Men are petitioning their local leaders
or water, electricity and better services or
their entire village.
Tis is the kind o transormation we
dream about on the day o rescue. But
this kind o complete reedom takes time
and investment. We need you.Last year we helped rescue more than 500
children, women and men rom slavery in
India. With your investment, we can bring
restoration to those who desperately need it
and advance the mission o IJM. Teir journey
in our two-year program is just beginning.
Will you help restore and empower rescued
slaves, so they can thrive in reedom?

plan, how to dream,
w to be ree.
I have been on more than 65 operations
to help rescue amilies trapped in
slavery. I am still shocked by the brutal
actories and arms where grown men and
women are held captive, the closet-sized,
cement rooms where children are born and
raised to inherit this same uture.
During the rescue operation, I still get a
pit in my stomach when I see tiny children
packing up their amiliar tools and ollowing
dazed parents to the trucks that will carry
them to reedom. My social workers and I
stand beside the amilies as they recount their
stories to the police. Ive heard athers tell
about working 16-hour shits, seven days a
week; and how they watched their pregnant
wives aint rom exhaustion.
And yet, Ive also had the incredible privilege
o celebrating with more than 4,500 rescued
slaves. Ive escorted hundreds back to their
villages, witnessing sweet reunions or
amilies torn apart by slavery.
But that pit in my stomach doesnt go away
ater we drop them o. Because this is when
the hard work really begins or my team o
social workers. In captivity, slaves are robbed
o everything that makes them human. Tey
learn to ocus on simply surviving the day.
Rescue brings physical reedom, but now
we must help break the chains o
psychological bondage.
When I started with IJM Chennai ten years
ago, I looked or models o how to best care
or people rescued rom orced labor slavery.
I ound none. So my small team pioneered
a program that is designed to teach rescued
slaves how to thrive in reedom. Tey
must re-learn how to plan, how to dream,
how to be free.
oday we have a comprehensive, two-year

are not just setting slaves ree, we are helping

Rebuilding Foundations
at Home
There are huge challenges in the
rst weeks o reedom. Families
are homeless. Parents are jobless.
Every amily is assigned their own
IJM social worker, and adults get
a kit with basic tools so they can

Beore:Chinnayan was trapped as a slave
