BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONCOACHING EDUCATION
6
We distinguish between five main levels in the teaching process of handball.
H@S programme primarily develops across the first three levels, novice, beginner and intermediate,
and marginally touches the advanced level.
Colour code:
The primary factor is the level and the secondary factor is the age of the players.
EXPERT LEVEL (17y and over)
ADVANCED (14-17 years)
INTERMEDIATE (11-14 years)
BEGINNER (8-11 years)
NOVICE (5-8 years)
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONDEVELOPMENTAL STEPS

• Learning by doing – instructionalmethodology• Ideal learning occurs through
experiences• Active participation of players• All learning styles, especially
kinesthetics
• Involvement of all children

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONGAME-BASED APPROACH
The four major game problems in handball are:
• Maintaining ball possession
• Making forward progression
• Attacking the goal & shooting
• Regaining the ball & protecting the goal

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONGAME PRINCIPLES
Game play situation where learners become aware of how to solve 3v2 situation
I need to focus on the ball.
Can I intercept the ball?
Should I moveaway or give
support?
Whatshould I do?
Am I wellpositioned?
Should Ipressure?

Explore and develop game play appreciation through simple game form
UNSTRUCTURED DEFENCE
NOVICE
Game form with uneven numbers, 4v3 + GK or 3v2 + GKSmall-sized court with soft ball.
- Solve numerical advantage in large and open space.- Understanding of basic game principles (tactics + techniques).- Improve motor and basic playing skills.- Understanding of basic game rules.- Respect Fair play
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONNOVICE STAGE
13
NOVICE – MINI HANDBALL1st stage: Game form with uneven number (4v3+GK or 3v2+GK)
1st STAGE: MINI HANDBALL – UNSTRUCTURED DEFENCE
Main focus: attacking playNovices tend to gather
around the ball- anarchic game.
Encourage learners to adopt a spread-out and spacing game-play, which increases possibilities to retain possession and to make forward progression to attack the
goal.
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONNOVICE STAGE
• Focus on offence (numerical advantage)
• After loss of a ball, any player can assumeGK position or coach can decide
• The “protected ball rule“
• Not strict with technical mistakes
• GK puts the ball into play
• Unstructured defence – win the ball, avoidcontact
14
Use a game play with numerical advantage (4v3+GK/3v2+GK)

POSITIONAL RESPON-SIBILITY + ZONE DEFENCE
Solving game problems brought on by zone pressure defence (2:2)
Game form 4+GK v 4+GK / 5+GK v 5+GKSmall or medium-sized court with tailored sized ball.
- Learning to create numerical advantage in small space (around goal area).- Develop game play competencies in fast transitions.- Improve motor and basic playing skills.- Extend game knowledge, principles, tactics and technical skills- Variety of roles, including refereeing and respect Fair Play.

3rd stage: Introduction to positional play, zone defence
Game form:- 5v5 game play, with a rudimentary form of zone defence
- A two-lined defence is recommended

Recommendations:Introduction of self-rotation rules for players to experience different court playing positions:
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONINTERMEDIATE STAGE
• Creating and exploiting numerical advantages against zone defence
• Breaking through defence – creating numerical advantage

Partial game forms: examples of the learning tasks to work on the above-mentioned concepts and skills:
Game play 2v2,with supportersin half or fullcourt size.
Game play 3v3,per sectors,in half or fullcourt size.

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
• As we move to applying this developmental model to your program, consider these questions:
• What is high-performance game play?
• What is the best way to develop my players for it?
• What skills should I be teaching?
• How do I assess their development?
• What obstacles stand in my way?
24
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONHIGH-PERFORMANCE GAME PLAY
What is high-performance game play?• Fully developed technical skills in all
situations (scale & scope).• Complete tactical understanding in all
phases and mirco-phases.• Highly developed motor skills (balance,
speed, agility, endurance, coordination,strength, power).
• Highly developed mental skills (intelligence, problem solving, decision-making,creativity).
• Athletic profiles & intangibles.
25
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONAPPLICATION FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE
• Practice tasks are the key to developing high-performance players:• BASIC GAME FORMS are directly linked to game problem development in players.
• PARTIAL GAME FORMS highlight key techno-tactical elements of basic game forms such as spacing, collaborating, passing & catching.
• SMALL-SIDED GAMES improve techno-tactical skills without structural game play elements.
• TACTICAL GAMES improve techno-tactical skills and problem solving in particular game contexts under game-like conditions.
• TACTICAL DRILLS develop tactical movement patterns (e.g., crossing).
• TECHNICAL DRILLS develop the techniques of tactical movement patterns into basic movement skills (e.g., side-step).
• RUDIMENT DRILLS further develop the bases of basic movement skills.
• CONDITIONING DRILLS develop the motor skills upon which all movements rely.

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONGAME PROBLEM DEVELOPMENT
Overview of game problem development through stages:
30
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATION1st AND 2nd STAGES ATTACKING GOAL
The four important questions to ask for every stage in the developmental process:• What do they need to
know?• What do they need to
do with the ball?• What do they need to
do without the ball?• How do I help them
get better?
31
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATION3rd STAGE ATTACKING THE GOAL
The concepts and skills required for each stage of development are provoked by the introduction of each new basic game form.
32
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATION4th STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
Building a better foundation for high-performance requires:• Knowledge of the concepts
and skills required of skillfulplay.
• Tools to develop theseconcepts and skills inindividuals, small groups, andteams.

BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONTESTING & ASSESSMENT
In the book, we have several subchapters on testing and assessment.
35
BUILDING A BETTER FOUNDATIONOBSTACLES TO DEVELOPMENT
• Time, money, and federation support.
• Lack of understanding of the target zones for motor and playing skillsdevelopment for boys and girls.
• Incomplete knowledge of the handball developmental process.
• Confuse Talent Selection with Long-Term Talent Development.
• Immediate focus on winning to maintain coaching position.
• Confidence to develop yourself as a coach.
