Between the Lines is a FREElecture series presented by the faculty members of theEnglish, Humanities, and Language Studies Departmentat Illinois Central College.Check out this season’s offer-ings and see if we live up toour mission statement, whichis to serve our community byapplying a scholarly lens toculturally relevant literary topics. That’s right . . . we’regoing to aim our literary magnifying glass at some ofthe stories you’re reading, watching, and thinking about.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Topicideas? Email us at [email protected]. We’d love tohear from you!

Non-Fiction That Reads like Fiction Books based on real people and events can beas thrilling, exciting, scary, or funny as any novel.Authors such as Erik Larson (The Devil in theWhite City), Jon Krakauer (Into the Wild), LauraHillenbrand (Unbroken), and Haven Kimmel (AGirl Named Zippy) tell true life stories that rivalfiction books of James Patterson or Helen Field-ing. What makes these books so compelling? This presentation explores “page-turning” non-fiction in a variety of genres, including the ICC2015-16 “One Book, One College” title, March,by Representative John Lewis. Bring your list ofsuggested non-fiction for the rest of the group! February 1

Sun, Moon, and Stars: The Remarkable Histories of Superman, Batman, and Wonder WomanNo other fictional characters in history can makethe same boast as Superman, Batman, andWonder Woman. Each has featured in new stories in their own monthly publications for overthree quarters of a century. Though the result ofan American art form – the comic book – and themythologies that have grown out of it, no otherpopular icons are as truly, instantly recognizablethe world over as these three characters. Drawingon studies of mythology by Joseph Campbelland Carl Jung, this presentation will trace the origins and histories, changing interpretations, and cultural significance of these archetypes ofthe sun, the moon, and stars. April 4 2:30 pm East Peoria 212C/D Andrew Bonvicini

What Should I Read?Finding the time to read for pleasure can be achallenge during the school year. In fact, with our numerous entertainment options (Netflix,YouTube, etc.) it can be hard to carve out time to read at all. However, book choices abound tosuit a variety of tastes – fiction, fantasy, biogra-phy, or horror. So, with summer around the corner why not commit to reading at least onebook for pleasure, relaxation, and even perhapsenlightenment? Please join ICC faculty and staffas they share their choices for summer reading. May 3 7:00 pm North, Arbor Auditorium Margot Vance and ICC Faculty/Staff
