BSN Cohort Excels on NCLEX Exam
Despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19, the April 2020 graduating class of the Bachelor of Sciencein Nursing program achieved a 98.6% first-time pass rate on the National Council LicensureExamination (NCLEX).
Article Warns Pandemic CouldWiden Gender Gap in Higher Ed
Tiffany Hogan, director of the SAiL Lab, is co-author of A Call to Action:Supporting Women Faculty in the Time of COVID-19 and Beyond. The article,published in Medium, warns that remote working could exacerbate existinginequalities that favor men in academe, including receiving tenure, grants awarded,
and leadership positions.
Big Buddies Program Launched
The Office of Student and Alumni Services partnered with students to set up the Big Buddies program,consisting of live Zoom sessions for engaging activities for children of a variety of ages. Becca Langdon,DPT ’21, made slime with participants on July 15, Stefanie Johnston, OTD ’22, and Jodie Chickvara,OTD ’22, led a yoga, movement, and mindfulness session on July 17, and Madison Horner, DPT ’21,baked oatmeal cookies with participants on July 22.
Bellack Library Spelling Bee Held
Six students competed virtually in the first-ever Janis P. BellackLibrary Spelling Bee, held July 9. The contestants were Alyx Vogle,GC ’21; Megan Urbano, SLP ’21; Emmaline Brown, scienceprerequisite student; Emma Snyder, GC ’22; Meghan Berry, PT’22; and Hargun Khanna, PT ’22. who was crowned 2020 IHPChampion Speller after successfully spelling the winning word
“biopsychosocial.” Rachel Norton, SLP ’21, hosted, with Anna Do, OTD ’21, and Kim Ames, OTD ’21,judging. Watch a full video of the event.
Faculty News
Mary Beth Kadlec, an assistant professor of OT, has received an excellence inteaching award from the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry residents at UMassMedical School. She is the program director of the UMass Memorial Health Care’sCenter for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Clinic. The residents said shehelped them better understand how to evaluate the whole child by also consideringhow the child's sensory processing, physical capacity, and cognitive abilitiescontribute to their emotional and behavioral challenges.
Rania Karim, an assistant professor of PT, was selected to serve on APTA staffwork group to review and revise the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice. The guide,which was developed using expert consensus to identify common features ofpatient/client management for selected patient/client diagnostic groups, is used byphysical therapist and physical therapist assistant educators, students, andclinicians.
Teresa Kimberley, director of the Brain Recovery Lab and a professor of physicaltherapy, was asked to be a mentor for the NIH-sponsored Training in Grantsmanshipfor Rehabilitation Research; she is a former mentee in the program. She also wasasked to serve on the NIH K-award review panel for NIH NINDS.
Janice Palaganas, associate director of the Health Professions Educationprograms, is the lead author of a new textbook. Mastering Simulation, a Handbookfor Success focuses on using and embedding healthcare simulation to guidestudents and practitioners in developing clinical competencies while providing a solidfoundation for improving patient outcomes. It is Dr. Palaganas’s third textbook.
Prue Plummer, a professor of PT, was invited to participate in the NINDS/NICHDCommon Data Elements Working Group for the Rehabilitation CDE project as amember of the Motor Function Subgroup.
Elise Townsend, assistant professor of CSD, served as a panelist for the HarvardMedical School Biomedical Science Careers program webinar, “Getting intoHealth Professions School,” that targeted underrepresented high school and collegestudents interested in the health sciences.
Lauryn Zipse, co-director of the Cognitive research Group and an associateprofessor of CSD, is interviewed in the ASHA Leader on ways to support learningfor people with memory difficulties related to a traumatic brain injury.
