Dopo Praiano la strada si allarga, i muri diventano più alti e i paesi finiscono. Ti sem-bra di perderti, ti chiedi se non hai sbagliato direzione. Così ti fermi, attraversi la stradae ti affacci oltre il muro, dalla parte del mare. Se il punto è di quelli giusti, avrai diPositano una visione abbagliante, misteriosa e fantastica: sarà la tua stella polare. Tirimetti in cammino e dopo qualche chilometro ci arrivi. Percorri un lungo nastro cheavvolge le case, al termine del quale la strada comincia a scendere in una specie di vor-tice fino alla Piazza dei Mulini. Pochi metri a piedi e sei sulla Spiaggia Grande. Ti giri ecapisci che ti trovi come su un palcoscenico, circondato da grappoli di case che fannoda scenografia al grande spettacolo della vita. Devi solo scegliere se sei spettatore, pro-tagonista o comparsa. Dipende solo da te: il mito non impone nulla.

After Praiano the road widen, the walls become higher and no other villages can be seen. Youfeel as though you are lost, you ask yourself whether you may have taken the wrong direction.So you stop, cross the road and lean over the wall, to look at the sea. If you have stopped atthe right point, you will enjoy a dazzling, mysterious and fantastic view of Positano: it willbecome your guiding star. You start moving again and after a few kilometres you arrive. Youwalk along a winding road enveloping the house like a ribbon and at the end of it the roadstarts going down like a spiral until you reach Piazza dei Mulini. A few metres down you findyourself on the big beach, you turn round and you have the sensation of being on a stage, sur-rounded by clusters of houses which make the setting for the biggest show of life. You then haveto choose to be a spectator a protagonist or just a walk-on. It is only up to you: myth does notimpose on you.

La struttura urbanistica di Positano è fattadi terrazze, di piccole vie strette e sinuose, diabitazioni arrampicate a mezza costa.

Una sintesi di stile moresco e bizantino.I rioni più antichi disegnano un’architettura con-traddistinta dai battuti a lapillo, dai tipici intona-ci a calce, da piccole cupole che raccoglievano leacque per le cisterne, che si contrappongono aquella maestosa della Chiesa di S. MariaAssunta. Il bianco assoluto delle case e i colorivivaci delle ceramiche. Grazie ai suoi traffici verso il Medio Oriente e allenavi che solcavano il Mediterraneo, Positano siarricchì enormemente, tanto da meritare l’ap-pellativo di "Montagna d’Oro". A quell'epocarisalgono le belle dimore settecentesche, veri eproprio gioielli in stile barocco.

The structure of Positano consists of terraces, littlenarrow winding roads, and houses climbing thehill side. It is a synthesis of Moresque and Byzantine style.The oldest quarters show an architecture charac-terized by lapillus concrete pavements, the typicallime plasters, the small cupolas which once collect-ed water for reservoirs, opposing themselves to themajestic dome of the Church of Our Lady of theAssumption, the only white colour of the housesand the bright colours of ceramic tiles. Thanks to its trade with the Middle East and tothe ships sailing the Mediterranean Sea, Positanoenriched itself so much that it was named “GoldenMountain”. At that time its beautiful seventeethcentury residences date back, they are real jewelsin Baroque style.

Positano is probably the oldest place on the Coastof Amalfi, with anthropological settlements datingback to the upper Paleolithic age, its origin is lostbetween myth and history. The name of this coast village, which probablyderives from the Phoenician word Pesitan meaningNeptune, is also linked to the legend telling thatduring a storm some fugitives sailing on a sailercoming from the East and transporting a sacredicon, heard a voice saying “posa posa (put downput down)” and interpreted those words as being

the will of the Virgin Mary who wanted them toland at that place where then a Church devoted toher was built. The Church of Our Lady of theAssumption which today opens on piazza FlavioGioia, and is decorated by precious mosaics byMimmo Paladino, boasts a picturesque yellow andgreen majolica tile dome. Inside it the famous BlackMadonna with Child of Byzantine origin can beadmired, as well as the reliquary bust of St. Vito,one of the most important works of the Neapolitangoldsmith’s art. After being a big rival of the SeaRepublic of Amalfi for the supremacy of sea trade inthe Mediterranean and after having overcome thedark period of the Norman, Swabian and Angevindomination, during the 18th century and theBourbon domination, Positano conquered thecommercial supremacy in the Reign of the TwoSicilies. As a very famous tourist resort, Positanohas been, since the Nineteenth century, country ofadoption of Italian and foreign artists belonging tothe world of ballet, literature, painting and music.

La villa romana portata alla luce durante ilavori alla Piazza Flavio Gioia ed alle cripte dellaChiesa di S. Maria Assunta è stata probabil-mente costruita per qualche personaggio dellaclasse senatoriale romana. È visibile un settomurario in opus reticolatum, decorato da unacornice in stucco e da splendidi affreschi policro-mi che ritraggono un ippocampo, un’aquila, unpegaso e due amorini. Le raffigurazioni sonoinquadrate da raffinati sfondi architettonici, fracui spiccano l’architrave classico da cui si eleva ilcavalluccio marino ed il soffitto cassettonato: uninsieme animato dalla gamma cromaticaincentrata sul rosso pompeiano, sull’azzurro edil giallo ocra.

Le strutture ipogee si collocano in aree e suquote differenti sotto la Chiesa di S. MariaAssunta. La prima struttura, posta in coinciden-za dell’attuale Oratorio si compone di due spazi:uno rettangolare, con volta a botte ribassata eabside, lungo le cui pareti si allineano 65 sedili

funebri in muratura; il secondo, stretto e lungo,anch’esso con volte a botte, vede la presenza divasche in muratura, ex ossari, e di un accesso aun antico luogo di sepoltura sotto la navata cen-trale della chiesa, in corrispondenza della qualesi apriva una botola che coincide con un pozzoin muratura. Tra i materiali emersi vi sono lemaioliche dell’originario pavimento settecente-sco della Chiesa Madre. L’ambiente di epocamedievale, collocato al di sotto dell’abside dellaChiesa Madre, un tempo utilizzato per funzionireligiose, è caratterizzato da quattro volte a bottee un’abside con due piccole volte a crociera. Sullato sinistro una finestra monofora murata,lungo la curva absidale destra sedili funebri dimuratura e una porta oltre la quale sale unascala, attualmente chiusa in alto da una lastradi marmo scolpito che costituiva l’originario pas-saggio di collegamento con la chiesa. In questoambiente sono state messe in luce delle colonnenei pilastri di fondazione della cupola.

The roman villa brought to light during theworks carried out at Piazza Flavio Gioia and to thecrypts of the parish church of our Lady of theAssumptions was probably built for a personalitybelonging to the Roman Senatorial class. A wallsect can be seen in the opus reticolatum, it is deco-rated with a stucco cornice and splendid poly-chrome frescoes representing a hyppocampus, aneagle, a pegasus and two amorinos. Portrayals areframed by fine architectural backgrounds, amongwhich there are the classical architrave from whichthe sea horse rises, and the coffered ceiling: thewhole is enlivened by the chromatic range based onPompeian red, blue and ocre yellow colours.

The hypogeum structures are situated in dif-ferent areas and at different levels below the Churchof our Lady of the Assumption. The first structure,situated just below the present parish youth club,consists of two rooms: one is rectangular shaped,with a reduced barrel vault and an apse, and 65funeral masonry seats arranged in a line against

its walls; the other, narrow and long, also having abarrel vault, contains masonry basins, formercharnel houses, and an access to an old burialplace below the central nave of the church, next towhich a trap door opened where there was amasonry well. Among the materials found thereare majolica findings belonging to the originaleighteenth century floor of the Cathedral. Theroom dating back to the Middle Ages, situatedbelow the apse of the Cathedral, was once used forservices, it is characterized by four barrel vaults andan apse with two cross vaults. On the left side thereis a masonry single-lancet window, along the rightapse curve there are two funeral masonry seatsand a door after which a staircase goes up, it ispresently closed on its top by a sculpted marblesheet which once represented the original linkingpassage to the church. In this room some columnsin the foundation pilasters of the cupola have beenbrought to life.

Dalla Spiaggia Grande, Positano apparecome una piramide di case che si arram-picano verso il cielo. Ad est si aprono le

spiaggette di Laurito, San Pietro, Arienzo,Fiumicello, La Porta, Torre Sponda, immersenella vegetazione rigogliosa e di grande sugge-stione. Sul lato occidentale del litorale una stra-dina pedonale che costeggia la roccia conducealla spiaggia di Fornillo. La delimitano due torri,la Torre di Fornillo o Clavel e la Torre Trasita,costruite nel Cinquecento per proteggere la costada incursioni nemiche. Da qui via mare si pos-sono raggiungere le belle spiagge di Remmese,Scogli Piani e Cavone.Li Galli, le tre isole rocciose e solitarie di GalloLungo, la Rotonda e dei Briganti che si specchia-no nel mare limpido di fronte a Positano, furono,secondo gli antichi, abitati dalle sirene, dal cantoinsidioso e seducente per i naviganti.Frequentate da Tiberio, protette dagli Angioinicon una Torre per scoraggiare i predoni, questeisole, dall’indiscutibile fascino, sono state perultimo abitate dal coreografo Leonide Massinee dal ballerino Rudolph Nureyev.

From the big beach (Spiaggia Grande), Positanoappears to be a pyramid of houses climbingtowards the sky. To the east the little beaches ofLaurito, San Pietro, Arienzo, Fiumicello, La Porta,Torre Sponda, are immersed in a luxuriant and pic-turesque vegetation. On the western side of theshore, a little pedestrians’ road skirting the rockleads to the beach of Fornillo. Two towers, theTower of Fornillo or Clavel and the Tower Trasita,were built in the Fifteenth century for protecting thecoast from enemy raids. From here you can reachthe beautiful beaches of Remmese, Scogli Piani andCavone by sea.Li Galli, the three rocky and lonely isles of GalloLungo, the Rotonda and Briganti mirroring them-selves in the limpid sea facing Positano, were,according to old legends, inhabited by the syrenescharming and seducing sailers with their singing.Periodically visited by Tiberius, protected by theAngevins with the Tower for dissuading raiders totake refuge on it, the last inhabitants of these isleshaving their own natural charm, have been thechoreographer Leonide Massine and the balletdancer Rudolph Nureyev.
