The Indian Institute of Planning and Management aims at initiating training

and research on problems of development that must be solved for

realising planned national objectives. Unfortunately education in India has

still remained primarily oriented towards the needs of the private sector and

has overlooked the specific requirements of the

public sector. We have even failed to do justice

to the private sector in as much as we have not

succeeded in impressing upon the students the

basic framework within which the private sector

has to operate in our country. The scope and role

of the private sector in our country, in the context

of national economic planning, is quite distinct

from that of the private sector in the free market

economies originally developed through colonial

exploitation.

Problems of development of the private and the

public sectors are, therefore, to be studied and

analyzed carefully in the background of national

economic planning. Otherwise, we shall not be

able to translate the laudable goals of plans into

physical realities, however sophisticated the

planning models may be. Inspite of the basic

differences that exist between the private and the

public sector, once the strategy for planned

development has been formulated, both the

sectors must draw up their operational plans in a

complementary way to realize the planned

objectives. Otherwise, we may find them working

at cross purposes.

The Indian Institute of Planning

and Management has set before

it the twin tasks: to reorient

education and research towards the needs of

both the sectors and to establish the link between

the national economic planning and the

development of private enterprises in our country.

As an educational institute, we aim at developing

a three dimensional personality in our students,

viz (1) pursuit of knowledge, (2) commitment to

economic, social and cultural upliftment of masses

and (3) cultivation of taste for literature, fine arts

etc. If we succeed, we shall turnout barefoot

leaders and entrepreneurs who are committed to

the masses and are so urgently needed by the

country.

“To be true, I had no idea about how lifeafter IIPM was going to be, though, at IIPMlife was wonderful and full of excitement. Weused to work hard, on projects and cases, attimes wondering how it was going to benefitus in the future. Then, we went for oursummer training and realised that we actuallywere better than all others around becauseof our extensive focus on projects and casebased discussions with less focus given onlecture oriented teaching. After IIPM, I got placed in one of India’slargest information technology organisations.Interactions there made me realise that theextensive focus on economics had made meintellectually superior to all others around. Icouldn’t stick there for long and came backto where I belonged : IIPM. Did my re-search, shared my experiences with thestudents while taking a few classes and nowI am back in the industry, enjoying givingconsulting to some of the top companies inthe country”.

The faculty comprises of more than 250 permanent

members and more than 150 visiting members.

The permanent members of the faculty are mostly

IIPM alumni with exceptional academic records and

industry experience. Roughly 35% of the permanent

faculty at IIPM are women. They are phenomenally

committed to the cause of creating future

entrepreneurial managers with a difference; Managers

who would not only concentrate on profit maximisation

but also on welfare maximisation. They divide their

time among four complementary activities : research,

course development, teaching and consulting. They

devote a lot of time to their students

We need to understand that sustainable growth can be achieved only by committingourselves to macro level growth strategies that would encompass the bottom 80% ofthe population and not just the top 20%. This conscientious approach would makea growth rate of 12% per capita per annum possible. In the light of globalization ofIndian economy and capitulation of Indian brands, it is imperative for tomorrowsleaders to be aware of the above mentioned facts, so that they can face withconfidence the emerging global challenges of international markets, while remainingcommitted to remove massive poverty of Indian masses within a generation... While

some wealthy nations enjoy the luxury of material a plenty, the fact remains that more than twice thenumber of people killed in the 2nd world war die every year of hunger and curable diseases and yet wefail to realise that unrestricted satisfaction of all desires is not conducive to human well being nor is itthe way to happiness or even maximum pleasure. When these wealthy nations today talk of being onewith rest of the world and of concepts of global village, their talks simply stink of hypocrisy. The timehas come for India to lead the way in showing that this carnage can be stopped with the help ofdetermined leadership and long term committed vision... The Indian managers need to develop a strongvision for their companies and most importantly for the people who work for them apart from having aterrific sense of commitment for the country, great motivational skills and leadership qualities. A growthrate of 12% per capita per annum would imply that India can beat U.S.A. in terms of purchasing powerparity within the next 25 to 30 years and become economically the strongest country in the world. Forthis the government of India needs to support the Indian organisations with suitable pro people, pro Indiapolicies which would help Indian organisations to become stronger and compete in the world marketssuccessfully... Future leaders must be aware of this and not remain intellectually handicapped.

not only to help them overcome their professional problems

but also to contribute to their personal development. The

faculty associated with IIPM maintains an exceptional

standard in conducting leading - edge research that is

directly related to course development. Every year new

dimensions are added to the existing class material.

Research has helped IIPM develop its own subjects like

“Beyond Principles of Management and Economics”

wherein students are taught concepts like survival of the

weakest, the law of increasing marginal utility, apart from

the age old concepts of survival of the fittest in the market

economy and law of diminishing marginal utility etc. IIPM

has developed its own model to calculate the contributions

of each member of the society in order to create a just

and equitable society. Ever since its inception, the faculty

focus has been on aspects oriented towards creation of a

more happier as well as a growth oriented society.

Therefore, all seminars conducted at IIPM are on topics

oriented towards growth and well being. The students

thus get a chance not only to learn from the faculty but

also to discuss and debate the concepts they learn with

the decision makers of the economy. The invitees have

comprised amongst others, people like Prof. Md. Yunus

from Bangladesh, who has been applying welfare aspects

of economics to real life situation to single handedly try

and change the future of millions of people in his country

through splendid visionary entrepreneurship which has

resulted into the creation of the internationally acclaimed

“Grameen Bank”.

Inspite of being invited by various

magazines, IIPM has constantly tried

to stay out of various B-Schools

rankings taken out by them. This

stems out of the fact that IIPM

believes that its course contents are

far superior to those of any other

institute in the country. IIPM has

strong reservations on the methodol-

ogy applied by most of the magazines to rank B-schools. Being an insti-

tute totally focussed on quality education and faculty it believes that

educational institutes should be jugded primarily on these grounds (most

of these B-school rankings give a maximum of only 20% to 30%

weightage to the same). However, often magazines take out rankings

without IIPMs participation - based upon student perceptions etc. In such

rankings, IIPM has invariably been in the top 10 to 15 B-schools in

India. In a country with more than 1000 B-schools, this speaks volumes

about IIPMs academic standing.

IIPM is today a front runner when it comes to Industry

Interface between the institute, its faculty, its students and the

corporate world. No wonder it was ranked 4th in the Out-

look survey, in the Industry Interface section. The entire set

of corporate consulting activities are carried out through

Planman Consulting - IIPMs strategic alliance partners for

corporate activities. Planman Consulting also takes care of

the entire range of international alliances, placement activities,

media initiatives, marketing, growth & expansion activities of

IIPM. Planman today employs more than 200 MBAs work-

ing through 10 branches in India, UK & Canada. More than

75% of the consultants at Planman are IIPM graduates.

Through Planman, members of IIPM faculty are always

engaged in numerous consulting assignments which in turn

brings awesome industry exposure into the fourwalls of IIPM

classrooms. Students invariably also become a part of a

large number of industry consulting projects during their stay

at IIPM. Planman further organises executive development

programmes, undertakes T&D activities, HR Consulting,

Marketing Consulting, Market Research, CEO Search, Event

Management, Media Consulting, TV & Film Production in

association with IIPM. Established in 1996 with intellectual

resourcing from IIPM, it is today Indian’s largest multi-

interest Indian multinational management consulting firm. Its

Method of TeachingMethod of TeachingMethod of TeachingMethod of TeachingMethod of Teaching

The Institute uses case study methods (no overemphasis) along with

class lectures to encourage active participation of the students in the

total process of learning. Trimester Project/Research Project/Project

Feasibility Report are essential parts of the curriculum with the aim to

acquaint students with practice so that not only do the students have

a sound theoretical background, but also have a relevant experience

in application of theory to practical situations.

Lecture HoursLecture HoursLecture HoursLecture HoursLecture Hours

No method is a substitute for a rigid academic schedule. To create an

atmosphere of the pressure found in the competitive environment and

long hours of work, the average IIPM full-time students have to

attend a cumulative of more than 1250 contact hours, in addition to

trimester projects (on-the-job training) etc. This is about much more

than what is prescribed for M.B.E. programme.

In New Delhi, IIPM has a sprawling eight storiedbuilding : Old IIPM Tower & a 40,000 sq. ft.building on 1 acre of land : New IIPM Tower, bothin Qutub Institutional Area, the most prestigiousinstitutional area in the country. They are equippedwith an airconditioned auditorium, conference room, three computer dromes, a library spread over onewhole floor etc. apart from airconditioned classroomsand canteen. Similar IIPM Towers withexceptional facilities are also there in Bandra,Mumbai as well as in Chennai, Pune, Bangalore,Hyderabad & Ahmedabad.

Delhi classes are also held in our campus in SouthDelhi, just 15 minutes from AIIMS, New Delhi. Itspreads across more than 5 acres of lush green. It isamazingly beautiful. Needless to say, it is the largestCampus amongst institutes of its kind in Delhi. It hasfacilities for Billiards, Pool, Mini Golf, Tennis etc. Thearchitecture is from the era bygone, with a Scottishflavour. The castle type buildings, mysteriouslylocated between lush green landscapes and thickwoods, provide the ideal setting for academicpursuits.

The IIPM Campus in Gurgaon, is our residentialcampus meant mainly for research activities etc.Unlike other national institutes, our residential campus(which looks like a rural hermitage) has been de-signed to incorporate the ideal of austere and simpleliving and to help inculcate non-elitist attitude. Set inthe idyllic green surroundings of the countryside, faraway from the noise and pollution of the metropolitancity, it is an ideal place for academicians to concen-trate on research. It is equipped with a swimmingpool apart from facilities for various sports. Researchfellows may opt to live in campus hostels. Campushostel accommodation is also available for partici-pants of short-duration Rural DevelopmentProgrammes. Faculty Development Programme,Executive Development Programmes etc.

Students coming from various states can opt for

the residential accomodation offered by IIPM. Past

experience indicates that students living in small

groups of two under the care and supervision of

landlords’ families are able to devote more time to

studies than students living in large groups in cam-

pus hostels. After hectic class hours, students also

enjoy relatively quiet family atmosphere during the

evenings. The Institute has, therefore, arranged for

simple and ordinary rooms scattered throughout

the cities where it has its branches, to provide

residential accommodation to students. Only such

accommodation is available to students who may

need it. Female students will be refunded propor-

tionate seat rent whenever their guardians arrange

for their accommodation on their own.

IIPM is the only institute in India to have contributed to Indian management and understanding of Indian economy through a #1 best selling book -

is releasing soon. Concepts like the iconoclastic “Theory ‘i’ Management”, “Happy Capitalism”, “Survival of the Weakest”, “Law of Increasing Marginal Utility” and “The Trickle-Up Theory” originated at IIPM and are taught to students at all the branches of IIPM by Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri himself. To maintain uniformity of academic standards in all its branches, many of IIPMs star professors travel to all the branches of IIPM to take classes.

It has been observed that MBA Leveleducation is offered to students of allgraduation streams (History, Biology,Geography, Engineering etc.) therefore, making it obvious that MBA educationacademically, has got nothing to do withgraduation. Thus, IIPM pioneered thisthree year full time programme forstudents after 10+2 wherein, they dothe same course that the post graduatestudents do in the second and third yearof their course. In the first year abridge course in management is given tothem, so that they become more ca-pable of competing with the graduatestudents in the second and third year oftheir studies.

GLOBAL OPPORTUNITY & THREAT ANALYSIS (GOTA)

In the light of globalization, students entering IIPM have to undergo a study tour to a selectedcountry in Australia, Africa, Asia, America, Europe or China. For the Two Year studentsGOTA is typically between 8/10 days while for the Three Year students GOTA lasts for about17/21 days depending upon flight availability etc.Students however can extend this trip on their ownexpense. IIPM bears the entire cost of thisprogramme for all students. This cost includes cost ofair travel (from the nearest international airport) toabroad and back as well as the entire cost ofboarding, lodging, food and faculty. Students have toobtain passport and visa for the country of theirvisit. If they are not given a visa IIPM can not beheld responsible. During the programme the studentsare taught a special paper on Global Opportunityand Threat Analysis with assistance from faculty ofthe country visited, whenever available. The idea is tomake the students aware of how a truly globaleconomy works and also to bring a fresh outlook tolife conducive to entrepreneurial learning.

Students would be sent in study groups of minimum15. The students should note that they do not havethe choice to decide which country to visit. Theinstitute’s faculty members would decide the same.During the course apart from classes students arealso taken around the city for sight seeing as well asindustry visits.

When all the students come back after their visits tovarious countries they share their experiences and the knowledge gained from the interactionswith the other students of the institute. This creates an intellectually stimulating and excitingenvironment in the campus and students get a first hand experience of how things work inother countries. During the GOTA visits IIPM has conducted seminars and lectures inassociation with organisations/institutions like : IMD, Lausanne ; The United Nations ; ILO; The World Bank ; Geneve Financial Centre ; Credit Suisse ; Nestle ; Insead ; IMI,Europe etc.

Trimester Project/Project Feasibility Report

Each student has to write a project to justify the award

of testimonial/certificate/title. This should show that the

student is capable of scientific analysis of a problem and

can approach the solution for the same in a systematic

manner. The projects must provide sufficient indication

that the student is competent to assimilate skills acquired

in various disciplines for successful application to solve a

complex problem. Normally a student works in an

organisation on a practical assignment for about three to

nine months. He writes a project report connected with

practical assignment. (See also placement service).

Projects can also be completed on the basis of research

materials available in libraries. Apart from the above

there are various other projects and training assignments

which are compulsory for all students at IIPM, as will be

clear in the following project distribution table.

Each year more than 150 companies cometo campus to make presentations and to

interview students. For the same purpose IIPMhas offices in Delhi as well as in Mumbai, Ban-galore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Toronto &London.

Last year saw a record of more than 200 com-panies visiting the IIPM campus for placements(see ALUMNI & PLACEMENTS page forfurther details). All the eligible students who re-quired placements got placed from the campusitself. It has been observed that more than 70%of each class usually accepts offers from compa-nies that recruit on campus. Many students useIIPM resources to conduct networked jobsearches, targetting smaller companies, entre-preneurial ventures, and not-for-profitorganisations.

The Institute’s placement service assists eligiblestudents in securing suitable jobs/trimesterprojects. For this purpose the office keeps ef-fective contacts with firms all over India, main-tains and performs liaison work between pos-sible employers and the Institute’s students (stu-

dent must, however, note that the Institute isa place for serious aca-demic pursuit and not anagency to provide em-ployment). No fee ischarged for the serviceand no binding obliga-tion to find a job/trimes-ter project for any stu-dent is accepted by theInstitute.

Students, opting to become entrepreneursafterwards, are entitled to consultancy service ofthe Institute at a nominal cost throughout theiractive life.

IIPMs Admission teat E-PAT (Entrepreneurship & Planning Admission Test) is based upon a written test, group discussion and interview. Unlike CAT, IIPM’s admission test E-PAT is based more on parameterspertaining to EQ (Emotional Quotient) and overall personality mapping since it has been globallyobserved that high IQ often takes a backseat to high EQ when it comes to Entrepreneurship, Managementand dealing with human beings. Thus, the total scores of the written test, group discussion and personalinterview are compiled together to compose the final score. Success in E-PAT is more likely to make youa better future leader than success in any other examination focused primarily on IQ. E-PAT is conductedthroughout India in more than 15 centres.

The Institute was registered as an EducationalInstitute under Society’s Registration Act

1860. However, the Institute is neither affiliated toany University nor has sought de-jure recognitionfor its Academic Programmes from any statutorybody. Hence, the Institute is an academically inde-pendent and self-financed autonomous body. IIPMconducts Two Year/Three Year Programmes inEntrepreneurship.

Acceptance/Recognition (de-facto) of Institute’sacademic programme is indicated by the list ofcompanies which have so far offered placement/Summer/Semester projects to IIPM students. TheInstitute is also listed by Government of India,Ministry of Labour in Career Information Series aswell as by private bodies which counsel on educa-tional opportunities (e.g. Career and CompetitionTimes-a Times of India Publication, November,1991). The Institute is known for its uniqueprogrammes in Planning and Entrepreneurship.

IIPM conducts its own programme in Planning &Entrepreneurship (a non professional course). Be-cause of inclusion of subjects related to NationalEconomic Planning and our effort to integrate themwith various functions of an Entrepreneur, (who hasto lead a team of Executives specialized in diversefields), our two-year programme’s de-jure recog-nition as equivalent to any degree is superfluous forany judgement on academic standing of the Insti-tute. Students, who are concerned about statutoryrecognition, need not apply for the programme.

The Institute reserves the right to emphasise thisdifference in approach and maintain its academicindependence.

The Institute reserves the right to change the re-quirement for admission, graduation, content ofcourses, fees charged or to make any other suit-able modification should these be deemed neces-sary in the interest of the Institute. All disputes areto be settled in Delhi Courts only.

The Institute also reserves the right to drop anyprogramme on account of administrative and otherconstraints. If a course is dropped before com-mencement of the programme, students will be re-funded all fees paid by them. If a course is droppedin the middle of the programme due to circum-stances beyond the control of the Institute, stu-dents will be refunded (after one year) fees paid inadvance for the remaining part of the programme. If a course is however, dropped in the middle ofthe programme due to students’ agitation, etc. feespaid by the students will not be refunded.

The Institute will, however, try to help innocentstudents to complete interrelated courses (equiva-lent to atleast 66 credits) through correspondencematerials (and, if possible, through occasional con-tact programmes) in order to avoid disturbance ofacademic atmosphere by unwanted elements.

Any concession achieved from the managementunder coercion will not be regarded as binding onthe Institute.

It is my pleasure and privilege to state that I have been associated with The IndianInstitute of Planning and Management (IIPM) since its inception. I have myself grownwith the Institute, as a teacher, as a friend and philosopher to Prof. Chaudhuri andvarious batches of students over years since 1973. Based on my long, association withIIPM, I state that the courses taught at the Institute cover not only regular MBA curricu-lum, but also additional inputs of Economics with special emphasis on macro levelplanning and National Economic Management, which have bearing on corporatemanagement... At the current state of environment when we talk about global businessmanagement, this additional load on students are thus exposed to a variety of subjectsin greater detail. In view of this. I have no hesitation in admittingthat the IIPM course is superior to any regular Post Gradu-ate Diploma/Degree Course exclusively focussed on justMBA curriculum.Dr. M. Adhikari, 6th of March 1995 (when he was Dean, Faculty ofManagement Studies, University of Delhi).

... the course content of the Planning and Management Programme of The IndianInstitute of Planning and Management covers all the subjects taught in MBA course inthe Indian Universities. In additional, the course content of IIPM included 16 and abovecredit courses to integrate the management programme with specialization in Na-tional Economic Planning. I have no hesitation to say that IIPM’stwo year programme in Planning and Management is su-perior to standard MBA courses.Dr. N.R.Chatterjee, 10th of July 1980 (when he was Dean, Faculty ofManagement Studies, University of Delhi).

...The Indian Institute of Planning and Management covers all the subjects normallytaught in MBA course in addition to 31 credits course in Economics... the IIPMprogramme in Planning and Management is considered superior to stan-dard MBA courses.Dr. P.K.Jain, 20th of August 1995 (when he was the Head, Department ofManagement Studies, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi).

The course content of The Planning and Management Programme of IIPM covers allthe subjects normally taught in MBA courses in addition to 32 credit course in Eco-nomics to integrate the programme with specialization in National Economic Plan-ning... IIPM programme in Planning and Management may be consideredsuperior to standard MBA courses.Dr. Utpal K.Banerjee, 12th November 1996 (Renowned Consultant andAdvisor on Information Technology and Ex-Advisor to A.I.C.T.E.).

Being totally focussed on

academics and research,

IIPM has constantly made

news due to the right rea-

sons. More than one

thousand articles on IIPM/

quoting IIPM have come out

in the print media and faculty

of IIPM have made hundreds

of appearances in the elec-

tronic media. Every year the

Director of IIPM Dr. M. K.

Chaudhuri presents budget

alternatives before the actual

budget is declared. IIPMs

original research work has

been time and again quoted

in various articles. Rarely an

article on management edu-

cation/mangement consulting

comes out in the media which

does not quote the Dean of

IIPM, Prof. Arindam

Chaudhuri ! He has been a

columnist with various

newspapers and magazines

including The Hindustan

Times apart from regularly

contributing for The Times of

India as well. He is regularly

various programmes in the

electronic media and has been

featured in programmes like

Movers & Shakers. His views

on the budget every year are

exclusively telecast on ZEE

NEWS on the day before the

budget as well as on the day of

the budget. Other faculty

members of IIPM are also

actively quoted in the media -

both print and electronic. The

Times of India in 2001 and The

Hindustan Times in 2002

organised seminars exclusively

with faculty of IIPM in various

cities of India - something that

they both had never done with

any other management institute

before. The Economic Times

featured IIPMs research contri-

bution to Indian management -

“Theory ‘i’ Management” in a

front page cover story. Prof.

Arindam Chaudhuri has been

featured in the cover stories of

the sunday supplements of The

Hindustan Times as well as The

the cover stories of various

other newspapers and maga-

Classes apart...The sense of

community atIIPM is very

strong. It startsin the section -

the group of about 60 class mateswith whom students spend their first

three Trimesters, working togetherin small study groups, on team

projects, and in the class room. Butit extends beyond the bounds of the

class room as well, in therelationships built through club

activities, and other extra curricularactivities like the annual festival,

rightly named A-maze. Therollicking rock show and the

glittering allIndia fashion

showcompetition too,

form a part ofit...
