What’s the IssueRecently, as a part of everyday youth culture, many young people are starting to download music illegally instead of actually buying them. This has a lot of implications socially and economically. Economically because the global music market is decreasing as a result of music piracy. Socially because there are a lot less musicians willing to become professional because they are deterred by the possibility of illegal music downloads.

What does this mean for the music artists?

•They don’t have enough money to lead a sustainable lifestyle•Some of them don’t become full time musicians.•They rely on live tours in order to generate an income as opposed to music sales.•They are less people wanting to become music artists over all

What effects does it have on you!

•You will have less music to choose from.•There will be less artists available•The niche music genres would die out (classical music, folk, jazz)•You would only have cliché pop music available

Why it’s not morally right

• Stealing is stealing. Everyone knows that it is wrong. Why is downloading music alright?

• Is shoplifting a CD different than downloading it illegally?

• Shouldn’t we support the musicians we admire by buying their music?

• What would that musician do if they knew you steal their music on a regular basis?

• Just because everyone else is doing it does not make it alright.

What you can do to help? You can help resolve the global illegal music download problem by:

1. Using money to buy music instead of pirating so that the musicians can benefit from their art work.

2. Try telling your mates to buy music more so they can tell their mates and so on...

3. Delete peer to peer sharing software from your computer so you won’t be tempted

4. Try to motivate some of your friends to become musicians in order to reverse the decline in new music talent
