Aurora Crime Rate The crime rate in Aurora has skyrocketed. There have been three daytime burglar-ies within the CCWNA boundaries since March 1 of this year. There was an attempted break-in at the liquor store near the Yale Avenue/I-225 overpass: fortunately, the suspect was recorded on the store’s surveillance system. Based on the Aurora Police’s inability to provide the level of protection we’d like to have, it’s up to us to keep our eyes on our neighborhood. If you see something suspicious, please alert the authorities! With the anticipated increase in foot traffic and parking with the opening of RTD’s Light Rail extension, we need to be aware of our surroundings. Please don’t attempt to personally check things out: leave that to those trained to do so. Bottom line, we are our own first line of defense! Let’s keep CCWNA one of the best places to live.
— Jim Hufschmidt, President CCWNA, CCWNA.org
Mother’s Day: A Short History The second Sunday in May was officially proclaimed “Mother’s Day” by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. But it had a long history before then. In the 19th century, Anna Reeves Jarvis organized Mother’s Work Day to heighten awareness of local sanitation issues in her home state of West Virginia, and then expanded her efforts to improve health and sanitation during the Civil War. Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) promoted a “Mother’s Day for Peace” in 1872. On May 9, 1905, Anna Reeve Jarvis’s daughter, Anna Marie Jarvis, privately com-memorated her mother’s death two years before. Then, in 1908, Jarvis organized a larger celebration of motherhood at her church in Grafton, West Virginia, with more than 400 children and their mothers participating. After that, Jarvis began working for a national
day of recognition for mothers. West Virginia rec-ognized Mother’s Day first, in 1912, followed by Wilson’s proclamation in 1914. Ironically, the younger Jarvis never had any children of her own.
“When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always
has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.”

Try These Year-Round Common Cold Remedies You can catch a cold any time of the year, no matter what the weather is. Although you can’t cure it, you can relieve its symptoms with some simple remedies. Try these: • Honey.Honeymixedwithteaorwarmlemonwatercanrelievecoughingand
sore throat. • Zinc. Zinc supplements taken within the first few days of having a cold can
shorten your illness and could prevent a cold in the first place. • Hotliquids.Hotteaorwatercanloosenupcongestioninyourchestandsinuses. • Saltwater.Evidencesuggeststhatrinsingyourmouthwithsaltywatercanclear
up nasal congestion and unclog your sinuses. • Vitamin C. Evidence that vitamin C can help you avoid or shorten colds is
mixed, although research does hint that it may be effective for those with a vitamin C deficiency.
Take A Fresh Approach To Solving problems • Rephrase the question. The wayyou frame the problem may limit your options. Teach yourself to expand the scope. Instead of, “How can we throw a great birthday party for Ted?” Ask, “What can we do to make this a memorable birth-day?” • Look for bad ideas. Seeking per-fect solutions can put too much pressure on your creativity. Give yourself a break and try coming up with some bad ideas. You’ll get them out of the way quickly, and sometimes a bad idea can lead to something new and exciting. • Challengeyourassumptions.Takea hard look at your basic beliefs about the situation. Is the customer really always right? Is the lowest price necessarily the best deal? Turning your assumptions on their heads can suggest a different direc-tion to go in.

New Trash ProgramLies Waste Systems
Lies Waste Systems is a locally owned and fam-ily operated trash company. CCWNA has partnered
with Lies Waste Systems to bring our residents a low cost trash and recycling program that also gives back to our community. For every resident that utilizes this program, CCWNA will receive a contribution of $2 per month to go towards neighborhood improve-ments and projects. We believe that this partnership will go a long way towards improving our community while also saving residents money on trash and recycling collection services. Other advantages include supporting local business and allowing individual residents the flexibility to choose the services that they want and/or need. The pricing for this program is listed below: * $39 every three months for weekly trash service. $6 every
three months will be added to the bill as a CCWNA contri-bution, which will be transferred to CCWNA once payment is received. Total cost will be $45 every three months.
* Optional Add-On Service: $6 every three months for biweekly recycling service.
* Optional Add-On Service: $3 every three months for (1) 96 gallon cart rental.

National Military Appreciation Month As designated by Congress, National Military Appreciation Month celebrates the history of our armed forces and recognizes the brave people who have served in every branch of military service. It also allows Americans to educate each generation on the historical impact of our military through community participation.
Give Mom Something Different This Mother’s Day Doesn’t your mother deserve more than a generic greeting card on Mother’s Day? Here are some ideas for a personal, thoughtful gift she’ll treasure: • A photo album. Fill it with photos that mean
something to her: pictures of your family, pets, and places you’ve lived, as well as quotations, ticket stubs, post cards, etc.
• A tribute video. It doesn’t have to be long or involved. Use your digital camera to record a sincere message. If you have the resources, mix in a montage of photos or her favorite songs.
• A special class. Enroll her in a seminar on something she loves or has always wanted to do but has never taken the time to pursue. Do some research so it’s a really good fit. Give a gift that goes along with it: A sketchpad if you’re sign-ing her up for an art class, for example.
Exercise: More Isn’t Necessarily Better Losing weight is just a matter of exercising, right? Actually, that may not be the case, according to a study of exercise and weight loss reported on the CNN web-site. Researchers looked at 332 adults in the U.S., Jamaica, and Africa, measuring their activity level over a week. The volunteers displayed a variety of exercise levels from sedentary to active. Although those who exercised and were active more burned away more calories than the others, their activity tended to hit a plateau—after a certain level, more exercise didn’t produce more weight loss. Switching exercises helped a little, since using dif-ferent muscles can make your body use more energy. But in the long run, a combination of exercise and a reduced-calorie diet may be your best bet for losing those unwanted pounds.
Protect Your Children’s Eyes Eye injuries can happen at any time if children aren’t careful. Protect your kids’ eyesight with these suggestions from the University of Michigan Health System: • Don’tletchildrenthrowobjectsateachother. • Enforce a “no running” rule for scissors and other
objects that are sharp, long, or pointed. • Store cleaning products and other chemicals out of
your children’s reach. • Keepclotheshangersinthecloset. • Set an example by using eye protection yourself
whenever needed. • Scheduleregulareyeexamsforyourchildren.
