Anne Murray oozes confidence! I've beenfortunate to see Anne Murray in concert atCarnegie Hall, twice at Radio City MusicHall and in Vancouver and Halifax, andperhaps another half dozen locations over hercareer. Each time I see her I'm just amazed athow fresh and appealing her act is, and I'mabout as fidgety as any concert -goer. Sheholds her audience with an incredibleconfidence, even making perilous forays intoaudience talk -backs. Her Toronto opening, needless to say, was packed, and these were,

for the most part, hard-core Murray fans, who have followed her career for years. Herpixie -like facial expressions were beautifullyexecuted and her timely, off-the-cuff, "tit"remark, caught the audience off guard, butwas obviously a well -thought-out strategic"slip of the lip" that brought her even closerto her fans. I understand Poison, who were toplay Toronto the next day, made a desperate, last minute phone call, resulting in seats forher opening . . . a rare chance to see a realtrouper in action. Many a young performerwould do well to see the lady strut her stuff.(EC: Here! Here!)
Country is on a roll! This year will be a veryimportant year for country music, particularly Cancon country. Canadiansongwriters have never written better, andnever sounded better. It's a wide open marketand with the Variety Club Salute toCanadian Country, followed by the BigCountry Awards, the stage is set for a verygood summer and fall. Watch for morecrossover action by some of our very talentedyoung country stars . . . and some of theradio barons are taking a second look at thelooseness of the regulations when it comes toprogramming country. (EC: I'm sold!)
Capitol does it right . . . ! I'venoticed lately that, when it comes tothrowing launch parties and artist receptions,Capitol has the top list for locations withambience and panache. Imagine a receptionin the Three Small Rooms of the very elegantWindsor Arms Hotel, one of Toronto's lastbastions of good taste. Meeting their , newGerman artist, Herbert Gronemeyer, in thattype of lushness, leaves a very lastingimpression . . . and isn't that what thesereceptions are supposed to do! (EC: Whatabout the Hot Stove Lounge . . . ?)
A very sincere thank you! Although it'sbeen over a few weeks, I still get plaudits forthe 25th Anniversary celebration of RPM.There is much praise for the Sunshine Coachthat was bought for the Variety Club on mybehalf. What a thrill it was for me, the otherday, to see the coach, with my name on it andpacked with youngsters, driving upBrentcliffe Road (EC: Aw . . shucks!) Andthere was also much praise for the meal thatthe Inn on the Park put together for thatevening. I want to particularly thank LinoFerreira of the Inn for the cooperationfrom both him and his staff. Seasons DiningRoom at the Inn continues to be one of theprestigious eating places for people in theindustry and many stars want to stay at theInn. Klaus Tenter, the General Manager, is aprince of an innkeeper and, because of him, many industry functions take placethere . . . and many more should. Both of theBig Country events coming up, are at the Inn,and they promise to be equally well handledby this very professional staff. (EC: We takeour hat off to the Inn on the Park!) Thanksguys!
When it's quiet ... look out! All's quiet onthe Western Front . . . as they used to say, butone of my "deep -throats" tells me there willbe some good news . . . and some bad news,to hit the fan before summer is out. (EC: Is itgoing to be another lawyer's battle . . . ?)
Watch for takeover action . . . ! No, it'snot crossover action, it's takeover time.Watch for some very interesting news to hitthe fan about a takeover that didn't seempossible. Oh! there was some talk about it acouple or three years ago, but it was passedoff as just another rumour. (EC: I think it'sjust another rumour . . . started in someone'sboardroom!)
More deserved internal moves ... ? Nextweek we will be hearing about a few more, well deserved moves within the industry, andall of them internal moves. (EC: That's thekey . . . looking inward!)
How's that for timing ... ? At the recentretailer gathering in the mountains, just as abunch of eager players were lining up to busta few balloons at one of the booths, anannouncement was made that a couple ofMotley Crue members were at the WEAbooth. The scramble left the balloon boothlooking very lonely. WEA had helicopteredthe bandmembers in for the day. (EC: That'snot funny . . . 9
Looking for a job . . . ? A well-knownconsultant, who appeared at a record meetrecently, suggested that radio owners werevery greedy and not too interested in what'sreally going down as far as music isconcerned. WOW . . . hold on! That's hot, hot, front burner news. Maybe he's lookingto get out of the consulting business.(EC: Let's hear more . . . 9
Easy does it with vinyl ... ! There are a lotof conflicting reports on the status of thevinyl single. I hope the industry isn't rushingthe demise of the 7" and 12" singles. Thereare still a lot of turntables around, andbesides, is there any cheaper way to promotean album? It's inevitable vinyl is on its wayout, but isn't there still a profit factor, evenin its dying days? (EC: When the industrysays OUT, out it goes . . . !)
Just a suggestion . . . ! A veryknowledgeable observer of the recordindustry has suggested that a good way forrecord company people to get acquaintedwith the record business . . . quickly, wouldbe to work one of the busy retail outlets for acouple of months . . . sort of an exchangeprogram. (EC: Would they get the samesalary as the retail worker?) A similararrangement would be good for programmersas well . . . wouldn't you say? (EC: You'll getletters . . . 9

After four years of writing, reviewing andediting, Graeme Boyce has left RPM toactively promote his own label, Raw EnergyRecords, and the revitalized ska scene. Mostrecently, RPM's chart editor, Boyce hasalready garnered interest in his project fromsuch magazines as Zoot (UK), MonkeyBusiness (Australia), Empty Hours (UK),Skank Generation (Italy) and Scooter Scene(UK). As well, Boyce is helping to organize aCanadian chapter of SHARP (SkinheadsAgainst Racial Prejudice) to alleviate, whathe describes as "certain currentmisconceptions," publicized recently.
"There were many reasons whichinfluenced my decision to leave RPM,"Boyce explains. "I was definitely bored, andfar too cynical with the music we werereceiving each week. So I decided to dosomething about it. Hopefully, we can sparksome life into an industry that has grown old.
"Aside from those labels content withsigning bands that can write and record a hitsong immediately, it seems there has been alot of grasping at straws lately, and, in theprocess, the independent scene has beengrossly neglected. Today, there is a void inthe commercial market for lively recordings. The kids are not waiting with baited breathfor the new Phil Collins or Steve Winwoodalbum; they want excitement in their lives, and not something their parents like either. One day soon, the industry will have torealize that fact.

Boyce leaves RPM to launch Raw Energy label After four years of writing, reviewing and
editing, Graeme Boyce has left RPM to actively promote his own label, Raw Energy
Records, and the revitalized ska scene. Most recently, RPM's chart editor, Boyce has already garnered interest in his project from
such magazines as Zoot (UK), Monkey Business (Australia), Empty Hours (UK),
Skank Generation (Italy) and Scooter Scene (UK). As well, Boyce is helping to organize a
Canadian chapter of SHARP (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice) to alleviate, what
he describes as "certain current misconceptions," publicized recently.
"There were many reasons which influenced my decision to leave RPM,"
Boyce explains. "I was definitely bored, and far too cynical with the music we were
receiving each week. So I decided to do something about it. Hopefully, we can spark
some life into an industry that has grown old. "Aside from those labels content with
signing bands that can write and record a hit song immediately, it seems there has been a
lot of grasping at straws lately, and, in the process, the independent scene has been grossly neglected. Today, there is a void in
the commercial market for lively recordings. The kids are not waiting with baited breath for the new Phil Collins or Steve Winwood
album; they want excitement in their lives, and not something their parents like either. One day soon, the industry will have to
realize that fact.
Atlantic/Elektra post to WEA's Sharrard It's now official, Randy Sharrard has been
appointed to the position of Atlantic/Elektra Product Manager (RPM - May 13/89). The
announcement was made by Garry Newman, Vice President, Sales for WEA Music
Canada. Sharrard joined WEA in July of 1979
and since then, "proving his superior knowledge of product," says Newman, "is
well suited to fill his predecessor's (Kim Cooke) shoes."
"However, the key to success and the bottom line, as we all know, is the ability to
write well, to write powerful and emotional songs, but whether or not a song is a hit should be a secondary motive for signing an
act. Radio has taken precedence, with respect to new signings, because record companies
are unwilling to tread upon new ground and, perhaps, fail. There is an incredible amount
of talent thriving on the street today, just waiting to be discovered. I want to capture
the energy and excitement of the street, as raw as possible, and make it available as
quickly as I can." Upon graduation from Wilfrid Laurier University (Economics and History), and following a stint at the Elbow Beach Resort in Bermuda, Boyce joined the staff of RPM as National News writer in 1985 and was elevated to the position of Chart Editor last
year. Subsequently, he has interviewed artists from Anne Murray to Iron Maiden, as
well as managers and label executives from around the world. Now, Boyce will attempt
to put some of his theories, developed over the years, into practice.
Scazighino to I.R.S. National Publicity post
Christina Scazighino has been appointed National Publicity Manager for I.R.S. Records Canada. She will be responsible for
the promotion of the label's releases to press, television, video and dance pools as well as
college radio. Scazighino comes to I.R.S. from the
Eleanor Fulcher firm, where she was employed as a publicist. Prior to that she was
a publicist for Joanne Smale Productions. Her experience also includes a public
relations stint for the Ontario Pavilion at Expo '86 in Vancouver. Scazighino was
educated in Montreal and is fluently bilingual. The above announcement was made by
Paul Orescan, who heads up the Canadian operation of I.R.S.

paign will be the main thrust of a four-year, $20 million commitment to promote the
"responsible use of alcohol." When the campaign was announced at
simultaneous press receptions in Toronto and Montreal, there were several entertainment
and sports celebrities on hand to endorse the program. Among the guests were hockey
legends Jean Beliveau and Henri Richard; musicians Alan Frew (Glass Tiger), Tom Cochrane, Kim Mitchell and Gil Moore; Rex
Harrington and Kim Lightheart from the National Ballet of Canada; and Olympic gold medalist Carolyn Waldo. The program will include broadcast,
print and transit advertising, as well as consumer promotions and other public
awareness activities. Molson President John Carroll referred to the program's
endorsement by those who attended the launch and other celebrities as "evidence of a
growing national commitment to address the social challenge of responsible drinking."

CAPAC and PROCAN co-sponsor workshops
The reality of the amalgamation of Canada's two performing rights societies, the
Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada (CAPAC) and the Performing Rights Organization of Canada
Limited (PROCAN) has become even more evident with the announcement of' the
co -sponsoring of a series of Songwriter Workshops in the Maritimes. CAPAC and PROCAN, along with the Songwriters
Association of Canada will sponsor free Songwriter Workshops in Charlottetown,
Halifax and St. John's. The first date for this rather unique
opportunity to have song demos performed to an audience and evaluated by a panel of
music industry experts will be May 27th from I to 5 pm at Charlottetown's Inn on the Hill.
The next day the panel will re -convene at the Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax, same time.
The group moves to the Hotel Newfoundland in St. John's on Monday (29)
for a Business Seminar for Songwriters. Topics to be covered during this 7 to 10 pm session include copyright, income available to
sonwriters from their songs, music publishing, promotion and publicity, and
demos. For further information contact
PROCAN's Richard Albert in Halifax, 902-454-6475 or, in Toronto, Nancy
Gyokeres of PROCAN at 416-445-8700, or CAPAC's Larry Fitzpatrick, 416-924-4427.

Pair of Murray tickets go for record $1,000
A Toronto couple paid what must be a record price for a pair of tickets to see Anne Murray
at Toronto's O'Keefe. The two tickets cost them $1,000.
This wasn't the case of a scalper's scam however. The Murray fans were the highest
bidders at an auction which was held at a Toronto school as a part of its fund raising
activities. Tickets for Murray's five night O'Keefe engagement (May 17 through 21) ranged
from $35.50 to $20.50.

CKNX FM Wingham Joey Vendetta has been promoted to the post of Music Director for Toronto's Q107 -FM

Having worked closely with the station's Program Director, Andy Frost, Vendetta has become a valuable player in the music

position of Music Director. Says Frost, "I've been grooming Joey

bands that Handsome Ned had played in, and during the breaks, the club's sound system
gave a sampling of his Virgin LP, The Ballad Of Handsome Ned.
There has been much written about Handsome Ned, unfortunately, most of it
after his death. The Toronto country singer died of an apparent heroin overdose in 1987
at the age of 29. Fittingly, on this night to remember Handsome Ned, most of the
people in the club were knocking back Black Label, a beer he made famous in Canada.
54.40 play Russia; new LP completed
Vancouver's 54.40 recently had the opportunity to play before a Soviet audience
as part Interchance '89, a rock festival. They, along with fellow Vancouverites The
Scramblers, played two shows at the 10,000 seat Luzhnyki Stadium in Moscow. The
festival brought together some of the U.S.S.R.'s top up and coming groups along
with performers from Canada, the U.K. and West Germany.
The overseas trip came at an opportune time for 54.40 as they have just completed
putting the finishing touches on their 3rd Warner Bros/Reprise LP Fight For Love.
Recorded entirely in Vancouver and produced by band member Neil Osborne and
Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, 54.40), the LP is set for a late summer release.
Dan Elliot, formerly middays at Wingham's CKNX FM 102, a pop adult station, has been named Music Director. He will also continue
his afternoon on -air shift. Elliot replaces Lisa Brandt, who became Program Director of the station in January of
this year.

CPI's Arthur Fogel expressed his belief that indoor concerts can be a very attractive
alternative to uncomfortable Toronto summers, as long as suitable acts are chosen
for such an environment. The following have been confirmed as
CPI/Molson Rocks presentations at Roy Thompson Hall: Shirley Bassey (June 25),
George Strait (July 2), Jody Watley (18), The Everly Brothers (17), The Smothers Brothers

COVER STORY - by Chris Murray
Stan Ridgway sees videos in Orwellian lightSoon to embark on a European tour, StanRidgway will return to North America forlater dates in June to support his latest soloeffort, Mosquitos, his first for the Geffenlabel. Ridgway explains his departure fromIRS through a telling analogue: "It's like whyone suddenly wants to switch apartmentsbecause . . perhaps the landlord is tellingyou to turn your music down."
Ridgway prefers to leave business endconcerns to the record company and likensthe relationship of music and business to thatof water and gasoline. "Sometimes it getskind of irritating," he quips, "It makes meneurotic."
Like many artists active concurrent withthe birth of the video era, Ridgway perceivesvideo as a potential outlet for expression nowstripped of artistic import by the industry andreduced to a mere sales tool. Whileacknowledging that "they can be in placeswhere you can't be and they can let peopleknow about something that maybe theywouldn't have known about otherwise," thebottom line for Ridgway is, "They'recommercials and I don't think you can reallyget away from that."
The FOX gets The Whofor a second showThe biggest news to hit Vancouver last month(April 29) was the firming of The Who for anAugust 18th B.C. Place Stadium date.. Thebig news for May, thanks to 99.3 The FOX,was the announcement of a second show
It took less than five -and -a -half hours, after The Who tickets went on sale (April 29)for the box office to post "Sold Out" signsfor the 47,000 seat stadium. This promptedThe FOX programming staff to go intoaction and Monday morning (May 1st.)morning show hosts Larry & Willy got on thecase, promoting a second concert. Listenerswere asked to call a telephone number whichautomatically tabulated the number of callsreceived. In less than 48 hours, that numberexceeded 22,000 and Perryscope Concertsmanager Mark Norman announced on TheFOX, that they would go ahead with thesecond show of the band's 25th AnniversaryTour.
Where he once may have seen promisefor videos, he now places them in a 1984 -stylescenario: "In the beginning videos were new, were fresh. When it first began you had thekind of subversive avenue that was MTV thatdidn't really have any rules yet. There's a lotof rules with it now. It's all segmented andthere's a lot of programming decisions, and itbecomes very Orwellian to me. It becomesalmost like Brave New World or somethinglike . . . 'This is for this demographic, andthis is going to be piped out here.'
"It's hynotizing," he continues. "Thewhole bombardment of images . . . the age ofimages, becomes overwhelming for mesometimes. It's like your brain's gettingsucked out of your head. The whole idea ofan MTV world is frightening to me . . . a lotof people watching, growing up with MTVV.Is and looking at that and saying, 'Yeahmommy, I wanna be a video slut'.
"I sometimes think that any newmovement will be born out of non -televisionwatchers," Ridgway flippantly suggests."There'll be almost a religious movementthat says, 'Don't watch TV anymore'."
Despite his personal dislike of videos,Ridgway nonetheless makes them and hasrecently shot clips for Goin' Southbound andCalling Out To Carol. "For my particularmusic," he remarks, "to describe it is onething, to see it is another. To then showpeople what it looks like seems kind ofobscene. You're stealing imagination frompeople. So I try to make things that leave a lotof openness to it.

- IRS -82001-J
A widely varied project, from AOR picks Gold Is A Bullet and It's Only
Money to CHR accessible Happy Birthday to folky introspective Little
Conversations, this album has something to please everybody.
Sounding better with each listen, it may unfortunately get passed over initially at music meetings, but has
enough substance that, if there is any justice, it will eventually get the proper
recognition. - CM
PILGRIM SOULS -Rock Is This All Of Us?
Columbia -
FC-44414-H Not exactly an accessible record, but an interesting debut just the same. Pro-
duced by Alvin Clark (X, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Gene Loves Jezebel),
this album sounds like it was recorded in one session in someone's basement.
Lots of guitar with an alternative edge on certain tracks may appeal to
campus radio, but AOR programmers may shy away from this one. Danny
Yetnikoff comes across as a fair lead guitarist and songwriter (he wrote all
the tracks), but he should leave the singing to someone else. Hardly an
earth shattering first effort, but there is definite possibility for success down
the road. -
DS
GRAYSON HUGH NC Blind To Reason RCA 7661 -1 -R -N
A very solid, self-contained debut for BMG artist, Hugh. Almost entirely self
- composed, this talented songwriter integrates his unique but soothing
vocals well, into what is essentially, highly contemporary material.
However, as the demand at NC calls for such a standard fare, success can be very chancy.
- RG
CHINA CRISIS Diary Of A Hollow Horse Virgin VL-2567-W
This release is proof enough that the choice of producer will certainly in-
fluence how an album will sound.
- Pop
Walter Becker, guitarist/songwriter from Steely Dan, produced six of the
ten tracks, and although the songs were written by the bandmembers
themselves, the sound of the finished Product certainly bears resemblance to
atter day Steely Dan. Listening to Sweet Charity in Adoration or Singing
The Praises Of Finer Things might bring the listener back to the days of
Aja or Gaucho. However, the lead single, St. Saviour Square, is one of the
strongest cuts on the LP, and it is not one of the Becker produced tunes. But
Becker certainly does lend something to the LP, and it makes for very smooth
listening from beginning to end. DS

WANG CHUNG -Pop The Warmer Side Of Cool
Geffen - XGHS-24222-P Jack Hues and Nick Feldman, the duo who make up Wang Chung, have
released another collection full of great hooks and ear-cathing melodies that is sure to repeat the success of
their previous LP, Mosaic. Praying To A New God, the first single, really cooks and it has chart -topper written all over
it. Swing, a jazz -influenced toe -tapper, would be a great choice for a follow-up.
Predicting that CHR and AOR radio will jump all over this one is certainly not
out of line, and by the sound of it, Wang Chung have produced an album that's going to make sure everybody
will have fun again this summer. -

ROAD HOUSE Rock Original Soundtrack
Arista AL -8576N Soundtracks are generally a hit or miss proposition, either falling flat and
disappearing quickly, or they become a smash and spawn several hits. Jeff Healey has a role in the latest Patrick
Swayze film, and he is the main star on the soundtrack. Although he only
contributes four cuts (all covers), this album should do well on the merits of
Healey's performances alone. Also included are two songs performed by Swayze (Raising Heaven, Cliff's Edge),
and if his success with She's Like The Wind from the Dirty Dancing
soundtrack is any indication, he may find himself with another hit on his
hands. DS
SAY ANYTHING Pop/Rock Various Artists/Soundtrack
Epic - SP -45150-H
As soundtracks go, this one has what it takes: pop, rock, pop/rock, slightly
alternative, ska, and proven hits. While all tracks are key, the killer live version of Living Colour's Cult Of Personality
will sell a lot of copies by itself. With the movie getting some good press, this package has the potential to
happen in a big way at retail -
CM
KINGDOM COME -Rock In Your Face
Polydor -
839-192-0 These guys can really cook on vinyl,
but when lead singer Lenny Wolf opens his mouth, all that comes to mind is a
young Robert Plant, and that label is something this group just can't shake.
There are some stand out tracks, (Who Do You Love, Just Like A Wild Rose), but it's doubtful that this release will
achieve the commercial success of its predecessor. DS

GREAT WHITE -Rock Twice Shy
Capitol C1 -90640-F Just another heavy metal album?
Pretty much. The standard themes are all there: women, women, women, and
this LP should appeal to those who prefer turning it up rather than
mellowing out. Unfortunately, the best cut on the album is a cover
- Ian
Hunter's Once Bitten Twice Shy, and it's only fair at best. The main problem
is that the original material is missing that something special to distinguish it from the rest of the heavy metal crop, and that may result in getting lost
in the crowd. DS
TOM PETTY -
Pop Full Moon Fever - MCA
- 6253-J
This album is what a lot of people were afraid it might be, sounding more like
the Traveling Wilburys than previous Tom Petty efforts. Nevertheless, every
song is thoroughly accessible and the record is suitably varied, moving from
folk rock to the acoustic ballad Alright For Now to slightly harder -edged
numbers. The first single, I Won't Back Down, has proven a winner at CHR and
any number of tracks could give a similar performance. The primary drawback is that Jeff Lynne's production makes each song ultra - smooth and perilously close to perfect,
with the rough edges we expect from Petty lost. CM
DR. JOHN In A Sentimental Mood
Warner Bros - 92-58891-P A fine return to form from one of New
Orleans' best. This LP shines from start to finish, both in terms of
musicianship and choice of material. The album leads off with a smoothas-
glass version of Makin' Whoopee (featuring co -lead vocals by Rickie Lee
Jones) and just cruises along from there. Dr. John's gentle touch on the piano and distinctive vocals combine
for a sound that may make one think of the New York City skyline on a summer
night. Other choice cuts are the title track, Black Night and More Than You
Know. - DS
