The Economic Yearbook of the Stara Zagora region is an annual publication by the Chamber of Commerce and

Industry (CCI) Stara Zagora. This years edition is the 12th issue. It presents a review of the regional economy

of Stara Zagora via the most visible manufacturing and commercial enterprises as well as contact information of

hundreds of companies. The Yearbook is the only edition that releases exact financial information about more than

300 businesses which influence the image of the economy in Stara Zagora region. The sales revenue and profit data

of the companies is represented by comparing information from 2010 and 2011 (the last two years for which public

financial reports are available). This information allows the firms to be ranked according to the economic indicator

and companys type.

In this publication the Chambers own data is used, as well as data provided by the National Statistical Institute;

Employment Office Directorate Stara Zagora etc.

The data is processed as of January 31, 2013, by the media team at CCI Stara Zagora Media Centre.

This publication is bilingual written both in Bulgarian and English. It is aimed at all visitors to the region of

Stara Zagora who would like to get acquainted with the main economic resources of the region; including managers

from Bulgarian and foreign companies and also the general public.

The current publication is distributed through embassies, foreign trade agencies in Bulgaria, commercial fairs

and exhibitions in the country and abroad, at formal meetings in the District Administration of Stara Zagora and in

municipalities in the region. It is also available from the network of Bulgarian and European Chambers of Commerce

and Industry, the European Enterprise Network, public libraries and bookstores. The yearbook is also used as a

reference book by hundreds of company managers from the Stara Zagora region and elsewhere.

The publication has an electronic version disseminated through Economic portal of Stara Zagora region

(www.chambersz.com) info webpage of the publisher Stara Zagora Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Geographical location and infrastructure of Stara Zagora District

The administrative district of Stara Zagora is located in Central Bulgaria, which gives natural advantages to the companies operating within the region. The territory of the district is crossed by highways and first-class roads and railways. Three of the European Transport Corridors pass through the territory of Stara Zagora, including the impor-tant connections between the Northern border of Bulgaria by the Danube river and the Southern border with Turkey and Greece. The completion of the Trakiya highway provides a convenient automo-bile connection from the capital to the sea side and stimulates the business development in the region.

In 2013 the procedures, aimed at building a modern airport for international air cargo trans-port, as well as a logistics centre next to it, are ex-pected to begin. Serious investment interest to the reconstruction of the airport and resumption of its activity was declared in 2012 by major investors from China, India and Korea. It is envisaged that the airport would maintain cargo flights and turn

into a corridor for goods from around the world to European markets. The site is located close by to the south of the city.

Stara Zagora has established excellent com-munications and infrastructure, allowing the use of natural gas as an energy source from the main manufacturing industries, and this gives them yet another advantage over competitors from other re-gions.

The administrative district of Stara Zagora is located in an area of 5,151.1 sq. km. Its territory contains the largest deposits of lignite coal on the Balkan Peninsula, used as a raw material for the production of electricity by 4 thermal power plants. The energy sector contributes significantly to the leading position of Stara Zagora in Bulgarias econ-omy. Thanks to this the region attracts huge foreign and domestic investments. Over the last few years these are directed towards construction of new ca-pacities for the power plants and the moderniza-tion of existing capacity and equipment. Among the other important natural resources of the region are the fertile agricultural lands, forests and dozens of mineral springs.

The district centre of Stara Zagora ranks sixth in Bulgaria in terms of population after Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Bourgas and Rousse. The town is situated in the Southern slopes of Sredna Gora Mountain and has the following geographic coordinates: 42o25 North latitude and 25o37 East longitude. The aver-age altitude is 197 m.

Stara Zagora District is comprised of 11 mu-nicipalities with a total of 206 settlements, 11 of which are towns: Stara Zagora, Kazanlak, Radnevo, Chirpan, Galabovo, Pavel Bania, Maglizh, Gurkovo, Nikolaevo, Shipka and Krun. Two of the municipali-ties within the district Opan and Bratia Daskalovi, possess the statute of villages.

The average life expectancy in Bulgaria is 76.4 years for women and 69.2 years for men and these figures are applicable to the population of the Stara Zagora District. In comparison, the average life ex-pectancy for EU countries is 80.8 years for women and 74.3 years for men.

The population density in the region of Stara Zagora is 67 people per 1 square kilometer, and the highest rate is in the Regional city, where there live on average 160 people per square kilometer.

According to the census of the 1st February 2011, the population of the Republic of Bulgaria is 7,364,570 people. In the period between the last two official censuses in 2001 and 2011, the coun-trys population has decreased by 564,331 people, with an annual decrease rate of 0.7%.

According to the state administration data, the population of Stara Zagora District is 357,944 peo-ple. In the municipality of Stara Zagora there are 172,278 residents. Ranked in terms of population, Stara Zagora District remains the fifth largest city in the country.

The economy of Stara Zagora District

The main economic activities which shape the image of the Stara Zagora Region are: the process-ing industry, energetics, construction as well as retail and wholesale trade. Data from the National Statistical Institute, which includes economic indi-cators of approximately 14,300 companies, showed that in 2011 their revenues amounted to more than BGN 8.5 bln., that is an increase of 9% compared to the previous year. Trade companies accumulate net sale revenue of BGN 2.7 bln. which means the sector is holding on to its lead position. Compared to the previous year, the growth is due to the activity of processing enterprises they have generated a net sales revenue totaling BGN 1.8 bln. and this amount is with BGN 330 mln. an increase from the last year. The production and distribution of electricity and heat energy reaches net sales revenue worth BGN 1.2 bln. which indicates an annual growth of BGN 128 mln. The construction sector has also achieved growth and the volume of net sales revenue has reached BGN 803 mln.

During the last three to four years the agricul-ture industry is developing dynamically, however compared on an annual basis the sector shows a slight decrease.

Micro companies are the most numerous in the region according to the survey of NSI for the number of employees in enterprises. The number of small companies (from 10 to 49 employees) in Stara Zagora District is approximately 1,000, while medium-sized companies are around 180. Forty enterprises that have hired more than 250 workers are considered to be large.

Data of the NRA indicates that the number of active companies in Stara Zagora is nearly 62,000. There are 8,900 companies now registered under the VAT ACT. As large taxpayers and social security payers are considered 47 companies from Stara Zagora District. There are 222 companies who be-long to the middle tax bracket. In 2012 the NRA office in Stara Zagora has provided approximately BGN 244 mln. in tax revenues and social security contributions to the state budget (excluding the amounts of large and medium taxpayers and con-tributors in the field). Revenues are BGN 27 mln. more than the previous year.

Tax revenues are BGN 24 mln. more than the previous year, and the total amount is BGN 137 mln. A significant increase in revenues from VAT is taken into account, as the sum collected in 2012 is BGN 71 mln. The paid corporate taxes are BGN 21 mln. Income tax of individuals received in the state budget is BGN 44 mln.

The GDP of the Stara Zagora District is approxi-mately 3% of the country amount. Bulgarias GDP for 2012 was EUR 39.5 bln. (assessment of Bulgarian national bank). For 2011 it was EUR 38.5 bln.

January December 2012 amounted to EUR 1,398 mln. (preliminary data). That represents 3.5% of GDP. The amount of FDI from January to December 2011 is 1,746 million, which is 4.5% of GDP.

The largest foreign direct investments in Bulgaria for January December 2012 were made by the Netherlands (EUR 475 mln.), Luxembourg (EUR 391 mln.), Switzerland and Russia (EUR 169 mln. each).

By sectors, the largest net inflows for the peri-od January December 2012 were achieved by the Transportation industry (EUR 473 mln.) and the Production and distribution of electric and thermal energy, gas and water industry (437 mln.).

The optimistic estimates are that in 2013 for-eign companies are going to invest around EUR 1.7 bln. in Bulgaria. The implementation of this fore-cast, with expected growth of nearly 20%, however, is directly dependent on economic and political sta-bility. It is combined with a growth forecast of in-flation from 3 to 3.5% and economic growth in the range of 0.5 to 1.3%.

In Stara Zagora, according to NSI data, foreign direct investment at the end of December 2011 amounted to EUR 562 mln. This sum is EUR 12 mil-lion less than the previous year.

The largest amount of investments is made in Galabovo (EUR 317 mln.), followed by Stara Zagora (EUR 160 mln.) and Kazanlak (EUR 46 mln.). The Nederland has been the biggest investor for several years in a row. In 2011, the investments made by the northern European country in Stara Zagora region totaled EUR 322 mln., which is a similar amount to the figures for the previous year.
