The new breed of young IIM simbibes the culture of academic rigour and research standard set by older IIMs. IIM Rohtak was established as the 8th IIM to supplement the nurture of talent and development of managers who are adept at managing global challenges. It was visualized as an Institute that would enable cross-cultural adaptation and possess right ingredients of technical and managerial skills to combat fast changing economic and financial structures and systems.

The IIM Society, Rohtak, was registered on November 16, 2009, under, like other IIMs, the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The foundation stone of IIM Rohtak was laid on October 1, 2010 by Union Minister of Human Resources Development Mr. KapilSibal. Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister of Haryana and Mr. Deepender Singh Hooda, Member of Parliament, Rohtak were also present at the ceremony. To establish the IIM at Rohtak, the Government of Haryana provided 200 acres of land free of cost in the scenic ambience of the Sunaria Village at Rohtak. Earlier new campus site was at village Garnavati, which was rejected due to technical resaons.

The Institute has received several accolades through its constituents. It has developed a strong research culture, with several of its faculty members frequently publishing in internationally reckoned outlets. The Institute has plans to do much more in the years to come.
