The primary objective of the IITs, in the words of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was, “to provide scientists and technologists of the highest caliber who would engage in research, design and development to help building the nation towards self reliance in her technological needs”.

IIT produces graduates at different levels: Doctorates, Masters and Bachelors. IITM has produced MBAs in recent years in addition to scien-tists and technologists. The significant growth in the IT as well as non- IT sectors can only be sustained by constant supply of high quality human resources. It is important that our students find jobs suited to their ap-titude and background. Such a matching of challenges in the job with the aptitude of the students is increasingly important in the competitive world of today, where innovation will be the greatest key to growth.

I sincerely hope that our students will use the facilities provided to them by our placement office and find their metier and justify the trust placed in them by our first Prime Minister in helping the Nation in its march towards becoming a developed country. Let me congratulate the Placement Office for their untiring efforts and wish all the students the very best of luck in their attempts to build purposeful careers for them.

Prof. M.S.AnanthDirector IIT Madras

IIT Madras: Introduction

Established in 1959, IIT Madras, an Institute of world-wide repute, has been instrumental in nurturing the dreams and aspirations of some of India’s brightest minds through a mix of intensive curricular and co-curricular activities. The programs at IIT Madras aimed at developing in each student, a mastery of fundamentals, versatility of mind and motivation for learning, have resulted in well-rounded leaders of the highest professional competence. IIT Madras has just celebrated its much awaited Golden Jubilee re-cently. The celebrations started on 31st July and continued throughout the previous year. While the academia marked the event by a slew of international conferences and pres-tigious book and journal releases, the students have played their part by taking their technical and cultural fests to a completely different level. And of course, the month of December saw IITM host the annual Pan-IIT meet whose guest speakers list read like the Who’s Who of the world.

M TechThis programme is offered to

students taken in through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engi-neering). The programme of in-struction for each stream of spe-cialization comprises core courses, elective courses and project work. The student may be required to give one or more seminars and un-dergo industrial/practical training during the programme.

M ScStudents taking this program

are admitted through JAM (Joint Admission Test to M Sc). On an av-erage only 4% of the aspirants who take the test are admitted to the IITs. The 4 semester M Sc program is carefully designed to impart es-sential knowledge in the respec-tive departments with opportuni-ties for specialization in all major areas.

MS & PhDThese research programs in var-

ious disciplines are designed to ca-ter to the needs of industries and laboratories in cutting edge tech-nologies both in basic and applied research on par with international

standards. Interdisciplinary and indus-try specific problems are undertaken to sustain the institution- industry in-teraction. In the first year of curriculum strong foundations on theory are laid down which is followed by a research project. Tentative time taken for the completion of PhD and MS program is four and two years respectively.

MBAThe Department of Management

Studies (DoMS) of IIT Madras offers a two-year, eight-quarter, full time MBA program designed to produce compe-tent managers. The program places emphasis on knowledge of industrial and business domains and the devel-opment of soft skills.

MAThe unique five year integrated pro-

gramme, launched in 2006, leads to Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in three major disciplines – Development Stud-ies, Economics, and English Studies. The MA Programme exposes students to a wide variety of disciplines in the Social Sciences and Humanities, mov-ing on to develop strong analytical, communication and research skills in the relevant stream through applied projects, quantitative subjects and a firm theoretical backing.

B Tech & Dual DegreeThese programmes are offered

by 11 departments to students screened through the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). Renowned for its fierce competition it has an approximately 1.5% acceptance ratio amongst more than 3,00,000 applicants.

B Tech programme is developed to impart fundamentals of profes-sional engineering. The students undergo an internship program in the pre-final year and in the final year they do an engineering proj-ect. Both are necessarily relevant to their academic curriculum.

Dual Degree students will be awarded a B Tech and M Tech de-gree at the end of five years of academic programme. This pro-gramme gives more emphasis on the project work and the students do an exclusive M Tech project in the fifth year. The academic expo-sure includes a variety of courses from professional, humanities, ba-sic sciences and management.

The B.Tech curriculum requires a student to complete at least 165 credits to earn a degree. The re-quirement for dual degree is 195 credits.”

The courses of study are organized on semester programs and each semester pro-vides for a minimum of seventy in-structional days. A number of con-ferences, symposia and workshops are organized in the Institute which attract participation from scholars all over the world.

Summer Internships Pre-final year students of

BTech & Dual Degree courses un-dergo summer internship in vari-ous leading organizations from mid-May to end-July. Such industri-al training provides students with adequate exposure in tackling live problems encountered in working of an industrial entity. Students are also regularly exposed to the latest industry practices through several industry visits. Internships are co-ordinated by the concerned de-partments and student in-charge. You can contact the Academic Af-fairs Secretary at [email protected] for more details.

Departmental & Institute Electives

In order to boost interest in other faculties of technology, the students can take up electives and/or audit courses from departments other than their core area of spe-cialization. Students also take courses in Humanities and Man-agement Sciences to broaden their perspective.

Research at IIT Madras is nur-tured through various academic programmes run by the depart-ments and through sponsored pro-grammes funded by national orga-nizations and the industry.

Academic Research Programs These relate to research work

undertaken by individual faculty or specific research groups in each departmnent running academic programmes leading to M.S or Ph.D degree. Research is carried out by scholars admitted to the programmes of study under the guidance of the faculty in each de-partment.

Sponsored Research and Research based Industrial ConsultancyOrganisation of research by funding projects is undertaken by the faculty. The project details are forwarded to various groups based on the nature of research and the interest shown by Government / Research bodies. Industrial Consultancy provides for faculty of the institute to undertake specific assignments for the Industry, which may include project design, testing and evaluation or even training in new areas of industrial development. This is channeled through the Center for Industrial

Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR)

Paper Publications & Patents Students also publish numerous

scientific papers based on their re-search findings in various revered national and international confer-ences and esteemed journals. At the same time, students, who have devised innovative and pragmatic solutions to modern day prob-lems, are encouraged to file for national and international patents
