We distinguish between five main levels in the teaching process of handball.

H@S programme primarily develops across the first three levels, novice, beginner and intermediate,

and marginally touches the advanced level.

Colour code:

The primary factor is the level and the secondary factor is the age of the players.

EXPERT LEVEL (17y and over)

ADVANCED (14-17 years)

INTERMEDIATE (11-14 years)

BEGINNER (8-11 years)

NOVICE (5-8 years)

The four major game problems in handball are:

• Maintaining ball possession

• Making forward progression

• Attacking the goal & shooting

• Regaining the ball & protecting the goal

I need to focus on the ball.

Can I intercept the ball?

Should I moveaway or give

1st STAGE: MINI HANDBALL – UNSTRUCTURED DEFENCE

Main focus: attacking playNovices tend to gather

around the ball- anarchic game.

Encourage learners to adopt a spread-out and spacing game-play, which increases possibilities to retain possession and to make forward progression to attack the

goal.

• Focus on offence (numerical advantage)

• After loss of a ball, any player can assumeGK position or coach can decide

• The “protected ball rule“

• Not strict with technical mistakes

• GK puts the ball into play

• Unstructured defence – win the ball, avoidcontact

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

• As we move to applying this developmental model to your program, consider these questions:

• What is high-performance game play?

• What is the best way to develop my players for it?

• What skills should I be teaching?

• How do I assess their development?

• What obstacles stand in my way?

Page 24: IHF Training and Education Programme for PE Teachers and … · 2020. 5. 4. · 3rd stage TRANSITION TO HANDBALL POSITIONAL RESPON-SIBILITY + ZONE DEFENCE Solving game problems brought

24

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONHIGH-PERFORMANCE GAME PLAY

What is high-performance game play?• Fully developed technical skills in all

situations (scale & scope).• Complete tactical understanding in all

phases and mirco-phases.• Highly developed motor skills (balance,

speed, agility, endurance, coordination,strength, power).

• Highly developed mental skills (intelligence, problem solving, decision-making,creativity).

• Athletic profiles & intangibles.

Page 25: IHF Training and Education Programme for PE Teachers and … · 2020. 5. 4. · 3rd stage TRANSITION TO HANDBALL POSITIONAL RESPON-SIBILITY + ZONE DEFENCE Solving game problems brought

25

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONAPPLICATION FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE

• Practice tasks are the key to developing high-performance players:• BASIC GAME FORMS are directly linked to game problem development in players.

• PARTIAL GAME FORMS highlight key techno-tactical elements of basic game forms such as spacing, collaborating, passing & catching.

• SMALL-SIDED GAMES improve techno-tactical skills without structural game play elements.

• TACTICAL GAMES improve techno-tactical skills and problem solving in particular game contexts under game-like conditions.

• TACTICAL DRILLS develop tactical movement patterns (e.g., crossing).

• TECHNICAL DRILLS develop the techniques of tactical movement patterns into basic movement skills (e.g., side-step).

• RUDIMENT DRILLS further develop the bases of basic movement skills.

• CONDITIONING DRILLS develop the motor skills upon which all movements rely.

30

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATION1st AND 2nd STAGES ATTACKING GOAL

The four important questions to ask for every stage in the developmental process:• What do they need to

know?• What do they need to

do with the ball?• What do they need to

do without the ball?• How do I help them

get better?

31

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATION3rd STAGE ATTACKING THE GOAL

The concepts and skills required for each stage of development are provoked by the introduction of each new basic game form.

32

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATION4th STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT

Building a better foundation for high-performance requires:• Knowledge of the concepts

and skills required of skillfulplay.

• Tools to develop theseconcepts and skills inindividuals, small groups, andteams.

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONOBSTACLES TO DEVELOPMENT

• Time, money, and federation support.

• Lack of understanding of the target zones for motor and playing skillsdevelopment for boys and girls.

• Incomplete knowledge of the handball developmental process.

• Confuse Talent Selection with Long-Term Talent Development.

• Immediate focus on winning to maintain coaching position.

• Confidence to develop yourself as a coach.
