A. THE DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON



1. CREATED IN THE IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF GOD



Gen 1:26-28Then God said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, andand over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.God created man in his image, in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.God blessed them, saying, “Be fertile and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth.”



MAN APPEARS AS THE FIRST CREATURE THAT ISCONSCIOUS OF WHERE HE HAS COME FROMAND OF THE POTENTIALITIES OPEN TO HIM



Image of God• Capacity to know and love back: Of all the visible

creatures only man is “able to know and love his creator.”

• Important in himself/ herself: He is “the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake,”

• Sharer in God’s own life: And he alone is called to share, by knowledge and love, in God’s own life.- CCC 356



Man’s likeness to God is not only in his reason but also in his responsible conduct. He has the capacity to respond

freely to the call of God.



BECAUSE OF THIS REALITY OF MAN, CARE MUST BE TAKEN THAT THERE BE NO MANIPULATION

THAT MAKES MAN LESS HUMAN THAT VIOLATES THE DIGNITY OF HIS PERSONALITY MADE TO THE

IMAGE OF GOD.

Genesis 2:7

TO BELIEVE IN GOD AS CREATOR IS TO LOOK UPON COSMIC EVOLUTION AS GOD’S

CONTINUING ACTION



TO AFFIRM GOD AS CREATOR IS TO HIGHLIGHT MAN’S

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

ALL HUMAN ACTIVITIES ARE SEEN AS EXPRESSIONS OF THE CREATIVE,

IMMANENT AND PERSONAL ACTION OF GOD



2. MAN IS FALLEN, BUT REDEEMED BY CHRIST



Genesis 3:6

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat”



FROM THE DAWN OF HISTORY, MAN ABUSED HIS FREEDOMSET HIMSELF AGAINST GOD AND

SOUGHT TO FIND FULFILLMENT APART FROM GOD.



AS A CONSEQUENCE, MAN BECAME AWARE OF HIS LIMITATIONS AND HIS ABILITY TO BECOME WHAT HE OUGHT AND DESIRES TO BECOME.

MAN’S REASON HAS BEEN CLOUDED AND HIS WILL WEAKENED BY SIN

AND THUS THE IMAGE OF GOD HAS BEEN DISTORTED.



THROUGH THE INCARNATION

GOD HAS ENTERED HUMAN HISTORY

AND RESTORED THE IMAGE OF GOD IN MAN.



Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of

works, lest any man should boast”



3. TEMPLE AND INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT



You know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God, don't you? You do not belong to yourselves,

4. CALLED TO A NOBLE DESTINY



THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO GOD’S CALL MUST INVOLVE ENTRUSTING ONESELF COMPLETELY TO

THE LORD.



THIS IS A DESTINY GOING BEYOND THE CAPACITY OF MAN, HENCE IT IS CALLED SUPERNATURAL.

CHRISTIAN LIFE CONSISTS IN CONFORMING TO THE WORKINGS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN

THE DEPTHS OF MAN’S HEART.
