LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

For the past few weeks in my bulletin letter I have been sharing various aspects of our future “Christ Cathedral” that will be situated at the former Crystal Cathedral campus in Garden Grove. I complete this series with some concluding questions and answers:

How did our future “Christ Cathedral” get its name?

The future name for our new Cathedral emerged out of a wonderful process that began with Bishop Tod Brown asking the people of the Diocese to submit to him what name would be appropriate for the new Cathedral. Over 3000 responses were received. The decision was announced at the conclusion of the ordination to the priesthood ceremony this past June. Both the simplicity and clarity of this title con-veys the fact that Christ is indeed the “cornerstone” of the Church. Additionally, in light of the fact that this will be an historic transformation of a Protestant Church into a Catholic Cathedral, there is an ecumenical dimension to this title. While we sadly acknowledge the divisions in the Christian Church, the Second Vatican Council focused on the commonality of baptismal dignity that all Christians share, since all Christians are made new in Christ through the life giving waters of this Sacrament. While Christ Cathedral will indeed be the mother Church of our Diocese, its doors will be open in hospitality to all who come to experience the presence of a God who calls all to share in His life and love.

How are we going to pay for our new Cathedral and campus?

While the diocese purchased the Garden Grove Crystal Cathedral campus for $ 57,000,000 a large percentage of this money was borrowed in order to acquire the campus. Repayment as well as costs associated with preparing the site as well as renovating the Cathedral will come from various sources. The diocese intends to sell the present central administrative offices, Marywood, that is located in Orange. Proceeds from the sale of this property and buildings will help to defray the costs associated with the move to the new campus. However, the major portion of the funds will come from a Diocesan Capital Campaign that will commence in January 2013. This will be the first time that our diocese em-barks on a diocesan wide capital campaign. This will be different from the yearly Pastoral Services Appeal Campaign. The goal of the upcoming Diocesan Capital Campaign will be between $ 80,000,000 to $ 100,000,000. While a certain portion of these monies will be earmarked for our new Cathedral com-plex, monies from the campaign will also be used to support Catholic Schools, Retired Priests as well as Catholic Charities here in the Diocese. How will the Campaign work? Aside from donations that lead donors might give to the campaign, each parish will be asked to raise one year of ordinary income that can be pledged over a four to five year period of time. For Mission Basilica parish that amount will be $ 1, 521,000.00. For every dollar raised in this campaign at the parish level, 25% will return to the parish for its own needs. Any monies received over and beyond our goal, 50% will be returned to the parish for its own needs! Working with our Parish Finance Council as well as with Guidance in Giving the pro-fessional development firm that the Diocesan has retained to assist in this important campaign, a parish committee will assist me in orchestrating this historic campaign here in the parish beginning in January of 2013. There will be no Pastoral Services Appeal Campaign in 2013. Monies earmarked for the 2013 PSA will be rolled into the Capital Campaign goal.

My friends, as a local Church, we poised to enter a new, exciting and challenging chapter for our Diocese. As we prayerfully await the appointment of our new Bishop, we additionally prepare to transform a site that

Make it a Priority in your Family!!! Three Year Olds through 8th Grade

Religious education is important for children because that is where they first make connections between the Catholic faith and their identity as people called to our faith. It is where they first begin to understand what it means to belong to a community of believers. The Catholic Church believes that parents are the primary religious educators of their children and that the role of the parish is to assist them. Therefore, you are invited to enroll your child/children into one of our wonderful Mission Basilica programs for this school year. We are accepting registrations right now. The office is open from Monday through Thursday from 9 AM – 5 PM. You need to bring the certificate of baptism and $25 deposit. Classes begin the second week of September. Religious Education classes are held on • Sunday from 10:30 AM- 12 noon for grades Pre-K-5th; or • Monday from 5 - 6:30 PM for grades K-8. Registrations fees are: $ 80.00 (Sacramental preparation) 105.00 (6-8 grades, Sacramental preparation plus EDGE Retreat) 45.00 (Non-sacramental prep.: Pre-K, Kinder and post-communion prep))

Jr. High Youth Ministry!

All 6th, 7th & 8th graders are invited to sign up for EDGE! We meet each Monday night, and YOU will have FUN! EDGE combines a unique model of for-mation: Friendships, Faith, Music, Community, and Service – Utilizing the Catechism each step of the way! Sign up today! Call the Religious Education Office at 234-1370 or Gonzo at (949)234-1374

The Religious Education Program

needs YOU!

The heart of our program is the dedication of our cate-chists and their willingness to share their faith with our children. For our program to function, we need cate-chists and volunteers each week! We are very grateful to the wonderful catechists and volunteers who have already signed up for the fall! There are catechist oppor-tunities for pre-K grade through eight grade classes. Training is provided for this ministry, which is open to any Catholic who has been confirmed, is actively practic-ing his or her faith, and is in good standing with the Church. Classes are Mondays, 5:00 PM, and Sundays, 10:30 AM. Please prayerfully consider joining us in this very important teaching ministry. If you are interested in becoming a Catechist or an assistant, please call the Reli-gious Education office at (949) 234-1370 or email Juanita Villalobos at [email protected] for further information.

SPONSOR NEEDED

“My name is Clinton Salmon. I am a baptized Catholic who is seeking to complete the sacra-ments of confirmation and Eucharist. During my prepara-tion I will need to have a spon-sor, someone who can help guide me along the path. If you are willing to help me, I would be very grateful.” What is an RCIA sponsor? This is someone who is will-ing to “walk alongside” a candidate seeking to complete the sacraments. RCIA sessions are held on Sunday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Qualifications of a sponsor include the following: Full sacramental initiation and a willingness to be of service to the Lord. If you are willing to give a little of your time and you feel that the Lord is calling you to share your faith, please contact Eileen Smith at [email protected] or 949-234-1354 for further information.

OUR NEW CATHEDRAL – TRANS-

FORMING THE CRYSTAL CATHEDRAL

INTO CHRIST CATHEDRAL

Join Msgr. Art for breakfast and a special presentation on our new cathedral. Msgr. Art will offer some reflec-tions on the important role of a cathedral in every dio-cese and specifically what is taking place to transform the former “Crystal” Cathedral into our new “Christ Cathedral.” There will be ample time for questions in regard to this important and significant chapter in the history of our diocese. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 – Breakfast with Msgr. Art from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Presentation following breakfast from 10:30 to 11:30 AM MISSION PASTORAL CENTER, ROOM D. Free will offering.
