PATCHWORKS II Blue Valley Quilters Guild - June 2017 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Summer is always a busy time for Parents & Grandparents. Here's my challenge for the summer. Let's all dedicate ourselves to sewing on at least one charity quilt a month. Last month you totally surprised our charity quilt chairman by bringing in a clothes line of finished quilts. We will be showing off the quilts on the stage at each meeting so don't let the line be empty. Maybe you can sew with a grandchild or neigh- bor child who would love to create a quilt to give to Safe Home. NOTE:we are looking for volunteers to help Janette at the meeting. Let me know if you would be interested in helping. A former member, Natalie Kenny, passed away in February. She had made a request that her red, white & blue fabric go to "Quilts of Valor". Along with that donation there are several UFOsthat we will be wanting a home. They should make good charity quilts. Thanks to the family for their donation to us. I know all of us are anxiously waiting the quilt festival. Please, please signup to help. We need each one of you to volunteer your time and all it takes is working two shifts and $10 of your ticket will be covered by the guild. See you at the June meeting. I'm borrowing (well, taking ....Ok, Ok, I'm stealing) an idea from the Starlight Guild.

Recently, while helping a customer at my quilt shop job, I found out this customer is a member of theStarlight Guild. While talking, she described an activity, that has the potential of engagingall members.Members can choose to participate. I knowyou are asking "What is it?"

H~/$ HOWIT 408$?

Anyone that wants to participate, will pick up directions at the June meeting. This firsttime, you will have until the August meeting to complete the block using the theme or acolor scheme that was asked for.

Turn in your completed block at the August meeting. Everyone that turns in a completedblock, will have their nameplaced in a hat, The namedrawn will take all of the blockshome.

Sound like fun? To get you started, here is a picture of the first block.

$TA2 Of me vee:And because I like blue, the first color

scheme will be white on white/blue. Lightblue, dark blue, sky blue, they will all work.

Pick a white on white fabric to contrastwith the blue, and start sewing.

We have a large quild with the potential for lots of blocks to be turned in. Depending onhow many participants we have, we may divide the blocks and have more than one winner.

Instructions will be handed out at the June meeting.

Sit & Stitch WorkshopsSit & Stitch meets most every 2nd & 4th Thursdaysof each month at Rose Estates, I27th & Antioch. Each Thursday there is either a workshop led by aBVQG member or a time for members to comeand sew on their own projects. Arrival time is 9:30with workshops starting at lOAM. Participantsbring their lunch. BVQG members are always welcome to come even if they are not signedup for a workshop. Sit & Stitch is a good way to get acquainted with other members.

Ifyou have questions concerning Sit & Stitch please contact Wilma Lamfers,

This month is a very important time for the Sit & Stitch workshops. May I Ithworkshop might have been just a little unusual. Rose Estates is clearing out unused equipment - among them lots of drapes. As we were about to setup for theworkshop, one of the maintenance workers entered the room and said "come, fabric". He is of the thinking that we can use the drapes. Well at the end of dis-cussions, we said yes to the lighter colored fabric and eventually Chelly Kingclaimed the heavier drapes and she will be making pillow case covers for a preschool. Guess when you get a bunch of quilters together they can solve all fabric ques-tions. Janette Sheldon just be prepared as we will be approaching you with some fabric.

Looking ahead to Thursday, May 25th Sit & Stitch workshop will be helping the 2017 Boutique Committee price and pack allof the items for the festival boutique.

A reminder that there will not be workshops in June.Have fun at the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival both working and shopping.

The next workshop will be Thursday, July 27th. We started signup for this workshop at the May meeting and will continue to do so at the June meeting. RosalynDouglass will be leading this Sit & Stitch "Stitch & Fold" workshop. You must purchase the $8 pattern plus the workshop fee of $5 for a total of $13. Get signedup, pay the fee and receive the supply list.

The Mentoring New Member team would like to welcomeour 2 new MayMembers

Rosanna Smith and Patty VViliiamsPlease seek out these ladies at the next meeting and welcome themto our group.

As a new member to BVQG,if you have questions about our eventsbe sure to catch us at the welcome table each month.

Chelly King, MNM Chair

Gayla Spurlock

What do these two new members have incommon?

Both of them took homea Charity Quilt ontheir first day as members of BVQG!

Thank you & welcome, ladies!

Describing herself as goal-driven, RosannaSmith is a self-taught quiIter. She beganjust six years ago by watching televised quilt programs and taking online Craftsyclasses. It is the process of creating a quilt top that Rosannaenjoys most; fabric/color selection, cutting, and piecing. She happily employs long arm quilters andprofesses that handwork, including hand-stitching a binding is not her thing! Rosannahas tons of friends, none of whomare quilters. She found BVQG online and will enjoyinspiration from and new friendships with other passionate quilters. Rosannais aprolific reader, belonging to three book clubs! Just last September she retired as aRegional Director of Marketing for Assisted Living Communities, so now Rosannahastime to read more and to cultivate her quilting craft.

Patty Smith introduced herself to BVQG by participating in May's Show and Tell! Herquilting roots began in Sumner, MO some thirty years ago. It was there that sheserved as Narrator for the yearly Sumner, MO Quilt Show; an event where hundredsof quilts from the surrounding area were brought for a kind of Show and Tell. Patty isa retired nurse, serving in the area of case management for corporate workers'compensation cases. Having lived in Santa Fe, NM for nine years, Patty has justreturned to the area where she joins other family members. Traditional quilting isPatty's forte. She loves applique but tends to become bored with it so saves thattechnique for small projects. Patty was invited to BVQG by PamAcciacca. She has apassion for service projects and is looking forward to the inspiration from ourcommunity of quilters.

Our newest Quilt Angel is so generous with her time and has a passion forservice. This lady has one infectious smile. She smiles and radiates her care foryou regardless of the message she is delivering. We are the ones that benefitfrom her generosity!

Yes, she is a beautiful quilter. She has been so busy helping us that she doesn'ttake the time to show her quilts, but does BEAUTIFUL work! Hopefully, we will beable to see more of her work as she becomes more available to make and showus her projects.

This special person has served in herposition in service to the Guild for 4

years! She stands behind/alongside a table during everybreak to answer questions. She tells people about offeringsand explains what they need to provide. She promotes theSit' n Stitch classes with passion and love. When the class isfull, she checks to see if there is a possibility of just ONEMORE PERSON who could be admitted to the class. OR, shelooks into the possibility of adding another session to makesure all of us get to take that class we all have a hankering totake.

Imagine, for 4 years, she has been our Sit & Stitch classcoordinator. We are SO grateful for her help, her PATIENCE,her dedication, and her expertise in keeping us happy.

It is my pleasure and privilege to introduce our newest QuiltAngel ...

Ginger Bowsher.

Oh, but wait! I have more to say! SURPRISE!

We are SO fortunate in Blue Valley Quilters Guild to have SO MANY people who are so talented and give of themselves toall of us! Without everyone's generosity and giving spirit, we wouldn't be the caring guild we have become known to be.

This lady is a beautiful sewist. She makes Beautiful things. We get to see her at Sit'n Stitch and also at Guild Show'n Tell(although being the shy and reserved person she is, she doesn't go up very often). Her workmanship is stellar.

for the report? With the twenty-seven quilts I just delivered, we have now sent Safe Homeuilts this year. With the five Chelly King has sent to Children's Mercy, our total is Ninety-one.first half of the year. Unfortunately I know the pattern in the past has been to receive morewinter months than in the summer months. Guess that means to hit my pie in the sky goal of, we all need to get busy. I will continue to bring loads that need to be quilted. If we don't fin

SO, we have another Quilt Angel to recognize.

This person also has a very giving heart. She makes sure we aresuper charged about everything that is going on! She makes surewe are plugged in with everything we want to do. She winds us upso we are excited about engaging in all the activities. Regardless ofher schedule, she presses on to make sure we are taken care of.

She attends almost every Sit'n Stitch with a car overflowing with hermany bins! She attends all the retreats. She is a quiet person andgets an unimaginable number of things done. Yes, she has mademany of the Sew Together Bags!

This person has given of herself (and her car) for 4 years. She hastransported all the cords, power strips, tape, irons, ironing boards, and everything else we could ever want from event to event. Whatwould we have done without her.

Oh, I see I only told you it was ONE person! No. MY MISTAKE! Thisis a very special recognition. Today we have the honor ofrecognizing two very special Quilt Angels.

It is my pleasure and privilege to introduce our

FIRST Quilt Angel Duo -

ClaudiaWorcester and Marianne Lafex.

Diaspora: Journey to SanctuaryMary Kay Fosnacht

From an ordered society with abundant foodand water, reflected in blues and greens, acatastrophic event occurs. Turmoil ensues(red) and a darkness falls over the people asthey lose their loved ones, their homelandand their way of life. (Panel I)

The survivors journey to a place of refugewhere turmoil continues in the form of unsanitary conditions and lack of food and water. The dismal conditions are portrayed inthe dark colors. Survivors are compelled to

'---------' keep moving but many attempts to escape the"refuge" are unsuccessful. (Panel 2)

As the survivors rise out of oppression they find other ordered societies reject them. They push on until they are allowed sanctuary where their sojourn begins. (Panel 3)

The quilting is a reflection of the circumstances from disordered and organic to organized. The background invokes theidea of a global map suggesting the global implications ofdisplaced people.

Best Lemon Sheet CakeIngred ients

Cake• 1 box duncan hines moist deluxe lemon

cake mix• 1 cup buttermilk• 1 3 oz lemon instant pudding mix; dry

Icing• 4 cups Confectioners Sugar• 1/3 cup lemon juice; bottled• 3 T Vegetable oil• 3 T water

instructions

1. In large bowl, stir together dry cake mix and pudding mix.2. In another bowl, combine all wet ingredients and eggs that the cake mix calls for plus the

buttermilk.(where your box reads the amount of water (1 1/3 cup usually), put in 1 cupwater and 1/3 cup lemon juice to make the cake even more lemon tasting, if you like) Beatwith mixer until blended.

3. Add to dry mixture and beat until combined.4. Bake in a greased 9x13 baking pan in a preheated 350 degree oven for the time the cake mix

box calls for ...depending on your oven.5. It will require a couple minutes longer baking time than cake mix box calls for because of the

extra moisture produced by the milk.6. Stick a toothpick in the center to check for doneness.7. ICING: Combine water, oil, powdered sugar and lemon juice with a mixer until smooth.8. Add one more tablespoon of water if consistency isn't saucy.9. "Glaze" the cake when just a little cooled.
