Firstly, I would like to publically thank all those who contributed to our first edition in April. It was a labour of love for all involved and I was delighted that so many contributed and fed back positive reviews. It’s not easy pulling a credible publication together, so massive thanks must go to the editorial team Rob, Emily, Janine, Lorraine, Lyndsey and Clare for their amazing efforts.

With such a great job done with issue 1, we’ve had one hell of a task in producing the follow up, but by jove, I think we’ve actually cracked it!

With another headline exclusive and our exciting new sponsor Currys PC World, this edition is another bumper filled read, which I trust you will all thoroughly enjoy.

Subscriptions are growing in line with expectations and we’re now seeing a bright future for the magazine.

Thanks again for all contributions this month… and enjoy!

Consumer protection insurance isn’t new. Many trade associations offer policies, which ultimately support customers of retailers that fall into liquidation. The customers of companies that do not offer such protection are inevitably exposed to significant financial loss, with installers also feeling the pain as the business goes under.

However, the iKBBI have been developing a new and holistic policy with a leading specialist in consumer protection, which will not only include protection for the consumer in the event of a collapse, but now also financial protection for the installer too.

Over the years, many businesses have ceased to trade, from MFI to Dolphin and more recently Tesco Kitchens & Bathrooms. Thankfully, many customers were protected, either by insurance policies or by their own bank or credit card provider. However, what is common is the significant loss felt by the installer who was contracted to complete the installations – many of whom have lost tens of thousands of pounds over more than one retail collapse.

The new insurance scheme will be available to iKBBI Installation Standards Partners, with a specific aim to raise standards and to support

consumers and installers in the event of a member firms insolvency.

iKBBI members who undertake the relevant contract for the retail customer will be protected against loss for the non-payment of contract where the contract has not been started, they have not been paid, there is no right of set off by the retailer and that they haven’t breached the terms of their agreement with the retailer. For the consumer, it means that the original installer completes the project, which in addition to financial protection, also reduces the inconvenience and stress suffered when these unfortunate situations arise.

NEW COMMUNICATIONS ROLE The iKBBI is pleased to announce that as part of its ongoing growth, it has appointed a new Communications Manager position, with an objective to develop and deliver a robust communication strategy for the institute.

Denise Mayell joins the iKBBI HQ team next week, with further updates to follow.

iKBBI SUPPORTS THE INAUGURAL SCOTTISH HOME IMPROVEMENT AWARDS

RECRUITMENT SUPPORT FOR THE INDUSTRY

The iKBBI recently launched a new tool for its Installation Standards Partners, allowing free access to a database of installers who are actively seeking opportunities to work with local, regional and national retailers.

Since the launch of the initiative in June, over 600 installers have registered on the database, with around a 50-50 split between kitchen and bathroom installation specialists – not all of whom are current iKBBI members.

iKBBI compliance manager Christine Masson said: “The initiative, which is exclusively accessible by our retail Installation Standards Partners (iSP’s), provides another way for us to support our members when they expand their commercial income streams, it is also a useful tool for our iSP’s and their recruitment challenges.”

Christine added: “We’ll ramp up this initiative over coming weeks and also plan to launch additional services, to include a database of experienced Installation Managers who are actively seeking new challenges within the industry.”

Installers can upload their details to the new register by completing a two minute survey at: www.ikbbi-recruitment.org.uk - Installation Managers wanting listing should email their CV to: [email protected]

The Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installers is proud to be supporting the inaugural Scottish Home Improvement Awards 2015 in association with Tradepoint.

Paramount Creative, the company behind the awards is searching nationwide for Scotland’s best

firms as voted by their customers. Five finalists from each category will be shortlisted and all finalists will be researched and reviewed by a team of independent judges.

The winners will then be announced at a Gala Final on Friday 21st August 2015 which will be held at The Crowne Plaza in Glasgow.

The iKBBI would like to congratulate Membership Manager Lynsey Easom and her husband Gary on the birth of a baby boy. Charlie was born on Wednesday 1st July and is pictured here with big sister Gracie and brother Max.

FEARS FOR THE FUTURE

Chief Executive Damian Walters expressed concern this week, fearing the recent economic global woes may have pushed a high volume of experienced installers away from the industry over recent years.

Speaking exclusively to ‘The Installer’ magazine, Damian explained that many time served professionals had fallen victim to the recession and had taken their expertise into other sectors, “With demand from retailers on the rise, we are already witnessing a shortfall of professional installers being available in the marketplace.”

“Quality bathroom installers are in demand at the moment, as many who operated over the last decade have either hung up their tools, or have adapted and taken their skills into other, perhaps more stable sectors, gas installation

being a prime example. This has been as a direct result of failing businesses and a lack of consumer confidence in the economy,” Damian said.

As the nation continues to recover, inevitably local and national retailers will be seeking the services of professional installers, but with a lack of career entry opportunities for young talent, there will almost certainly be a lag and a subsequent shortfall whereby supply doesn’t meet demand.

When asked how we tackle this, Walters said: “There is no simple solution here,

the iKBBI is working with BIS (The government’s department for Business, Innovation & Skills) on its Apprentice Trailblazer initiative, as well as guidance from City & Guilds on attracting youngsters, the next generation of professional installers, into the industry.

Additionally, as consumer confidence and demand returns, retailers are urged to review their recruitment and retention policies to ensure that they not only attract, but retain the best and most professional installers in the market, ensuring that they are not lost to the private sector.”

IKEA TO TRIAL NEW RETAIL FORMAT WITH KITCHEN PLANNING STUDIO

GEBERIT RELEASES AUTUMN TRAINING DATESGeberit has announced the autumn dates for its free-to-attend training modules for installers as part of its Training Academy.

The training days allow installers to choose from different training modules with various levels of experience. Training modules include standard and premium WC systems and piping systems.

The company also offers personal or ‘bespoke’ training days that can be organised with an installer’s Geberit area sales manager.

All training days are carried out at Geberit’s Training Academy in Warwick. Attendees receive a free Geberit Duofix frame and flush plate. The company has already seen 350 installers taking part in the training days so far this year.

Geberit’s autumn training days are as follows:

Swedish home furnishing giant Ikea is set to open a new format of retail store in Norwich this autumn, with the branch acting primarily as a planning studio for customers looking to plan and purchase kitchens.

The new Norwich store will be the first of Ikea’s Order and Collection Points, a new format it plans on rolling out across the UK to make shopping with the retailer “easier and more convenient,” according to the company.

“We are extremely excited to announce our plans to test and explore Order and Collection Points as an addition to our current sales channels,” said Ikea UK country manager Gillian Drakeford. “We know that customers in the UK like to shop across many channels and using multiple devices.”

“Our customers are also telling us that with 18 stores in the UK, we are often too far away. Order and Collection Points give us the opportunity to trial new ways of being more accessible to our customers,” added Drakeford.

Abacus Manufacturing Group recently held a training day aimed at bathroom installers who were interested in learning how to fit and install wetrooms and become “waterproof professionals”.

Abacus Managing Director Ian Pattison headed up the training day for the 15 bathroom installers who attended, using the brand’s Elements product range to demonstrate how to waterproof a room.

“It was a great day and very beneficial for the installers to see how to use Elements in order to create a completely waterproof wetroom,” said Pattison. www.abacusdirectltd.com

UK Construction Week has confirmed that broadcast journalists John Humphrys, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Steph McGovern will host the main stage seminar programme at the event in October.

The journalists will take part in debates, panel discussions, CPD seminars and workshops at the event, which for the first time will include the three-day Kitchens & Bathrooms Live show on 6-8th October.

John Humphrys will host the first day of the event to discuss Government policy, the housing crisis and the economy. BBC financial correspondent Steph McGovern will chair the second day, while Krishnan Guru-Murthy will host the final day to discuss procurement opportunities, unification of the industry and

J. ROTHERHAM INSTALLS THE UK’S FIRST DEDICATED SINTERED STONE PRODUCTION LINE

Tap manufacturer Zip has unveiled its new brand identity with a new logo and the strapline, ‘IT’S WATER. REFRESHED.’

According to the company, the rebrand is designed to better represent its position in the market of not just hot water taps but also chilled and sparkling filtered tap water. The company’s previous strapline was “Instant boiling water.”

“Our new brand better reflects our diverse range of products but also our proposition – that we are all about providing the purest, healthiest water possible, anyway

you want it – instantly,” said Zip Sales and Marketing Director Paul Colebrook. “Our new-look marks the start of a very exciting few months, and years – it’s not just our brand identity that has been given a makeover – our products have too!

“We can’t wait to unveil some exciting new products to our residential and commercial customers, we know they will love them as much as we do. Watch this space for our new campaign, launching this Autumn.”

J. Rotherham has installed the UK’s first dedicated sintered stone production line.

J. Rotherham’s investment includes a new Breton CNC saw, NC300 CNC router and a new 5 axis Breton Classica waterjet; the most precise machine available on the UK market. Designed specifically for cutting sintered stone slabs, the high pressure water jet creates a precise, clean cut like no other. Due to the tensile strength of sintered stone, J. Rotherham’s new water jet method is especially valuable when mitring high-quality worktops for built-up edges or when specialist shaping is required. A worthy addition to its 17 acre state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Yorkshire, J. Rotherham’s integration of this production line is to primarily create increased capacity whilst achieving the best finish across the newly launched Lapitec and Neolith sintered stone worktops.

• Neolith sintered stone worktops are available in 23 finishes of 3mm, 6mm and 12mm thicknesses

• Lapitec sintered stone worktops are also available in 23 finishes but thickness choices are 12mm and 20mm. www.jrotherham.co.uk

Business Matters

recently pointed out, the average amount owed to a small business is more than £30,000. To tackle this problem, the government has proposed the setting up of a Small Business Conciliation Service, which will make it easier for small businesses to settle their payment disputes with customers. This should also help to encourage a more business friendly payment culture throughout the British economy. These are just a few of the many measures being taken in this ‘no nonsense’ bill. It has long been the intention of the Conservatives to make Britain one of the best places in the world to do business. In making this a reality, it is important to recognise the huge role that small businesses play in the overall economic picture. The new Government’s Enterprise Bill is a hugely important step on this journey.

Stephen Metcalfe

iKBBI PATRON AND MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT STEPHEN METCALFE DISCUSSES HOW THE NEW GOVERNMENT ENTERPRISE BILL CAN HELP INSTALLERS

I hope that installers are aware that this government is committed to ensuring that the UK truly becomes one of the best places in the world to do business, and the new Government Enterprise Bill is key to this, because it is drafted in recognition of the importance of keeping small businesses at the heart of our economic plan. The Federation of Small Businesses reported that at the beginning of 2014, small firms accounted for a huge 99.3 per cent of overall private sector business in the UK. Small businesses alone (those with fewer than 50 employees) account for 48 per cent of private sector employment and 33 per cent of private sector turnover. It really is difficult to exaggerate the importance of small businesses to the overall economic wellbeing of the UK. Having worked in my own family business, I understand that one of the biggest barriers to progress in business is needless red tape. That is why I am so pleased that at the centre of the new Enterprise Bill, is the slashing of burdensome red tape that gets in the way of so many businessmen and women up and down the country. The Business Secretary Sajid Javid, has promised cuts in regulation worth £10 billion in total. In addition, small businesses will benefit from the extension of a Primary Authority regime; meaning that businesses will be permitted to operate under one rule set according to their local authority – making it much easier for businesses to grow and expand into different parts of the country. Equally important to small businesses, and I imagine of particular concern to the readers of ‘The Installer,’ is the issue of late payments. Late payments are set to cost British business more than £40bn this year. As Sajid Javid

Understanding the latest technology in the cooling market can help installers build confidence and trust with customers who may reach out to them for advice. It also provides a great opportunity to influence the decision making process towards models which are swift and stress free to install. We’ve caught up with some of the top bods from the industry to get their thoughts.

Like electricity or running water, having a cooling appliance is a must in every home and, with more and more people moving and improving their homes, the installation of these must-have appliances is only set to increase. Head of Built-In at Leisure and Beko plc, Murat Spaci, shares this belief: “The cooling market grew by 10.4% last year; which coincided with average earnings overtaking inflation and unemployment levels reaching an all-time low. Housing transactions topped 100,000 for the first time since 2007. Home owners are now in a position where they can afford to refurbish their homes, including upgrading their kitchen appliances.”

If you open a brochure for any cooling appliance manufacturer you’re sure to see a host of product features, so identifying the ones that matter to customers is a must. Richard Treffler, Kitchen Product Manager at Miele, said: “The core shopping fundamentals have not changed. Consumers are looking to maximise space and keep food fresher for longer. The cost of running the appliance and the energy ratings are now also at the forefront of the customer’s mind.” Liebherr’s Divisional Manager UK Tim Hutchinson also states: “One of the continuing areas for development in refrigeration and freezing is energy efficiency. Our appliances offer customers a rating of A++ and A+++, plus our A+++ is 20% more energy efficient than the base level required. Over the years we have been making our appliances more and more energy efficient so we now have a number of models in the A+++ category.”

Now, while some customers are going to be won over by the latest and very best features, there’s always going to be those that are primarily concerned with the bottom line. When you take a look over a whole kitchen, refrigerators and freezers are the only ones that are on 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so there’s good reason for highlighting how a great saving can be made by investing in an energy efficient model. Tim continues: “You need to remind them that electricity costs are only likely to increase for all of us, so investing in an A+++ machine is investing in the future. As energy gets more expensive, they’ll be better placed.” Murat agrees, stating that, “the right cooling appliances can help save money on bills long-term.” Richard concurs: “Our K30000 built in refrigeration appliances are all A++ energy rated as standard, saving around £40/year relative to a ‘A’ energy rated model according to the Energy Saving Trust. All of our refrigeration appliances are tested for the equivalent of 20 years of use and so over the lifetime of the product offer consumers a cost effective proposition.” Murat also points out that, “The Beko ASN541 EcoSmart fridge-freezer, for example, saves households £11 a year, amounting to £110 over ten years.”

But it’s not just energy ratings that can save customers money. Tim notes: “Food wastage is a big problem in the UK and manufacturers are helping to combat this issue by producing refrigerators that can help to make food last longer with high-tech features. Our innovative BioFresh drawers provide the right humidity for specific types of food such as fish, exotic fruits and meat and dairy. The extra days it can add are outstanding; cheese 100+ days, carrots 30+ days, lettuce 8+ days etc.” Energy efficiency and food wastage might be the hot topics in refrigeration and freezing, but

knowing where you can provide unique insight can give installers the edge. Tim says installers should highlight “soft-close technology, as it stops the door from being slammed. On tall units, you have to consider that the furniture doors can be quite heavy. If the appliance doesn’t have soft-close technology, the door can slam, which can lead to spillages inside the appliance. Over time, the spills may leak into the gaps and this could lead to the need for repairs. By simply looking for a model with soft-close technology, you can avoid this issue.” He also highlights: “We have a lock-in pin accessory, which can prevent the door from opening wider beyond 90 degrees so that it doesn’t bash into adjacent furniture or appliances.”

So what do installers need to consider when installing cooling appliances to ensure they get the best margins with timely and problem free installations? Richard comments: “There are two main points to consider. Always ensure that there is enough space for the fridge-freezer to be opened with ease and that there is also enough ventilation space surrounding the unit, helping to ensure optimum performance.” Tim adds, “Like everything in life, quality is reflected in the price and so an easy to fit appliance is likely to cost more than a cheaper, more difficult to fit, less energy efficient and less well made machine.”

So how can fitting one model be easier or simpler than another? Tim suggests: “Our built-in appliances are very easy to install because they have special positioning installation guide strips to help marry the appliance with the furniture door. This is a critical stage in the installation process, as it must be done correctly to ensure that the appliance shuts correctly. It’s essential to install an integrated appliance accurately, otherwise it won’t work properly or the lifespan will be greatly reduced.”

While fitting the product is the job of the installer, manufacturers need to play their part in reducing potential problems or margins for errors. Richard says they’re offering training programmes with: “practical and interactive sessions, designed to ensure that attendees leave with sound knowledge, as well as confidence. Our customer call centre also benefits from technical advisors who are always on hand to offer support, as well as engineers for if an installer has a more challenging question.” Tim concludes “We offer training at our new facilities in the UK. There’s also training videos for built-in models, which you can view on YouTube, which show every step, even from how best to open the box so as not to damage the appliance.”

FRANKE EXTENDS ITS POPULAR CENTINOX SINK RANGE WITH FOUR NEW UNDERMOUNT MODELS

Franke has extended its popular Centinox sink design with the addition of four new stainless steel undermount models, complementing the existing inset option. Centinox is positioned between Franke’s Kubus and Peak ranges, offering installers a wider choice of undermounts at different price points.

The new Centinox models are part of Franke’s Specialist range, which was updated in April with new sinks, taps, extractor hoods and waste sorters and are CMX 110 17 half bowl, CMX 110 34 small single bowl, CMX 110 50 large single bowl and CMX 160 34-17 1.5 bowl options fit a range of cabinet sizes from 400mm to 600mm.

The crisp, linear design of the Centinox is emphasised by the square basket strainer waste and tight 12.5mm corner radii and the silk stainless steel finish makes it highly durable and very easy to clean.

In January 2015, Blum extended its hotline hours to 8am-8pm Monday to Friday with an 8am-12 midday service on Saturdays. The hotline - 0800 230 0898 – has proved to be an invaluable tool for Blum users, specifiers and installers with an increasing number of callers week on week.

The decision to offer an out of hours service follows the results of a widely circulated questionnaire, where 75% of respondents agreed that an extended service would be of use. Blum works extremely closely with its customers, and understands that a strict nine to five approach is no longer viable in today’s hectic working environment.

Blum UK Sales & Marketing Director David Sanders said: “We realise that in today’s busy world, normal business hours no longer apply… and this is true of the KBB industry as any other. The most used service in our business is Technical Sup-port so we are now meeting the demands of our customers by extending the hours that this service is available.”

Currys launches its ‘Stay Cool’ campaign in July as part of its summer promotion to encourage customers to be inspired with the latest in technology and designs and to upgrade their existing refrigeration products, whether it’s a side-by-side fridge-freezer, free-standing tall fridge and freezer, or standard integrated appliance.

Summer is usually the time when fridge-freezers are under more strain to keep cool due to hot weather and customers are therefore more likely to make a stress purchase when faced with their appliance malfunctioning.

Currys provides a perfect solution as it stocks the widest range of fridge-freezers to view in store with many popular lines available from stock, plus a vast range is obtainable online at www.currys.co.uk all available with free delivery nationwide.

Popular models include large American style fridge-freezers which are perfect for a new kitchen, and for the replacement market Currys has the latest technology and cooling products, many with greater internal capacities. Under-counter fridges and freezers can provide extra food storage this summer and cooling appliances that feature water and ice dispensers are extremely popular.

Order a skip and hope it arrives on time, only to be let down by the supplier, sound familiar? However, this can be a thing of the past as there are easier, more reliable and much cheaper alternatives.

‘The Installer’ magazine spoke to Matt Crump, Marketing Manager of iKBBI official sponsor HIPPO, to investigate what they offer as a solution. Matt said “We have launched HIPPOTRADE which is an initiative that provides smart and simple waste solutions for the trade and we have tailored a package specifically for iKBBI members.” He continued, “Membership of HIPPOTRADE offers iKBBI members discounted rates on waste disposal, dedicated support, and exclusive rewards.”

HIPPOBAGs deliver a simple, cost-effective and instant waste solution and are therefore an ideal alternative to traditional skips. The bags come flat-packed thus eliminating a potential problem of waiting around for skips to be delivered before you can start work or complete a project; this means that you can move on to the next job quicker. Furthermore, being flat-packed, if ordered in advance, they can take up little space in transit to a job or site development.

HIPPOBAGs come in 3 different sizes providing for a vast range of projects:

• MIDIBAG – 1 cubic yard, 1 tonne. The MIDIBAG is ideal for heavy waste like rubble and soil. • MEGABAG – 1.5 cubic yard, 1.5 tonnes. Holds an entire bathroom suite.

• HIPPOBAG – 4.5 cubic yard, 1.5 tonnes. Ideal for larger projects, the bag is big enough to hold an entire kitchen rip out!

SOUTH LONDONER LAYNE IVES TALKS ABOUT THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE ... AND OF ALL THINGS, MILLWALL!

A genial fella with sixteen years in business within the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom sectors, and also one of the founder members of the iKBBI, we asked Layne Ives how he became aware of the opportunities that this particular market sector would present to him, and how his business and the industry generally has grown during his tenure.

“I worked as an apprentice for a local company for a few years and I gradually became aware of the opportunities. The thing is, especially back in the early days when there were no measurable standards, anyone could have a go at fitting a kitchen or installing a bathroom but few specialised. So there was an opportunity, and probably still is, for installers who go about their business with professionalism.” We asked Layne to define professionalism to which he answered “Working quickly, accurately, considerately, courteously and importantly, be reliable.”

Layne’s business covers the South East of England, predominantly London and the Home Counties which are easily accessed from its base in Dartford, Kent being so close to the M25. We asked how his company works in terms of labour and employment, “My business works with a mixture of employed staff, which administers and manages the installations, together with sub-contracted tradesmen. These can be anything from installers to general builders, gas engineers and electricians. Crucially, in my opinion, my team are capable of delivering total projects,” he answered. Does Layne have a preference to installing kitchens or bathrooms and if so why? He replied “Not really, it’s more about the quality of product we install, as opposed to the type of installation; we specialise in both kitchens and bathrooms and I have professional

“I reckon it must be around 20% bathrooms, 20% general home refurbishment and 60% kitchens; kitchens are definitely in our blood!”

tradesman specific to each project.” And what would the percentage split be between the various installs? “Our work is split, I reckon it must be around 20% bathrooms, 20% general home refurbishment and 60% kitchens. Kitchens are definitely in our blood!”

So, how does a successful installation business generate its work? Layne answered with obvious pride by saying, “Aside from retail sourced work, I’ve built my business by creating a great reputation throughout the South East. We’re now installing for friends and families of previous customers and even the next generation from some of our early clients. I don’t advertise as, thankfully, I don’t need to.“ Asked if all of Layne’s work comes from recommendation or if he is contracted to a specific retailer, he responded, “I have worked for several retailers over the years, both independents and nationals, but have focused on the mid-to-upper end of the market over the last 5-6 years. My current contract is with John Lewis of Hungerford and I have been incredibly fortunate to have grown my business in line with theirs. It has not been without its challenges, but it’s a contract that I value enormously.”

Moving on to the iKBBI, we asked why he became an inaugural member and what changes he had seen in the organisation. “I thought that an institute in our business was well overdue, it seemed like a complete no-brainer to me, fortunately I’ve been lucky enough to see the institute grow over the last 8 years. There have been enormous

developments and I’ve been quietly impressed with where they are.” He continued, “more recently we have seen huge improvements with the iKBBI’s communications and members website. It is clear that they are working on our behalf and are making progress.”

So how specifically does being a member help Layne? He explained, “It’s simple really. I’ve won contracts as a direct result of being a member. The membership fee I pay each year is peanuts in comparison to the work I’ve acquired, but its like anything, you need to participate to get the most benefit. If you market yourself as accredited by the UK’s only institute within our industry, I find it hard to see how you can’t benefit. It gives my clients peace of mind, my business a commercial edge over competitors and the support I needed to grow my business.”

We questioned Layne as to what his biggest frustrations were business-wise; he didn’t hesitate when answering, “It’s the general public’s perception of tradesmen and the naivety of some when it comes to money. Everyone is looking for the cheapest deal (even those who buy into the mid-to-top end). Cheap isn’t always best when it comes to tradesmen and the amount of bodge jobs I’ve seen over the years is quite frankly disturbing, and a testament to the fact. The industry is a target for negative consumer press and this is not helped by those who are looking for something for nothing. If you want a professional job doing, hire a professional, professionals aren’t cheap for good reason. They only use the best tools and materials, they pay their tax

and contribute to society, are experienced enough to overcome the challenges of a complex product and have accreditation and insurances in place to protect their customers; this costs money and it has to be recovered when quoting for a project.”

When we asked if manufacturers could be more installer friendly, Layne answered “Yes, I believe so, especially if they engage those people who install their product. We may not wear suits to work, but we are the ones that operate on the front line; we have a lot to offer to the industry, it’s just a shame we’re rarely asked our opinion when it comes to the development of new product.” Finally, we enquired if Layne has a family and hobbies? “I live with my partner Nicola and our three children, 12 year old twins Jake & Jade and my son Lewis aged 15 in Orpington, Kent, I don’t get a lot of time for hobbies, apart from the occasional game of football, I’m a lifelong supporter of Millwall but don’t hold that against me!” he replied. And what hopes does he have for the future? “I hope that the industry continues to recover after the economic nightmare and that we can continue working with some of the best products in the market, this and Millwall to win something this year!”

“I’ve won contracts as a direct result of being a member. The membership fee I pay each year is peanuts in comparison to the work I’ve gained.”

Installer Advice

John Savage is Managing Director of Flame Heating Spares, a supplier of boiler replacement parts to the domestic, commercial and industrial heating markets. Despite starting out in business during the economic downturn three years ago, John has seen his business flourish from one trade counter in the North East, to what will be his third later in the year. It is through offering customers a bespoke service, including its unique and installer-friendly equipment lease service, which helps avoid unnecessary downtime that Flame has grown.

The key to success for any business is building a strong foundation that people can trust and, above all, delivering a high level of customer service.

In our industry, time is key and can be the difference between keeping the customer happy and losing their business to the competitor. What’s even worse is when you’re losing out because of issues that are out of your own control.

Take, for example, flue gas samples and the difficulties that installers are facing when commissioning boilers.

Flue gas, which may contain oxides of carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur as well as other pollutants, can prove to be a potential danger to households if the occupants’ heating appliances haven’t been properly maintained.

Carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be given off from a faulty combustion chamber, is probably the greatest danger to any occupant of a house or flat, so the importance of having any combustion product from heating appliances, such as boilers, checked and calibrated each year cannot be underestimated.

As we all know, any tradesman who carries out any form of heating installation, repair or maintenance work must take a flue sample using a flue gas analyser when a boiler is commissioned. This piece of kit, of course, must then be sent back to the manufacturer for servicing each year to be calibrated, which previously only took a matter of days to be completed.

In a move to further improve carbon monoxide (CO) safety on condensing boiler installations, last year, the Heating & Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC) recommended that all installers should use a flue gas

analyser to measure the level of CO and combustion ratio. This has since been made mandatory by the Gas Safe Register.

Obviously, it is important to take an accurate measurement when collecting the sample and it is a relatively simple process for the installer.

Unfortunately, due to significant growth in the number of products now owned by manufacturers, this once seemingly simple task is becoming quite a handful for manufacturers. The turnaround time has increased significantly, and the knock-on effect can leave installers out of pocket, and unable to do their jobs which are their bread and butter, which will not only frustrate tradesmen, but their customers too.

Who would have thought a portable electronic device would prove to be so much potential trouble?

Busy is good, as long as you can handle the workload and still maintain a high level of customer service. As it is an important precaution to take and, as it happens, a requirement by law, this process shouldn’t be taken lightly and needs to be handled correctly.

To help bridge the gap and lend a helping hand to installers who may well have come across this awkward situation, we have introduced our leasing service – the first of its kind among merchants in the UK.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER (AND CLEANER) WHEN WORKING WITH SOLID SURFACE MATERIALS

Ever worked with solid surface and asked yourself, “There must be an easier and cleaner way to work with this material that saves time and makes life just that little bit easier?”

Festool make machines and accessories for the application described above. For example the TS55R plunge saw with the guide rail system will immediately make life easier just by providing a straight true cut. However, transfer this straight cut to a material like solid surface, with the correct blade and guide rail together along with excellent extraction, you are then immediately on to a great combination for professional results in a few easy steps.

The TS55R can be adapted to give a perfect cut by using the correct blade for the correct material. For example, for a plastic based material the laminate blade is perfect. This has the correct tooth bevels to provide an entry cut for each tooth so the material is ‘scraped’ rather than directly cut. As the TS55R has variable speed, slow the speed of the blade to 3-4 and let the saw and blade do the work – the result is a cut that requires little re-work so less labour time is used = cash in the bank!!

Tools, Power Tools & Equipment Advice

Wondering how to hold the rail in position without using screw clamps? The answer to this is simple and is based on suction. Rather than move a lump of heavy solid surface to fix the guide rail in position, it is easier to not to have to move the material and fix from above with the Gecko suction pads fitted to the rail. The result is a guide rail that can be freely positioned in seconds and less lifting, again this saves time and effort all the way through the job.

Solid surface when cut generates a huge amount of fine dust that needs to be extracted away from the work area but more importantly away from the air that is being breathed for the benefit of all in the vicinity. The TS55R connected to an extractor will remove the waste simply and easily. The saw can be fitted with an ABSA fence and this increases the extraction rate and provides an easy way to work healthier.

The extraction should be through an M class unit which comes with a 27mm hose. This will give great results but can be further enhanced when a 36mm hose is used. As a bigger volume of air is pulled through the 36mm hose, the extraction of the solid surface waste is excellent. Attaching the hoses is simple - all you do is push the hose on so the days of tape or add on sleeves is over when this system is used. Another benefit to this

extraction system is that the extractors and hoses prevent you getting a static shock. Solid surface is notorious for producing static so you can work without the hairs on your arms sticking up!!

Overall working like this will save you time, produce better work and cleaner results. Combine this with the Festool 3 year SERVICE All-Inclusive warranty and you receive a professional set up for kitchen fitters who work with solid surface.

Is it a car or a van?The distinction as to whether a vehicle is a car or a van is extremely important in relation to tax legislation. Vans are treated as plant and machinery for tax purposes and as such, entitle the business to potentially 100% capital allowance claims and a full recovery of input VAT if the business is VAT registered. Cars do not allow any VAT to be reclaimed and capital allowances are at much reduced rates.

The vast spectrum of vans and hybrid vehicles now available to traders means that their status for tax can be somewhat of a minefield. It is recommended that when acquiring a vehicle, you should query this point with the dealer and check further with your tax advisor. In the meantime, HMR&C have released an updated list of vehicles that clarifies status for VAT purposes. It may be useful for reference purposes and can be located at www.gov.uk/government/publications/hm-revenue-and-customs-car-derived-vans-and-combi-vans.

Financial Advice

TAX TIPS by Dean Flood

For many sole traders and indeed larger businesses, motor running costs are a significant element of expenses and documentation. This quarter’s column covers some relevant issues.

Benefits in Kind If you have employees who receive taxable benefits in kind, the benefits must be reported to HMR&C through form P11d. The deadline for P11d submission

to HMR&C for benefits received in the tax year ended 5th April 2015 is the 19th July 2015. The completion of these forms can be quite complicated especially where benefits include the use of a company car for private purposes. Equally, the penalties for incorrect P11d completion are significant so if in any doubt as to your compliance responsibilities on these matters, appropriate professional advice is recommended.

Fixed Profit Car SchemeFed up with keeping a track of your expense receipts for your vehicle?

Another way of claiming expenses in connection with operating your vehicle is to use the HMR&C approved Fixed Profit Car Scheme (FPCS). For businesses that are operating below the VAT registration threshold, vehicle running costs can be claimed for business mileage at a rate of 45p per mile (1st 10,000 miles in a year) and 25p per mile thereafter. Receipts do not need to be maintained but the mileage claimed for, must be recorded. For sole traders undertaking significant levels of mileage, the FPCS can be a more tax efficient means of calculating tax deductible motor running expenses and eliminate the need for a dashboard covered in receipts. The use of the FPCS does have implications on the availability of capital allowances so is not always a favourable option but is worth considering if you undertake high business mileage.

Step by Step with Sharkbite

FIX BURST PIPES FAST!How many times has a customer called you out to a leak because they have put a nail or a screw through a pipe, or a pipe has split during the winter freeze?

Whatever the cause, repairing such damage permanently and reliably is now possible in a matter of minutes, thanks to the simple, yet ingenious Slip Couplings from the SharkBite range of push-fit plumbing solutions.

SharkBite Slip Couplings are the UK plumbing industry’s only ultra-low lead, brass push-fit repair solution that can be used on different types of pipe. Compatible with copper, carbon steel, PEX or polybutylene pipe, SharkBite Slip Couplings do not require heat for installation. The simple push-fit ends enable quick, permanent repairs, even in wet conditions, so there is no need to waste time looking for the stop tap and draining down the whole system.

Slip couplings are available in sizes measuring 15mm to 54mm and thanks to their slim-line body design, they are the ideal solution for repairs in confined spaces such as ceiling voids or behind walls.

Making a repair is quick and simple

STEP 1

Step 1 - Cut either side of the leak and remove the damaged section pipe*. Deburr the two pipe ends or insert pipe liners (as appropriate to the type of pipe). Mark the insertion depths on both pipe ends*

Step 2 – Identify the slip end of the slip coupling and slide onto one of the pipes (slip end first) until it reaches the stop (indicated by a line of the coupling body).

* Please reference the SharkBite Technical guidelines regarding the length of pipe that should be removed and the pipe insertion depth (both of which are dependent on the diameter of the pipe being used)

STEP 2

Product Feature, Kitchen Sinks & Taps

Perrin & Rowe’s Phoenix ‘C’ Spout 3-in-1 Hot Water Tap

EVERYTHING AND THE KITCHEN SINK

The sink and tap have come a long way from their humble origins. Far from being just a place to wash up, the choice of sink and tap is now much more considered.

We’ve heard countless times that open-plan living has revolutionised the way that we live and design our homes, but it’s interesting when you drill down to see how certain products have adapted to meet this demand.

One such evolution of interest to installers is the rise of undermounted or flushmounted designs. Mike Heath, Product Manager at BLANCO UK, comments: “The largest impact in the last five years has been the growth of undermount models in the market.” With their streamlined design, undermounted models have become the go-to product for anyone creating a high-end, minimalist style kitchen. Jeanette Ward Communications Manager at Franke comments:“Flushmounted sinks are emerging as a major trend at the moment because they achieve a streamlined aesthetic that gives any kitchen a premium look. However, they do involve specialist fabrication which can eat into a homeowner’s budget.

cont. on p44

A way to get a very similar look is to install the new generation of sinks that feature low profile edges. For example, a stainless steel inset sink with a thickness of 0.8mm would sit just above the work surface. This gives the impression of it being flushmounted but with the benefit of it being very easy and quick to install because it’s actually a standard inset. This style gives installers the option to offer the premium look of a flushmounted sink whilst keeping the costs down for the client.

So does size matter? David Cole, Sales Director at Perrin & Rowe, thinks so: “The most common kitchen sink is a bowl and a half. However, single, double and triple

bowl options are becoming more popular.” Mike adds: “Large single bowls and sinks are also popular models in today’s market, as they allow for added functionality whilst being sleek in design and thus integrating seamlessly in the kitchen environment.”

Taps have also benefited from a renewed interest in this area of the kitchen. Mike comments: “Taps have graduated from simply being functional to being functional ‘statement pieces’ and choice has increased with more ‘European’ taps available as the growth of pressure systems increases in the UK.”

There’s also increased functionality available, as David highlights: “Hot tap technology has developed dramatically, becoming a must-have addition for homeowners who want boiling hot water instantaneously.” He continues: “We have just introduced a new 3-in-1 kitchen tap that dispenses hot, cold and up to 99°C steaming hot filtered water.

... contEliminating the need for a separate filtered water source and outdated kettle, this new 3-in-1 hot tap is also controlled digitally with its easy-to-use LCD touch screen for the height of convenience and practical application.”

When it comes to advising clients, Mike recommends that you, “check carefully that the client’s choice not only meets their requirements but is easily accommodated in the furniture.” He adds: “It is worth considering, where possible, keeping the site plumbing and drainage services in the same area. Moving gas, electric, water and waste can be expensive and eat into the budget.” Regarding the choice of tap, Mike advises: “It is essential to establish if the supply is low or high pressure, gravity or balanced. Most tap suppliers will indicate the pressure and installation guidelines which, to avoid potential problems, should be strictly adhered to.”

When selecting a hot tap, David notes that, “quality, function and performance will vary greatly from brand to brand, so ensure the model you install has a tank, which is WRAS approved. This will guarantee the hot tap is fully accredited, operates safely and can be installed without fault.” And for filter taps, David recommends that you remember to “allow for more space under the sink, as you need to accommodate the filtration system, which consists of the filter housing and cartridge. The filtration unit is approximately 31cm high and fits neatly under the sink in any standard base unit or kitchen cabinet.”

popular products stripped back to an absolute minimum. However, the public are very discerning, so we feel there can be no compromise in terms of quality and therefore all of our products are not only well designed but beautifully engineered.” Jayne Barnes, Managing Director of Aqata agrees: “The popularity of the walk-in, wet room look has led to an increase in sales of contemporary frameless shower enclosures and screens.”

When considering how installers have been affected by these developments, manufacturers feel that trends have led to changes which have generally had a positive effect. Aqata’s Jayne Barnes notes that installers are having to work with an increasing number of different products and embrace new trends and technology, but believes that they are better off as a result. She explains: “Technological advances in glass manufacture and waterproof bonding have allowed frameless shower screens and enclosures to be developed which are superbly designed and of an extremely high quality, whilst still being practical to transport and install.”

Manufacturers also emphasize that when designing new products, ease of installation is something which is as important as form and function is for the end-user, so no concessions are made during the process. David Osborne, Managing Director of Roman explains: “Our own installers form part of our product development process. The end-user drives the look of the product, but they also have to be installed easily. We do not compromise installation for style; we ensure that the products can be both stylish and installed easily.”

Product Feature, Shower Screen & Enclosures

FIT AND FORGETWith the shower market experiencing tremendous growth in recent years, The Installer magazine investigates how screen and enclosure designs have changed and just how important installers are to manufacturers.

The British bathroom was once considered a purely functional room and showering solutions reflected this by lacking design inspiration, but things have changed dramatically as it has become a haven for relaxing and pampering, as well as for daily tasks like shaving, applying make up and of course, bathing. Heavily influenced by the continental market, UK consumers have embraced contemporary and minimalist design and have become far more demanding with regard to product build, quality, functionality and durability.

As Alex Cooper, Director at theshowerlab™ explains: “Designs of shower enclosures have evolved immeasurably with the most

Alex Cooper adds: “We have made a considerable investment by employing the services of a respected engineering practice to help us create a set of installation instructions that render clear and accurate imagery for installers along with ‘fail safe’ step-by-step instructions. These instructions are included with every product and can also be downloaded from our website thus allowing an installer the opportunity to read and understand the process before starting the installation. On a more physical side, we also, wherever possible, supply aluminium profiles and translucent seals pre-cut and notched meaning that the installer should only need to trim to length as required.”

Jayne Barnes also comments: “All Aqata products combine functional and practical elements with beautiful styling to create a cohesive design however, the ease of installation is equally imperative. Every enclosure leaving our Leicestershire factory also has easy to follow, step-by-step instructions that clearly identify whether an enclosure requires a one or two man lift and our Spectra

frameless range utilises the latest advances in waterproof bonding, which allows panels to join easily together. This keeps logistical problems on site to a minimum and products are quicker to install which saves valuable time for the installer.”

So how do manufacturers stay ahead of the game and keep up to date with what the installers need and want? Jayne Barnes explains: “We value any feedback we receive from installers when they contact us for advice and our regional sales team is also on the road speaking to retailers on a daily basis. In response to some recent feedback, a video can now be viewed online showing step-by-step assembly instructions for one of our popular

Spectra frameless enclosures.”

David Osborne says, “Our own installation team is heavily involved in our design process. We ensure that we get feedback on the ease of installation, the time taken to install the products and how useful our instruction manuals are.”

Manufacturers are also in complete agreement of the importance of providing a good after-sales service explaining that they work hard to support installers in order to minimise installation problems.

Alex Cooper points out: “In order to minimise problems during installation, we have a dedicated in-house measuring and installation department and as an added benefit, on the day of installation our installers bring the screens with them to guarantee there are no issues with regards to storing, damage or even theft.”

And Jayne Barnes agrees: “Keeping our customers happy and building and maintaining good long term relationships is vital for our

business. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and have a dedicated team of skilled installation engineers which offer advice and support to installers. We are happy to work alongside installers to find the best solutions for any showering space and can offer a templating and site installation service if required. We are also able to produce quotations from installer’s drawings and specifications for made to measure, bespoke solutions. We have found that clear and concise instructions and advice and support from a professional team of experts generally keep installation problems to a minimum.”

David Osborne also believes in the importance of providing after sales support: “After sales service is critical. Our customer service team have all worked in installation or production so they know the product intimately and what common issues arise when installing products and the time pressure that fitters face.”
