Diwali Then And Now Diwali for me is an explosion of senses, the bursting colors, tantalizing aromas and mouth watering dishes. Diwali brings back fond memories in my mind of new clothes, new crackers, the making of traditional faral. I still remember the smell of the utana and oils that my mother would apply, the elaborate ceremony of this simple activity, waking up early, being the first among neighbors to light the panti, have the traditional medicine of Diwali after the early morning bath and then rush out with our quota of crackers and begin bursting before the others. Flaunting the new dress, chatting with friends, sharing the faral, yes the Diwali morning was full of festivities. Diwali always meant relatives at home. It was fun and happiness with which we all spent together. But Now, with children going to hostel, being with us for just a few days, the charm of togetherness during festival seems to be wearing off. The nuclear and the calorie conscious family, translates to less faral making, green Diwali means no bursting of crackers, and busy schedules refers to no relatives and friends. I understand today that the sharing of faral was just an excuse to share happiness, the bursting of crackers was an excuse to develop camaraderie . When Whatsapp first arrived, it gave us a satisfaction of having wished everyone, but the warmth and that personal touch seems missing. Today children do not get to enjoy these small moments of Diwali shopping, the oil bath or the tasting the savories. Are we snatching these moments from them? Sometimes I think…. Now Whenever the children come home , it's our Diwali, we make all the Diwali savories for them, buy new clothes, but the importance of that particular Narak chathurthi day is lost. And yet, just like the Diwali of our dreams reminds us of our close family our tender moments, bringing tears to our eyes, let us ensure that we create memories for our children and they remember it all with a twinkle in their eyes. Happy Diwali t o you !! By- Lata Shivshaankar Dist. ISO
