 .
ResultsResults of the planting will not be apparent immediately . The planting willbe monitored over the next year and undesireable species will be removed .A spring burn is planned for 2004 .
The eventual benefit of creating a 31 acre contiguous prairie will realizedover the next 5 years .
